Lusaka and the Great North and East Roads / Lusaka y las rutas grandes - del norte y el oriente.

In Lusaka one finds Cairo Road in the city centre - a somewhat optimistic colonial aspiration, nowadays relatively feasible, albeit a lengthy journey. We arrived in Lusaka (and continued south) in March on the "Great North Road", left and returned in July (to Kasanka) on the same road, and then left for South Luangwa on the "Great East Road".

En el centro de Lusaka uno encuentra la Calle Cairo - más una aspiración colonial que una realidad, si bien es relativamente viable hoy, sería un viaje largo. Habíamos cruzado Lusaka en marzo (y seguido al sur) por "La Gran Ruta del Norte", salimos y volvimos en julio (a Kasanka) por la misma, y nuevamente salimos hacia el sur para llegar a Luangwa por "La Gran Ruta Oriental".

So Lusaka is set on this junction of "great roads". The city itself is a lot bigger than the last two capitals we had visited, and in some ways is similar to Nairobi. In our limited exposure it is also limited in attractions; we find ourselves with little to say about the city other than that we found few good restaurants, found some fairly basic necessities with some difficulties, and have no particular reason to get to know it more.

Lusaka se encuentra en este cruce de "Grandes Rutas". La ciudad es más grande que las dos últimos capitales que visitamos, y en varios sentidos parece similar a Nairobi. En nuestro exposición limitada, encontramos también una ciudad limitada en atracciones; tenemos poco de decir sobre la ciudad más que encontramos unos restaurantes buenos, pudimos encontrar los suministros faltantes con alguna dificultad, y al parecer no tenemos muchas razones para volverla a visitarla otra vez.

Some specific recollections some positives, one less so).

Algunos recuerdos específicos (algunas positivos, otro menos):

 Kamwala Market, this huge commercial area, dominated by arab and Indo-asian traders, let us know the Chitenge business, the chitenge is a fabric used by most of the women in Zambia as a skirt, baby carrier, bag or shawl, made of cotton and printed with vibrant colours and design, which represents the “African style”, even though most of the fabrics are imported from China, India, and Indonisia. The chitenge is sold in yards, from 2 to 10; for a dress it’s necessary to have at lest 6 yards. The number of stores and the diversity of designs and colours are immense, and we took the time to explore the area and select some of them; this experience was worthwhile and we would be happy to repeat it.

El chitenge es tambien una herramienta politica y de uso religioso

El mercado de Kamwala es un área comercial inmensa, dominada por comerciantes arabes e indo-asiáticos, en donde pudimos conocer el negocio del chitenge, el chitenge  es una tela usada por la mayoría de mujeres en Zambia como falda, cargador de bebe, bolsa o Chal, hecha de algodón e impresa en colores y diseños vibrantes, que representan el estilo africano, a pesar de que la mayoría es importada desde China, India o Indonesia. El chitenge es vendido en yardas, desde dos hasta 10, para un vestido se requieren como mínimo 6 yardas. El numero de tiendas y la diversidad de diseños y colores es inmensa, toma tiempo explorar el area y selecciones algunas piezas, esta experiencia fue valiosa y podríamos repetirla de nuevo.

Sugarbush Café : a green and pleasant oasis in Leopard's Hill, with a good café, real coffee, and an excellent craft shop. Also a beautiful place for weddings and kind people to explain to us the complex negotiotion involved in it, in the local tradition.

Sugarbush Café: on oases verde y placentero en Leopard's Hill, con café bueno, cafe de verdad, y una tienda excelente de artesanía. Tambien un bello lugar para bodas y gente calida dispuesta a a explicarnnos la compleja negociacion implicada en ellas, en la tradición local.

Manda Hill Mall : the entrance ramp has a height restriction indicator (as in: if you can pass under it you will have no problem driving in the rest of the parking area). We passed under this with no problem. When leaving again the exit ramp has another of these however it is after (!) the low beam whose headroom it's (presumably) intended to check. Fortunately we checked the clearance at the actual low beam and found that it was not only lower than the first headroom check barrier but also insufficient to allow us to pass! This meant, with the help of the staff, reversing out of the car park via the original entry ramp... had we assumed that clearing the headroom indicator on entering would ensure that we could then drive around the car park and the exit ramp we would have smashed the fuel tanks on the roof racks into the low beam at the exit and ripped them off (with potentially disastrous results).

Manda Hill centro comercial: la rampa de la entrada tiene un indicador del límite de altura dentro el parqueadero (significa: se puede pasar debajo del indicador, no va tener problemas de altura pasando el resto del parqueadero). Pasamos este sin problema. Cuando salimos tuvimos que pasar una viga baja, donde tenía otro indicador de altura pero lastimosamente es después de la viga (!). Afortunadamente chequeamos el espacio antes de pasar y descubrimos que fue más baja que el indicador inicial, y también con insuficiente espacio para pasar. Si hubiéramos asumido que el indicador inicial aseguraba no tener problema habríamos pasado chocando contra la viga y aplastado los bidones con resultados potencialmente desastrosos.

Lusaka then... a big city, with traffic to match, not a lot to attract one to visit, however in Zambia all roads lead to Lusaka, which is why we were there three times.

Lusaka entonces; una ciudad grande, con mucho tráfico, no mucho para atraer una visita, sin embargo en Zambia todas las rutas pasan por Lusaka, y estuvimos allí tres veces.
