Drie Rondavels, Blude river Canion

Kruger NP in the morning - hot and dry; climbing west from Nelspruit (with a good view of along-crested eagle on the roadside) - cooling rapidly; Graskop in the early afternoon - cool and damp; to "God's View" and "Wonderview" - visibility nil, and cold! A remarkable change in climate in only a few hours.

We had chosen to explore the Blyde River Canyon and found it completely fogged in, however we chose to be optimistic and continued to the Drie Rondavels viewpoint, arriving only shortly before the gate was closed, where the cloud lifted and an amazing view was revealed.

Potholes in Blyde River

We then made our way to Pilgrim's Rest, where we had thought to camp, however decided that the cold downpour justified a stay in the historic Royal Hotel, which has a main building, with a restaurant adjacent, and also "annexes" which are separate houses nearby; all giving a good sense of the character of this old town.

The following day we headed west, making our way across the tortuous Robber's Pass and then to Dullstroom, which turned out to be a busy town, full of shops, cafés, and visitors. We lunched at The Art of Food which was friendly and provided a delicious meal, somewhat to our surprise. It seems that this is a convenient stop for travellers from Johannesburg to Kruger NP as well as the fly-fishing capital of South Africa.
