Mapungubwe: a walk through history / una marcha a través de la historia. EN/ES

We had originally intended to enter South Africa from Botswana, via Pont Drift, however having received only a 30 day visa for Botswana resulted in our entering via Beitbridge, directly from Zimbabwe (which border proved to be far more efficient than expected). We then headed for Mapungubwe National Park, as originally planned. This park, relatively recently established (in 1995) covers an area around Mapungubwe Hill, the site of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, noted as the first stratified social system in Southern Africa, and a predecessor to the Great Zimbabwe society, in that the royal family lived on the hilltop, with the majority of the community leaving on the surrounding low country around it. The park includes the Hill along with a nature reserve adjoining reserves in both Botswana and Zimbabwe around the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers.

The kingdom hill

We found that the accommodation in the park, whether campsites or lodges, was full, however the people at the reception gate suggested that we tried Mopane Bush Lodge, which was 7 Km away so convenient for visiting the park the following two days, which we had planned. We found the place fairly easily, however on arrival it was akin to the "Marie Celeste”; no one around, although the coffee maker was ready for use, there was hot water for tea, the lights were on… we looked around with no luck finding anyone…. So, we decided to wait for a few minutes, discovered that there was a wireless network - functioning and with no password, so we searched and found a contact number for the lodge and made contact at last with Michelle. Initially it appeared that we were not going to be able to stay, since the lodge was in fact closed; however at this point Njabulo showed up in person, and through a combination of his efforts and those of Michelle, we were able to stay, and this proved to be an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy a comfortable lodge, excellent food, and a wonderful setting in the heart of the mopane bush

Encontramos que el alojamiento en el parque, en campings o lodges, estaba lleno, sin embargo la gente en la recepción nos sugirió que probamos Mopane Bush Lodge, que estaba a 7 km de distancia y conveniente para visitar el parque los dos días siguientes. Parecía que no íbamos a poder quedarnos, ya que el lugar estaba de cerrado, sin embargo, en este punto Njabulo apareció en persona, y mediante una combinación de sus esfuerzos y los de Michelle, pudimos quedarnos, y esto resultó ser una excelente oportunidad para relajarse y disfrutar de un comfortable Lodge, excelente comida, y un entorno maravilloso en el corazón de mopane bush.

On the following morning we followed the advice of Michelle and joined the “Heritage Tour” with local guide Johannes, whose family had lived in the area for generations, and had participated in the rediscovery and excavation of the Mapungubwe royal site, and with four friendly visitors from the Johannesburg area: Japie and Hilda (of whom more later), and Terje and Tro. We explored the Mapungubwe Royal site, walking up to the hill with Johannes, learning of the social setting of the this culture, which occupied the area, it’s believed, from 1075 to 1220 CE. There had been a nomadic population in the area for hundreds, if not thousands, of years prior to this, and it’s believed that elements of the Mapungubwe society later migrated northwards, perhaps integrating into, or initiating, the Great Zimbabwe culture . Johannes did a good job of bringing to life this society, which has only relatively recently been recognized.

After lunch and on the following morning we returned to the park to look for wildlife, and were pleased to encounter zebra, wildebeest, impala, hornbill, giraffe, warthog, and elephant, in large numbers. We were amazed to find the capability of all of these, including, remarkably, the elephant to be seen for a brief glimpse and then disappear within seconds. We were remarkable to see a full-grown elephant, 50 m ahead of us on the track, step into the bush, and when we arrived at the same point 10 seconds later, he had disappeared into thin air! Late in the first afternoon we were pleased to see numbers of elephant making their way down to the river to walk along the sand banks in the evening sun. On the following morning large numbers were seen who had clearly been at the river at dawn and were now dispersing into the bush.

Después del almuerzo y en la mañana siguiente volvimos al parque para buscar fauna, y estuvimos encantados de encontrar cebra, ñus, impala, hornbill, jirafa, jabalí y elefante, en gran número. Nos sorprendió encontrar la capacidad de todos estos, incluyendo, notablemente, el elefante para ser visto por un breve vistazo y luego desaparecen en cuestión de segundos. Nos sorprendió ver un elefante completo, 50 metros por delante de nosotros en la pista, paso en el monte, y cuando llegamos al mismo punto10 segundos más tarde, había desaparecido en el aire! Our visit to this park, recently established, and relatively remote, was our introduction into the excellent South African National Parks system, and also gave us the opportunity to meet Japie and Hilda, who invited us to visit them once we were in Gauteng, and who then showed us such exceptional, warm, and generous hospitality.

Nuestra visita a este parque, relativamente remoto, fue nuestra introduccion al excelente sistema de parques naturales en Sur Africa, y nos dió la oportunidad de conoces a Japie e Hilda, quienes nos invitaron a visitarlos cuando llegasemos a Gounteg, y que luego nos mostraron su excepcional, calida y generosa hospitalidad.
