Central Kalahari Game Reserve: un lugar intenso / : an intense place

2017 May 27 to 30

Two narrow white tracks in the dry worn out grass indicated the route to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR); we started along this trajectory and soon the tracks disappeared to be replaced by a sand road with deep ruts and sudden dips surrounded by the bush. Everything around us showed its fortitude, needed to resist the adversity of the elements: the branches of the bush are robust and their screeching against the car implacable, the constant wind bends everything to its will, the sun shines intensely and dries everything in its passage, the bark of the trees is hard and twisted, creating attractive shadows.

After an hour we arrived at the entrance to the reserve; a quick registration process and recommendation to review the recent sightings. Curious; the red spots showed Leopard at the Deception campsites. We continued on our way; sand, wind, the tough bush, and space in all its extent. We arrived at the campsite in the last rays of sunlight. The site was immense, delimited by two wooden structures at the end: one for a shower, if you had water and a portable shower; the other a "long drop" latrine; the surrounding bush interrupted by the trails of animals. No fences and no-one else around - in contrast to the campsites we had visited so far, these were far from each other, one could not even sense the presence of another human being. We felt at this point how inhospitable the place was; no water, nowhere to obtain anything, and no one else around - our whole being alert; we lived on alert for the next few days.

Clear days and cold nights. Given the limitations of our fuel we chose to concentrate our time in two areas: Deception Valley and the heights of Sunday Pan and Leopard Pan. in Deception Valley the clouds passed overhead as if we were watching a film in fast motion. On the wide plains the high grass in flower bent in the wind and provided the backdrop for the animals, groups of springbok and oryx breaking the calm of the vista and creating a beautiful horizon. The extent of this reserve is so great that the animals seem absent, so that when you do see them it's a joy. Soon we saw the uplifted heads of Kori Bustards, always attractive and even more in groups. It was surprising to see an abundance of Secretary Birds, always on the move and taking to the air to maintain a prudent distance from humans. Groups of trees break the grassy plains providing places not only to seek felines but also as shady vantage points from which to wait and contemplate,

Birds in flight contrasted with the blue sky and their posture when perched on branches continually held our attention, opening opportunities to see other birds, enriching the experience.

We moved further north, the track climbing, enclosed by the bush and with softer sand, and leading us to the higher recently flooded Sunday and Leopard pans, beautiful expanses which gave us our first opportunity to see leopard and cheetah, both of extraordinary and distinctive beauty. The leopard precise and agile, capable of blending into the background and disappearing. The cheetahs delicate, alert, and with a touch of playfulness, seeking opportunities to hunt their prey.

The conditions of the environment stimulated a change in our routine; every day we set out at first light, then in a convenient campsite we prepared our breakfast, and then we chose another vantage point; around 1300h we returned to our campsite to prepare a robust lunch and something light for dinner later. At 1600h to another observation point and at sunset we reviewed the day's photos in the car and then took care of our nightly routines before retiring to our cave (the car) for the night.

The days passed in a combination of silence, surprise, admiration, and trepidation; on leaving the reserve this beauty crossed our path while we were having lunch, expressing exactly these attributes.

The Makgadikgadi Pans and a visit to the meerkats / Los salares de Makgadikgadi y una visita a los suricatos

2017 May 24-27

We left Gaborone and started north on an excellent dual carriageway; a major improvement over the last time Alan had travelled this route, when it was a gravel road. We were seeking to get to Francistown however the late start occasioned by the delay at Toyota meant that this was really too far, requiring at least a couple of hours in darkness, so we stayed at Palapye. We noted a significant change in our conversations with the people we met in Mahalapye and Palapye compared with Gaborone; there was more openness, confidence, and opportunity to connect than we had found in the capital.

The following morning we headed north to Francistown, where we stopped for coffee at Thorntree, then west on the main road to Maun. Our plans were to spend a night in Gweta Lodge and then a night at Nata. A quick cartographic check will reveal that this is in the wrong order, on the face of it, which had been a result of availability in accommodation in these destinations on the dates involved. Shortly after leaving Francistown, at the Y-junction where the road to Orapa leaves the main road west, we encountered a sign saying that the road to Maun was closed at Zoroga, and indicating a detour via Orapa: this was no minor detour; it meant that we would travel around 600 Km to Gweta, then 800 Km back to Nata, then 600 Km to Rakops (our next destination), compared with a "no detour" case of around 300 Km plus 100 Km plus 400 Km, so an extra 1200 Km, with uncertainty over the availability of fuel in Gweta (and, as it turned out, non-availability of fuel in the allegedly "reliable" station in Rakops).

The flooing area in Zoroga
We thought that there might be a way to get to Gweta via minor roads to the north of the main road and called the lodge to check; we were told that there was a detour around the flooded road, adding only a few Km and so continued on the main road. We stopped for a picnic lunch inside the Nata Reserve, adjacent to the Makgadikgadi Pan and then continued to Gweta Lodge, which turned out to be an attractive place to stay, at a very reasonable price.

The following (cold) morning we made a trip into the Makgadikgadi Pans, seeing meerkats close to the edge of the pans. These animals, a favourite with Animal Planet and National Geographic, had proved more difficult to see than we had expected, however our guide Petrus led us to an area where he was confident they would be, and he was successful. It was a pleasure to see these animals in the wild for the first time. The pans proved disappointing; the surface was still uncertain in terms of stability so we merely skirted the edge, the pans appearing more of a mud flat than the sparkling white expanse which might be expected.

At this point we changed our plans: it seemed that the recent excellent rains would reduce our chances of seeing much bird life at Nata, and so heading back there didn't add enough value compared with staying another night at Gweta, so we spent the afternoon visiting Nxai Pan. First we went to Baines' Baobabs, then to the waterhole near the main camp, seeing elephants and giraffes enjoying the water. The access road is badly corrugated, and this was an excellent entrée to the roads we would encounter at the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), our next destination. On heading back to Gweta we saw elephant at the side of the main highway, lending weight to the principle of avoiding night travel. On leaving Gweta in the morning we saw elephant again on the main highway west, probably the same ones.

The availability of fuel is limited in this area: we had filled up at Nata, and according to local advice and guidebooks could not expect any fuel from here to Rakops so took advantage of local knowledge to acquire additional fuel at an informal source. This proved to be a good decision since confidence in fuel availability at Rakops proved unjustified and we had to continue to Mopipi for fuel before entering CKGR, adding a further 110 Km to the trip.

When we arrived to the gas station we were driving with diesel fumes

Gaborone ("sin leche gracias") / Gaborone ("no milk thank you")

201 May 21 to 23

Our expectations were that we would find a smallish capital city, with an opportunity to gain insight into the history and culture of Botswana, eat at some good restaurants, and request visa extensions (since the Botswana Consulate in Washington had apparently misread our clear visa request and given only a 30 day visa, necessitating changes in our itinerary and (successful) requests to defer bookings so that we would not lose deposits if we could obtain extensions: easily done in Gaborone, according to the Consulate staff in Washington), also to get the vehicle serviced, with some key repairs also to be done (following Toyota's supply chain failure in South Africa and Namibia we had arranged for a new AC fan motor to be delivered to our hotel in Gaborone), and to make some purchases for the next part of our trip. It has to be said that Gaborone was underwhelming in all of these, although Botswana Post turned out to be a positive experience.

We had booked a hotel called "African Experience"... ; on arrival there was no trace of our booking, which was fortunate since the hotel failed to meet reasonable expectations. We moved to the Cresta Lodge, chosen principally for its proximity to the Toyota dealer, which was a good decision. In addition we had arranged for the new air conditioning fan motor to be delivered to the first hotel, and were told by the staff that this had not arrived, which was a significant blow (so to speak).

In the event, the bad news was that we spent most of our time in Gaborone either at the Toyota workshop or chasing the missing motor, giving us more or less no time to enjoy the cultural and culinary opportunities of the city. The good news was that we found that the latter were almost non-existent(!).

The National Museum and Art Gallery turned out to be "permanently closed", the Kalahari Quilts place noted as a highlight had shut down, and there were essentially no other attractions. BotswanaCraft did have a limited selection of crafts, however a lot less than hoped for.

We were attracted by the Mma Ramotswe Tea Corner, in the Cresta President Hotel, overlooking the Mall. There was no evidence of any effort to link the place to Mma Ramotswe other than the name, and the availability of rooibos tea, however one incident provides some insight into Gaborone, we feel. Upon being asked whether we would like hot or cold milk with our tea we answered "no milk, thank you". When the tea arrived, in addition to the cup, saucer, and teapot, there was a milk jug, with no milk in it...

We did find an excellent restaurant: Saffron, serving "indo fusion" and dined there twice. The service was good to erratic however the food was very good.

Regarding the AC motor, after a fair amount of detective work, some email traffic and a phone call to Dubai, we went to the central post office who efficiently checked their system and told us that the missing parcel was at Mogoditshane post office, which was the one closest to the original delivery address at "African Experience". Once there they checked their system and gave us the package (Hooray! We would now be able to fix the AC, which been ineffective for two months). Our expected one day at Toyota turned out to be most of three days, dragged out even when the vehicle was finally ready by failure of the computer system so that we had to wait an additional 3/4 of an hour for a manual invoice to be prepared. We then went to Dunlop at G west industrial zone to replace two tyres which were not going to last for the remainder of our trip. They did an excellent job.

As far as extending our visas was concerned, the Immigration Officer told us that she could not do this "since you still have lots of time on your visas", telling us that it was possible only when there remained only two or three days before expiry. We pointed out that if we did this, the chances of obtaining bookings for lodges or campsites were slim, however she was adamant, when not telling us how important tourism is to Botswana(!).

So, an unimpressive capital, in contrast to Windhoek; leaving nothing much positive to be remembered.

Abrazos,
Alan y Marce

De las tierras humedad a las secas / from wetlands to dry ones ES/EN

May 18 - 20 Botswana

Writing is one of the things that help us to manage the time when we have to do things with the car, but it seems that Botswana is a good place to train one's patience and we learned that things happen in their own time and that's it.

We arrived in Botswana from the north-west through Mohembo border crossing, this post is at the border of a natural park in Namibia, so to leave the country it's necessary to cross the park; we decided to take a drive in the park before leaving, to take advantage of the place. This was a worthwhile visit, we were able to watch from very close by, a group of eight adult elephants at a pan, not only drinking water, but also refreshing their bodies, which let us appreciate the process used: after drinking the elephant goes to a different place in the waterhole area, looking for soft sand close to the water; with its legs in the water, it starts to create a light mud, mixing the water with the soft sand, using its front legs carefully, which was impressive; those big feet moving slowly with precision in a very limited area is something beautiful.

When the mud is ready, the elephant uses its trunk to spray it over its body, over its back, sides, head, underneath, front, ears, and trunk. Applying mud with the trunk was another demonstration of control, the elephant applied the mud slowly, from the upper part to the bottom to cover the skin, making amazing gyrations with its trunk to cover the complete area. When it had finished with the mud, it started with sand, the finest sand is taken with the trunk again, and sprayed around the body in the same way as with the mud. When it had finish it started to drink water again, and another elephant took its place to start the same process.

After exploring the river bank and seeing more antelope, we arrived at the border crossing and received very effective attention; in 30 min we were in Botswana. Our first exploration was around Shakawe, the first village from the border, with facilities for day to day life, which provided us with a good impression of the infraestructure in this country, the next day with more data we adjusted our expectations a lot.

Drotsky's campsite was a fantastic place to sleep, the areas for camping are immense and covered by a natural protection from the trees around, the sites are on the river bank; it was possible for us to enjoy the view over the river, listen to the hippos there, see the birds in the mornings and from a boat during the late afternoon, and enjoy the silence of the place at night.

Going south, after a test of driving avoiding the potholes, we visited Tsodilo Hills and the extensive rock art there, it was a worthwhile walk around the Female hill, not only for the possibility of seeing the drawings made by San people 5000 years ago, but also for the explanations of the plants and their uses, and the animals' footprints, made by our guide.

It was a long trip to arrive at Ghanzi Trailblazers, the place we would sleep that night. Ghanzi is the capital of Kalahari province, in the main area for the San People. After discovering that we were booked into a hut, the traditional San house, built with mud, wood, and grass, we went on a Bushman walk. It was an exceptional experience, we walked with an 8 member San community, they started exploring the area, when they found something they explained to us the practical or social value of the element: plants, seeds, roots, insects, used in daily life; it was a display of knowledge and intelligence, in addition with excellent humour and performance even though they were speaking in their own language, and used a translator for us, the way in which they explained every element and connected with us allowed us to understand most of the information. An observation: every element they found in our walk, was retained; they saved and took it with them, this showed us the importance of every thing in this land and in San life.

At night the traditional food, beef stew with pap, and the San music and dancing, made the experience unforgettable. The chants are made by the women who sit down around the fire and use their voices and clap to create the music, it was beautiful and complex. The men were the  dancers, most of the time they were representing animals in order to honour the gods or daily life; the dancing is strong, with a lot of jumping movements, the rattling of seed cases on their legs made the perfect complement for the women's voices.

At 10 pm the generator was turned off, all the bush around starting the nightly party and we in the hut resting in small beds and using all our energy to get warm enough to sleep.

Abrazos

Etosha, grandeza en todas las dimensiones / Etosha, Grandeur in every dimension EN/ES

Namibia, 2017, May 11 to 16th

The word Etosha means a great white place, and that is a very appropriate description of this park, Etosha National Park has an extension of 22,912 Km2 and the lands are at an altitude between 1000m and 1330m above sea level; at this time of the year the days are sunny and warm and the nights are fresh or cold.

We arrived at Etosha from the north, through the western Galton Gate, the first part of the route was more of the riverside with ups and downs and communities more established with some crops of corn. The second part was a long way to the south from Ruacana, as far as the entrance to the park; this was dry and more dedicated to livestock grazing, with a lot of cows and goats on the route; the third part was inside the park driving to our campsite for that night, it was calm and enjoyable even though the roads inside the park were very corrugated, but the openness, the silence, the mix of plants, the light, and the presence of wild animals provoked calm and pleasure.

We were in the park for 5 nights and we drove around during the days, having ample time to see the groups of animals calmly. Etosha is full of zebras, and it's possible to see them around without any problem. It was exciting to see two types of zebra together and compare their anatomical characteristics. The baby zebras are expert in camouflage, their learn very quickly to avoid the cars and hide behind their mum's body; the most curious, who stop to watch the tourists, are kindly pushed by the adults to continue their way.

Watching elephants is always a pleasure, we could see the great solitaries, who walk with determination, their size fitting well with the environment, and they certainly look at home; on the other hand we had the opportunity to see a large group with individuals of various ages and sizes; the smaller ones captured our attention, partly because they are endearing, but also because their behaviour is often testing limits: they are exploring, playing with their trunks and discovering the plants. The youngest are looking for opportunities to show their strength and abilities, but they are very obedient when adults demand other behaviour, especially to access water.

Lions were also present, it was really interesting to see adults after the hunt and copulating. After seeing the dynamics, we were finally able to integrate the information we had re the times a lion repeats copulation in a day: it must be exhausting. The female lion gets up and circles the male, stands in front of him, he reacts immediately, mounts, copulates, the female spins onto her back to rest, the lion lies down: total time 15 sec; after a few minutes this dynamic is repeated, again and again.

Giraffes are also frequent in this park, they appear in the landscape, and in the twinkling of an eye you have nine around you which move slowly in different directions. When they were at the waterhole, we were able to see all the formations and precautions they take before starting to drink, we imagine that their vulnerability increases when they drink, especially because of the position they need to take for this. This time the main male advanced and challenged the wildebeest nearby leaving the waterhole free, then two other giraffes stood at the ends of the group, the main male drank and when finished, left the central area free for others to drink, during this period there were always giraffes in defensive positions. When the rhinoceros arrived, we did not notice changes in behaviour, but when the spotted hyena approached, the giraffes in the central area began to kick back, warning caution.

Watching rhinos in Etosha was a gift, we were able to see them four of the five days; during the day we saw lonely male rhinos, coming or going from the waterholes, they look impressive, strong and owners of their land; at night we could see females with babies, we saw three pairs of different ages. The baby moves around the mum, and the mums are clearly protective, they challenge the males which are nearby and move away responding to the threat. The silence at the hide as well as the moonlight made this sighting a mystical moment.

When we got to one waterhole, the tension was evident in the air; all the animals were alert, some of them were making calls, others after a while were leaving; it took us some time to understand the situation: in the area there were hyena, a group of seven, possibly two adults and five young, they were finishing off the remains of meat in a carcass, leaving something for the jackals circling around. One of the adults started to move to the waterhole, with the giraffes' reactions moving in another direction to get close to the water, there not only drinking but also following the springboks seeking another opportunity, with its movements the rest of the group began to move in the direction of the water, however in a more conservative and careful way. This was the first time we saw spotted hyena, it really is a very special animal in terms of its presence and behaviour.

Finally, Etosha let us enjoy the birds: the variety of environments creating a great opportunity to see different species in a small area, making the experience rich and diverse. Leaving this area we went northeast to approach the border with Botswana; we spent our night on the banks of the Okavango River at Shamvura Lodge & campsite, this beautiful place being run by Charlie and Mark, this couple allowed us to understand the challenges of conservation and rural development in the area, as well as the challenge of being together for 35 years; we enjoyed all of the conversations and their black humour.

Kaokoland and Kunene River EN/ES

2017, May 8 to 11

We left the Grootland Pass behind and descended to the dry Kakaoland desert, travelling north to Opuwo, with a brief lateral visit to Sesfontein. We took the Arid Eden Route, that name was a exact description of our experience to it. The rainy season this year was good, and that means that this land received sufficient water to nourish the plants and so looked green all around. The route crosses the Joubertberg  so it is undulating and crosses a lot of river and stream beds, which are now dry but it is possible to see the signs of the strength of the water during the previous months.

Himba and Temba Women
Opuwo means “the end”, it’s reported, and it’s described as a “Wild West outpost”, which is understandable in terms of it’s being the end of the tarred road (although the term “the end” clearly pre-dates the tar) and in terms of it’s being a point for refuelling, stocking up on provisions, etc., before heading further into the northwest, where infrastructure is more limited. We found it interesting to see the presence and interactions of Himba, Herero, Temba, others, and visitors going about their daily business. The Himba and Herero people are the same tribal group, but the Herero people developed their own identity after the British and German colonial times: the women use a long dress, leather or wood shawl, and a particular hat, which honours the love of cattle. This fashion appears unimaginably hot for us, especially when the temperature outside is over 30 deg C. The Himba people, with the ochre colour on their skin and their nudity look at home, at one with the rocks in the landscape, with the cattle and goats in the background. The Temba people are less frequent, but they have a strong presence with their colourful accessories, and the rich natural beauty of their skin.

Epupa Falls
From Opuwo we headed northwest to Epupa Falls, on the Kunene river, which is the border with Angola. The latter part of the route, with the sun setting behind us and illuminating the red rocks brilliantly, is particularly attractive, especially with the impressive presence of the Baobabs, and once we dropped down to the river, we reached a green haven, an eden, with palms on the river bank, and a beautiful campsite, where we camped right on the edge of the water, with a view slightly downstream to the falls themselves, which provided an auditory backdrop to the night and a landscape rich in shadows and reflections illuminated by the moon.

Main Gorge Epupa Falls

The Epupa Falls offered a special setting to explore; we walked to appreciate the different perspectives, the main narrow gorge shows the power of the elements, and the subsidiary falls build paradisiac images with the rocks and the Baobabs on them. The Kunene river flows south from the Angola Mountains and then east to west to end in the Atlantic coast, it has crocodiles and hippos and a lot of islands to facilitate their existence.

Himba boy going into the store place
From Opuwo to Epupa, the Himba people were very present. They live now in a semi-nomadic style, but continuing moving between Angola and Namibia. Their villages are organised in family groups, in which live several wives per husband, with their children. The houses are made of wood and a mix of mud and cow dung. Each woman has her own house and the children sleep with their parents until 7 years old, after that they sleep together by gender, girls in one house and boys in other. During the day the women and children are in the villages doing the hard work of the day to day life, and the men are managing the cattle, goats, and sheep, which represent the wealth of the family. Each wedding costs 5 cows,  3 for the bride's family and 2 for the celebration. One of the distinctive elements of the Himba is the use of ochre by the women; dress and jewellery change according to the maturing process and the gender. Most of the men use western clothes, or have changed heavy leather for light fabrics, which they use in the same traditional way. The women preserve the traditional clothes and accessories, but they also use alternative materials which are lighter for current life, and for the children, it's not rare to see them with a belt or a bracelet made of PVC.

The ochre is used for beauty reasons; it is prepared with red rock and fat made from cow milk. They also make fragrances for the body and the neck; the one for the body has the same ochre colour, the other for the neck is black. The ochre is used only by women as part of the group of elements used to recognise the changes in development from childhood to adulthood. The women never wash their bodies, and continue to use the ochre all their lives. Men wash every day and also use perfumes to be attractive and fresh.

We went east along the river bank, on a great route to Kunene River Lodge, crossing the zebra mountains and all of tributaries to the river, with a mix between rocky and sandy sections, Himba people continuing to be present in our day, saying “ ello" and creating beautiful images in our minds. At Kunene River Lodge, time stopped, the place is set on the river bank, and it's possible simply to see how it flows and sometimes a crocodile reminds us of its more aggressive dimension. It was possible for us to take some time to walk outside the lodge back along the road; the birds and the monkeys caught our attention and we could see some new species.
