McBrides Kafue: at home in the bush / En el monte como en casa

Male Puku
Zambia, June 23 to 29

When we finally arrived, Kalala and Chris met us, with a mixture of happiness and caution in their voices they welcomed us and warned us of the presence of a big male elephant in the camp, after saying hello, we asked "So what we need to do? and Chris with his natural style said "Come and have a cup of tea". we walked after him and when we came across the first fresh elephant dung he said "Look it is very big... lovely", we clearly understood that our time there was to be very different and it was.

Kafue River
McBrides Camp is a very special place in Kafue National Park, each morning we were in front of the fire looking at the river covered with a soft white blanket of mist creating a magical atmosphere on the riverbank, as a prediction of the magical time that would be experienced every day.
When the sun rises the birds start exploring the river, some of them almost invisible on the sand, others flying and fishing for their first food of the day,
and others simply warming under the delicate sun light at that time; the hippos making their calls and for us it was to go and explore.

Kafue River

Insects Bat
This place, the home of Chris and Charlotte, is an invitation to respect the natural world, the way in which they create a relationship with the other living beings and demonstrate admiration for each element of nature is a lesson and at the same time a performance to be enjoyed. They are continuously present, and the call of a small bird is enough reason to interrupt any conversation and pay attention. There wasn’t a single moment with them in which we were not learning something new in a very relaxed manner.

Common Duiker at Night
We could walk in the bush, drive around the different areas and clusters of vegetation, explore the river on a boat, move around during the day and the night, and enjoy the organic places they have created for their clients. All of the buildings are made with local materials, very well integrated with  an intention of minimum impact on the natural environment; the animals move around the camp enjoying the grass and the diversity of trees; during the night it’s possible to hear their noises and sometimes spot them.

Hippos in front the main camp
Chris and Charlotte are experts on and lovers of lions; during our time there we learned a lot about their behaviour, habits, and dynamics; also we learned about hippo, crocodile, puku, many birds, small cats, grasses, trees, warthog, bushbabies, bushbuck, water springs, elephant shrew and more. Every moment we had to be present and that brought a lot of freedom and energy.

The social life was also stupendous, during the first three nights Joanne and Irwin, two amazing New Yorkers, were in the camp site; as at home we shared meals and activities, their presence was delightful and funny, so that we could laugh every minute together, and appreciated their special and almost unique capacity to get lost, including getting lost coming from and going to the campsite. Our time to chat and enjoy human presence was always accompanied by delicious food; the kitchen team did an amazing job cooking on an open fire - fresh bread and multicultural dishes were set on the table, and we have to say that the table was specially prepared at every meal with beautiful local crafts.

Varandah in the room
Lioness and cubs
Every day between midday and tea time was a formal time to rest: with the high temperatures and early rising for activities, our bodies claim to rest, shower, nap, and take time to read and explore the books available were a perfect combination.

The intense, tasteful, and relaxed experience in McBrides was completed with a beautiful encounter with a group of lionesses and cubs; seeing them in the morning enjoying the fresh air and preparing for hunting was exciting but also concerning - one of the lionesses had lost a back leg in a snare; the cost of poaching is immense on the wildlife - in this lioness in terms of its capacity to survive without the pride, but also for future generations who are now close to seeing the animals only in books, as extinct.

Big hugs

Barotseland: a grandiose land/ Una tierra grandiosa

Zambia, Jun 16-21

The Kazungula border crossing was somewhat chaotic, took almost 2-1/2 hours, including the ferry across the Zambezi, and it was helpful to have some assistance from a local "agent", John; although we sought to minimise the help, it was useful to navigate the maze of offices and procedures. It was frustrating that apparently Zambia, like Zimbabwe, is a signatory to COMESA but does not honour the COMESA 3rd party insurance certificate, so we had to pay for local insurance, as well as a visa, carbon tax, road tax, and council tax, and the ferry fee. The ferries (there are four) appear to be of the same vintage as the one Alan used over 40 years ago.

Once into Zambia we turned left out of Kazungula, which was astonishing to everyone with whom we spoke, to head for Sesheke (ATM, SIM card, fuel, and our first exposure to Friters) on a shocking road, then north along the west bank to Kabula Lodge for our first night in Zambia (this time). This was a very tranquil places, the people there prepared the fire and we have an easy dinner and more time to enjoy.

The following day we visited the Ngonye Falls, of which we had been completely unaware, and which are beautiful and extensive: the same volume as Victoria Falls (obviously) spread laterally across seven falls (actually 5 falls and 2 rapids, we were told). The falls can be visited from the west bank, as in our case, where a community project offers entrance and a guided walk, crossing the dry branch of the river, or from the east bank from an African Parks entrance, which proved impossible to find, and from which we were told it's possible to see only the main falls.

The road north is new, in excellent condition, and almost devoid of traffic from Sesheke to Mongu, the route is attractive with big trees and places in which is posible to see te river. Mongu is the provincial capital, and where it's possible to stock up on groceries and fuel. From Mongu we crossed the Zambezi floodplain, previously a slow track with many water crossings and a ferry across the main river to get to Kalabo, access point to the Liuwa Plans National Park. Now there is an excellent highway, built by the Chinese, with 26 bridges, including a big bridge across the Zambezi. This route is a social meeting point, that connect the small villages in a unique landscape.

At Kalabo is the park office, although there was no one there who could handle the permits, however Adrian, the friendly watchman, called the manager on his phone who agreed that we could cross the river and stay at the Kayala Camp that night, returning in the morning to arrange park access. We did so, on a somewhat rickety pontoon ferry (semi-self-service), and found our way to the campsite. Although not inside the park boundary the campsite felt very much in the wild; we were the only visitors, the stars were brilliant, and it felt very remote. In the morning we returned to the river and crossed on a mokoro to go to the park office where we arranged permits, then returned across the river and headed into the park proper.

We stayed in the Kwale Camp, which has large attractive sites, with bat in the ablutions,  among the trees, in the middle of the wide grassy plains of Liuwa. We enjoyed our three days in the park immensely:   the grassy plains, broken by belts of trees, with frequent blue lagoons, are an expansive setting in which although the wildlife is less prolific than in some other parks, it was rewarding to encounter a group of wildebeest or zebra, to see the rare wild grey crowned cranes and wattled cranes in large numbers, or simply to relax and gaze over the blue lagoons.

We were fortunate to meet a group working in the park who were tracking lion, and who gave us the opportunity to join them for a couple of hours, in which we saw a group of three lionesses and two cubs; a beautiful experience. We returned at the end of the afternoon and were fortunate that they were still lazing under the same tree.

For those seeking to get away from the crowds Liuwa proved exceptional; in three days out in the park we saw no other visitors at all, although we did see briefly two other visitors at our campsite one day. The park is unusual in that there are local residents living within the park, some of whom we met, fishing in the lagoons or walking to or from small villages, all friendly and happy to talk about their activities.

All in all, this park was a delight, very different from the well-known parks in Southern Africa, an opportunity to appreciate these wide open spaces and their remoteness.

We then headed back to Kalabo, enjoying the rustic ferry across the river again, and then heading back to Mongu to stock up for West Lunga. Our plan at this point was to head north to Lukulu, then further north-east to get to West Lunga. This plan changed... we left Mongu and were aiming for Lukulu, knowing that the route was uncertain both in terms of trajectory and in quality. At Limulunga we found the "preferred" road north to be deep sand, and when we tried the alternative route (described by locals at the junction as "the road to Lukulu") we encountered even deeper sand, with the road becoming a maze of donkey trails across the floodplain. We returned to the first option and decided to drive as far as Ikithe Lodge, some 12 Km, in order to calibrate the route, and to seek local advice there. At the lodge, we collated local knowledge ("not a good road"), posts on the South African 4x4community forum ("broken axle", "best to go via Kaoma" (a massive detour)), and insight from an Australian couple camping at the lodge, who had planned to travel the same route and decided not to go at this time, and we reached the conclusion that our best plan was to camp there for the night, enjoying the palatial ablutions and access to the pool and bar, and then return to Mongu in the morning, continuing to Kafue National Park, and leaving the option of West Lunga NP until later in our trip, when we could gain access via the main highway from the Copper Belt.

Abrazos,
Alan y Marce

Common images of Botswana / Imágenes comunes de Botswana

2017 Jun 17

We decided to write this post to describe some common images around the country which people would recognise in a visit to Botswana and which were in some sense amazing for us.

Donkeys: even though we have seen donkeys almost everywhere we have visited the number of donkeys on the roads around this country is immense; they are the most important transport in the rural environment and are very well appreciated by the people. The roads are also used by goats and cows.

Wildlife in the road: when at the roadside you see a sign with an elephant shape you understand that you are in a wildlife area, but when two giraffes are standing in the middle of the highway you realise that is not a myth; on all of the main roads in the north of Botswana we found wild animals crossing the highway, especially elephants, and this reinforced our practice to avoid driving at night.

Speed traps: the main task for the police in Botswana is to check motorists' speed in the 80 Km per hour zones, and fine people who exceed this limit. In general the limits are 60 in towns, 80 entering and leaving towns and at major intersections, and 120 on the open highways. It's very common to see a car stopped at the side of the road while the driver is fined. They also fine people at police checkpoints, if the driver doesn't stop precisely at the stop sign placed a few metres ahead of the waiting police officer.

Potholes: with the exception of the route between Gaborone and Francistown, all the roads in Botswana have the capacity to surprise with potholes and eroded edges, sometimes it's only one in the middle of the highway, sometimes there are more potholes than road, and it is funny to see all of the drivers trying to avoid one and falling into another.

The rural houses in Botswana have a mix of materials and techniques; almost everyone has a traditional building which coexists with others made of more durable materials, most of the time in a rectangular shape. It's frequent to find the toilet outside of the main structure and to have a number of different buildings in a family dwelling, as a result of the need to have individual houses for the children when they grow up.

Clothes: it was very evident at the start of our trip to see formality in the dress of the people of Botswana; it's very common to see men in a rural area wearing suits, with women dressed in black. The use of heavy jackets and sweaters was very common even when the temperature was 28 deg C in the middle of the day.

Wifi: the mobile phone network in Botswana is slow and expensive, usually you have only emergency data and limited connectivity even in the biggest towns; we bought 1/5 of the data we used in Namibia, and at the end of the trip we still had a positive balance.

Basket ware: the main craft expression in Botswana is baskets, they use palm leaves to create a truncated design with geometric patterns, and use natural products to create the different colours. The baskets are really beautiful and are almost the only craft expression available around the country. San people create beautiful crafts with ostrich eggs and leather; their products are available in Ghanzi, but during our visit there the place was closed and despite multiple contacts we were unsuccessful in buying anything which could be delivered during the time we were in the country; problems with their web site and difficulties of (in) flexibility with carriers made it impossible.

Art on the highway: on all of the roads in Botswana you can see collections of objects or parts of them, collected from the road, and organized in singular compositions; these collages of materials and forms are use to indicate an entrance from the road, sometimes they indicate a smaller road and sometimes the entrance to a specific place, they are everywhere and it's a little difficult to understand how someone could explain to another how to find the entrance, it could be something like: "10 Km from Palapye you are going to see a pole with a yellow plastic bucket, a broken plate, and a red piece of wood, with a wheel and some coloured fabric - that is the entrance" 😳. However we have to accept that they could be very useful because with the height of the grass on the roadside it's impossible to see most entrances.

Alan & Marce

Tuli Block, simply wonderful / Tuli Block, simplemente maravilloso

2017 Jun 11-15

We had decided to go to Tuli block very early in our planned base case; curiously it was postponed until the end of our time in Botswana, after trying unsuccessfully (again) to extend our permission to stay in Botswana, we decided to make the trip to Tuli a little faster than we like and added 1600 km to our route.

Our satisfaction in visiting this area is immense. The first step was to visit Selebi-Pikwe, the place in which Alan lived 44 years ago. It was a pleasure to wander around this big place and provided the opportunity to listen to Alan's stories of his life there. We were able to visit the mine, in process of liquidation, and not only recognised the difference from the one that Alan had left, but also learned a lot about nickel & copper production; we had a very worthwhile conversation with one of the senior members of the organization, who led us to understand more about the challenges they have in closing down the main nickel and copper mine in the country.

In Tuli block our base was Molema Bush Camp, a beautiful place on the Limpopo river bank, this camp is associated with a community project, and has very good accommodation in cabins and campsites, and a great team of authentic people who really helped us get to know not only the area, but also the people and their traditions.

The topography in this area is characterised by gentle mountains and high plains crossed by rivers which at this time of the year are sandy beds with some lakes of water. The Mopane tree is everywhere sharing the space with the traditional acacias and the Baobabs. The area is tranquil, there are not jams of safari cars everywhere, so it is possible to move around and simply enjoy the landscape. The area is recognised for having crazy elephants - a little more aggressive - so we received a lot of warnings about them, however this time they were tranquil.

The animal world gave us beautiful images. We saw a Cheetah with her babies, after catching an impala. All of the area was really quiet,  the animals were hiding, and KB said "this is a place with a lot of animals, if they are hidden it's because a lion or cheetah is hunting", five minutes later we saw the female cheetah, she was resting under the shadow of a bush, sand when she had recovered she walked to the other side of some trees to call her babies, and after a few seconds two small furry cheetahs arrived, the three walked together to the carcass, the adult cheetah positioned the prey and started to open it, at the same time the babies bit at the skin unsuccessfully.  Once the mother had opened the body, she moved to the side to let her babies eat. In addition we had the opportunity to see hyena, Verreaux eagles, bush pigs, honey badger, and white-tailed mongoose.

This time it was possible to walk in the park, we walked to the summit of the principal mountain to see the landscape from the top, we learned how to react in case of encountering a Cheetah, Lion, a Leopard, or Elephant, lessons which didn't require any practical exercise, even though we saw foot prints of leopard and hyena during the walk. From the top we had the luck to see a group of elephants crossing the river bed looking for water, which was beautiful and also cut short our visit to the mountain - we had to leave the area before they smelled us, or be there until the elephants had gone.

At night we enjoyed our dinner with the team members, Lilian prepared mopane worm stew with pap (a corn dough); the stew was absolutely delicious, the worms were soft and consistent and the flavour was great. We ate by the fire and shared all the food and drinks available while we were talking about the traditions and daily life there and in Colombia. We received an invitation from them to live in their village for 3 months to learn Setswana and the practices of the rural life.

Our departure was a slow and pleasant process, during the morning we met each of the team members and had the opportunity to talk more about their personal interests and projects; warm and sincere hugs with every one, filling our heart with new love and a lot of admiration for them.

The Okavango Delta and Chobe River: a tale in three parts / Delta del Okavango y Rio Chobe: una historia en tres capítulos EN/ES

2017 May 30-Jun 11

We had spent some time in the "Okavango Panhandle" when we had entered Botswana from Namibia. Now we were returning to the north-west of the country to explore the Okavango Delta and move north-east to Kasane. The area includes the Moremi National Park in the west and the Chobe National Park in the east, and our time can be viewed in three parts: the Delta of the Okavango and Moremi NP; Savuti channel and marsh (including the Mababe Depression (a low-lying area adjacent to the "great sand ridge", not a negative state of mind) in the easternmost area of Moremi, as well as the track north-west to Kachikau; and the riverine system in Chobe NP, including the Chobe Riverbank.

The Delta of the Okavango / El Delta del Okavango.

We arrived in Maun, to take on supplies, including two more reserve fuel cans, and prepare for the next nine days during which we would be camping and with no access to fuel and very little else. We enjoyed an excellent lunch at French Connection, and good South Asian food at Chutney in the evening. The road from Maun to Moremi is badly corrugated however once into the park at South Gate the sandy road improved in terms of ride. It had been reported that the route was closed at at least one point, however we learned that detours had been established around the flooded places, and that we would be able to get to Third Bridge Camp with no problems. We spent 3 nights at Third Bridge, seeing wild dogs and elephants in the camp itself, as well as a lot of game in the surrounding area. This area is in the main Delta: verdant with many waterholes. There had been excellent rains and so although the area was drying out there was still a lot of of surface water.

From Third Bridge we went to Khwai Campsite. The alternatives were the "wet road", described as impassable, and the "dry road". We took the dry road however subsequent wanderings revealed that the wet road was in fact dry except for one small spot... the area is very attractive with large trees in the Xanakanaka area, and a flood plain closer to Khwai, where we chanced upon a pair of lions which we enjoyed watching for a couple of hours, returning later in the day to see them still there. We enjoyed the Hippo Pools several times, also seeing a beautiful pair of leopard one afternoon on our way there. Elephant were visible frequently, and in fact routinely walked through our campsite on their to or from the river. One afternoon we explored the area to the east, finding a beautiful spot on the banks of the river from which we could see a hippo mother and baby, and elephants enjoying the lush grass and water. From Khwai we headed north-east to leave Moremi and enter Chobe National Park.

 Savuti:

We entered Chobe NP through the Mababe gate; wide plains are characteristic in this part of the park, the tracks are sandy and in most of them the sand is soft, making the trip more challenging. Further north, close to Savuti camp, the plains are interrupted by rocky outcrops which are refreshing to the view.

Savuti was a great place to enjoy groups of elephant, giraffe, and lion. We saw two groups of lions, the first one was soon after entering the park, at a waterhole, they were one female and two males waiting for an opportunity for lunch and resting in the meantime; the others were four males eating a buffalo, they were taking turns to eat during the three days we were there, with the passing of time the easy food was over, and the effort needed for everyone to get access to the next piece of meat was huge. At the same time, the jackals started to explore the situation to understand the moment of their turn and the vultures were waiting patiently in nearby trees.

We left Savuti Camp and headed north-east on a long straight track, narrow and sandy; after passing the park gate the sand became deeper and softer, and the track climbs steadily, making the journey a long, slow slog. Finally we reached the village of Kachikau, whence a (welcome) tarred road leads on to the Ngoma Bridge and Kasane.

Chobe River:

Arriving at Ngoma Bridge one can drive on to Kasane on a good tarred road, or re-enter the National Park and make one's way along the Chobe riverfront, which is rich in wildlife, including large groups of elephant coming down to the river to drink. At the eastern end of the riverfront there is a one way system of tracks, to ease traffic flow, which is somewhat inconvenient in the afternoon, since the routes from which one can see the riverine area head directly into tHe setting sun, however further west access is open. We returned to the eastern area the following morning to explore the riverfront here. The Chobe riverfront is very attractive and one can see hippopotamus, giraffe, lechwe, and above all, elephant in large numbers.

We stayed in Kasane for two nights and having failed (yet again) to obtain visa extensions (another story) headed southeast to be able to visit Tuli in the remaining time available in Botswana.
