After taking Dawa, a medicinal tea with much ginger, and stocking up on hot coffee with earthy flavour, we headed off on the road to Chunya. After two hours of slow progress on a road which felt like a punishment, or more positively the perfect excuse to feel in heaven when we finally arrived at our destination, we were at last driving on a surfaced and well-marked road, and we began an ascent which would give us a view of the Great Rift Valley, and with increasing altitude the scenery changed and we were to be surprised by the wide vista which we had missed over the last few days.
Great Rift Valley - Mbeya -Tanzania |
Finally we arrived in Mbeya, and with hunger looked for breakfast and a Toyota workshop to check the car. The owner of the hotel where we breakfasted drew us a pencil and paper map which was much appreciated; its indications were precise and led us without pause to the workshop before midday.
Once there we started checking, took the starter motor apart, cleaned it, greased it, and changed a few components, and once reinstalled it worked. As so often happens, one thing led to another and we did some additional work needed on the car, finally leaving the workshop at the end of the afternoon for the border.
We left Zambia for Nakonde around midnight, Alan's immigration being complicated by the need to switch passports, however when we found that multi-entry e-visas could not be used at this crossing, we simply used the passport with the exit stamp from Tanzania. The formalities for the car were handled with no problem. ...and so, we were ready to embark on the road to Lusaka the following day (later that day, in reality).
Abrazos,
Alan y Marce
