We were heading north from Nyika Plateau towards Mbeya in Tanzania and had been looking for a campsite more or less midway between the two. Mushroom Farm had been recommended by several people we had met in our travels; Paul and Julie, befriended in western Zambia and encountered again in Kafue and in Nyika, suggested Lukwe, another campsite close by, and we resolved to look at both.


Fuimos al norte del Plateau de Nyika con destino Mbeya, Tanzania. Habíamos buscado un sitio para dormir entre los dos y recibimos recomendaciones por Mushroom Farm de varios a quienes encontramos en nuestro viaje; Paul y Julie, quien conocimos en Zambia Oriental y encontramos otras veces en Kafue y Nyiak recomendaron Lukwe, cerca de Mushroom Farm, entonces elegimos ver ambos y quedarnos en esta zona.

Both are close to Livingstonia, a mission station established in the late 19th century, and of interest for its history and crafts. Livingstonia is high above the lake, chosen for its cooler weather.

Ambos están ubicados cerca a Livingstonia, una estación de misioneros establecida un el 19 centenario, que es de interés histórico y por sus artesanías. Livingstonia es en los altos arriba del lago, elegido por su clima agradable.

Alan had been under the impression that Livingstonia was a reasonably sizeable town of some importance and had a mental image of the road leading to it from the M1 as a winding tarmac road, similar perhaps to the road from Blantyre down to the Shire floodplain or the road dropping down to the lakeside north of Rumphi (on what we noted half a dozen heavy trucks which had stopped for repairs on the way up or down, and one which had early experienced brake failure and whose driver had managed to crash it "safely" into the roadside rather than ending up in free fall down the precipitous mountainside). His mental model was not modified any by hearing Paul and Julie describe their descent from Livingstonia as taking an hour to drive 10 Km; thinking that they were referring to an alternative route...

Alan tenia el idea que Livingstonia era una ciudad de importancia, de tamaño mediano, y tenía la impresión que la ruta hacia allá sería asfaltada con muchas curvas, como por ejemplo la ruta de Blantyre bajando al valle del rio Shire, o la ruta bajando a la orilla de la laguna al norte de Rumphi, en que vimos varios camiones parados por reparaciones y uno en el que el conductor había chocado contra el paisaje quizás para evitar caer por el precipicio. Su modelo mental no cambio con la historia de Paul y Julie quienes había descrito su descenso de 10 Km en una hora, pensando que era una ruta alternativa.

We arrived at the junction where a large well-maintained sign indicated "Livingstonia 15 Km". Turning onto this road it immediately become a rough track, such that Alan asked whether this was the right road, which it was. We then ascended a steep rocky track with 20 hairpin bends, ascending steeply to 600 m in 10 Km, which took an hour to climb.

Llegamos al cruce donde estaba un aviso grande y bien mantenido diciendo "Livingstonia 15 Km". Girando por esta ruta llegamos a una trocha inmediatamente y Alan pregunto si realmente esta era la ruta, la repuesta fue: si esta es!. Entonces subimos una trocha muy inclinada y rocosa con 20 curvas de 180 grados, subiendo ~600 metros en 10 Km y gastando una hora.





Arriving at the entrance to Mushroom Farm, by this time in the dark, we chose to stay there, and found a very friendly place, with an eclectic range of accommodation options, at very reasonable rates, where we stayed for two pleasant nights.

Llegando a la entrada de Mushroom Farm, ahora en la oscuridad, elegimos quedarnos allá, encontramos un sitio muy amable, con un rango ecléctico de opciones de alojamiento, a precios razonables, donde nos quedamos dos noches placenteras.

In the morning we discovered the impressive views from the place, perched above the cliff edge: a beautiful landscape.

En la mañana discubrimos vistas impresionantes del lugar, puesto a la cima del precipicio: un paisaje hermoso.

Mushroom Farm is truly focussed on sustainability in every sense, and sets an example for us in terms of caring for the environment. It also offered some delights which had difficult to find for some time : fresh fruit and real coffee.

 Mushroom Farm esta enfocado en la sostenibilidad en todo los sentidos, dando un ejemplo a todos en términos de cuidado por el medio ambiente. También nos ofreció algunas delicias que no habíamos encontrado por un tiempo: frutas frescas y café de verdad.

We went to see Livingstonia, which turned out to be a small place, visiting the Stone House museum, two craft shops, and the post office, which turned out to be closed - apparently the person running it was sick that day. Isaac at the craft shop which also sells coffee and ice cream volunteered to buy stamps and post our post cards when the office was open however (which he did).

 Fuimos a ver Livingstonia, es un sitio pequeño, visitamos el Museo de la "Casa de Piedra", dos tiendas de artesanía, y la oficina de correos, que estaba cerrada - aparentemente el señor que la maneja estaba enfermo, pero afortunadamente Issac, el señor de una de las tiendas de artesanía, prometio enviar nuestros postales durante la siguiente semana.

After our pleasant stay we headed off down the "hill" again, taking another hour to descend the 10 Km, and then headed north to the border. The road from the junction at Karonga was in poor condition, with potholes permanently marked with poles; the roads in Malawi had generally been in excellent condition, even so, travelling in Malawi is slow going, principally as a result of the high population density, with very frequent villages and pedestrians and cyclists almost permanently present on the roads.

Después de nuestra estadía bajamos "la colina" otra vez, tomando otra hora para bajar los 10 Km, y salimos hacia la frontera. La carretera al norte de Karonga, estaba en no muy buena condición, con huecos permanentemente marcados con palos; las rutas en Malawi fueron en general buenas, sin embargo el progreso es lento, porque Malawi tiene alta densidad de población, y las rutas están lleno de gente, caminando, usando bicis, vendiendo y comprando.

Crossing the border was straightforward, although took longer than it might have because the Tanzanian Prime Minister was on an official visit. Despite being told on the Malawian side that the border was closed and would not open for another 2-1/2 hours we made it through both sides in less than two hours, and were on the point of leaving when the border post exit was in fact closed, such that we waited another hour before leaving for Mbeya, where we stayed that night.

Cruzar la frontera fue simple, pero tomamos más tiempo porque el Primer Ministro de Tanzania estaba visitando el lugar. A pesar que oímos al lado de Malawi que la frontera fue cerrada, y no sería abierta por 2-1/2 horas más, pasamos ambos lados en menos de dos horas, y estabamos al punto de salir cuando la frontera cerro de verdad, y esperamos una hora más antes llegar Mbeya, donde pasamos la noche.

Nyika National Park

Malawi, July 24 to 26

We left Chintheche with the intention to reach Nyika National Park in the Northern region of Malawi; very soon the route - under construction - became a continuous ascent which was very demanding on our car, so we were travelling slowly to protect the transmission from overheating. When we arrived in Mzuzu in addition to picking up groceries and cash enough to cover the next days' expenses, we tried to service the transmission at Toyota, but they didn't have the tools to do so we continued to the park carefully.

Dejamos Chintenche con la intención de llegar al parque nacional Nyika en la provincia norte de malawi, muy pronto la ruta -en construcción- se convirtió en un continuo ascenso, muy exigente para nuestro auto, así el camino fué lento para proteger el transmition, cuando llegamos a Mzuzu además de comprar comestibles y aprovisionarnos de bastante efectivo para cubrir los gastos de los próximo día, intentamos hacer servicio para el transmition en Toyota, pero ellos no contaban con la capacidad para hacerlo, así que tuvimos que continuar hasta el parque con mucho cuidado.

According to the people in Mzuzu, going to Nyika was not very demanding and we didn't have any more climbing to do, however that was not true; after 50 relatively flat Km to Rumphi, the road to the park gate is an interminable ascent to 2000mAMSL from the 475m AMSL in the Chintheche area; we arrived at the gate at 4:30 in the afternoon, and there we saw for the first time information regarding the latest permitted vehicle entrance time, which was 3:30. Alan displayed all his enchantment  to get authorisation to continue and he was very effective, so we were allowed to use the main road to arrive at the campsite as soon as was  possible.

Para la gente en Mzuzu, ir a Nyika no es muy exigente y  no tendríamos más ascensos significativos, pero esto no fue del todo acertado, después de 50 km relativamente planos hasta Rhumpi, la ruta hasta la puerta del parque es un interminable ascenso hasta los 2000 msnm desde los 1200 en Mzuzu área.  Llegamos a el puerta a 16:30 en el tarde, y allí nos enteramos que la hora de entrada del último vehículo era a las 15:30, Alan mostro todo su encanto para obtener autorización de seguir y hola fue muy efectivo, dada la hora decidimos usar la principal para llegar al campamento tan pronto como fuera posible.

There is only one place to camp in the park and this is in the middle of the immense plateau, After  registration in the dark, and a warm cup of tea which we receive in the restaurant, we moved on to the camp site to find there to our surprise, Paul and Julie, the Australian couple we had first met near Liuwa Plain in Zambia, it was very good to see them again and catch up on progress of their trip. By this time the night was clear and cold, and the big fire made by the staff there was very welcome.

Hay sólo un lugar para acampar en el parque y esto está en el medio de la meseta inmensa, después de registro en la oscuridad, y una taza caliente de té que recibimos en el restaurante, nos trasladamos al sitio de campamento para encontrar allí Para nuestra sorpresa, la pareja australiana que habíamos conocido por primera vez cerca de Liuwa Plain en Zambia, fue muy agradable verlos de nuevo y ponerse al día sobre el progreso de su viaje. Por este tiempo la noche era clara y fría, y el gran fuego hecho por el personal allí fue muy bien recibido por nosotros.

When temperature and bladder pressure led us to leave the car the day was light and cold, but the view from the campsite was simply astonishing; close by bushbuck were grazing in the open, and we could watch them calmly with a cup of tea in our hands.

Cuando la temperatura y la vejiga nos permitió dejar el coche el día estaba luminoso y frío, pero la vista del campamento fue simplemente asombrosa, Cerca bushbucks estaban pastando al aire libre, y pudimos verlos tranquilamente con una taza de té en nuestras manos.

The park is a big mountainous plateau, with beautiful lakes, rivers, native forest, and clusters of hills which offers a variety of views and perspectives; the roads inside the park allow one to explore the diverse ecosystems there.

El parque es una gran meseta montañosa, con hermosos lagos, ríos, bosques nativos y grupos de colinas que ofrece una variedad de vistas y perspectivas; Los caminos dentro del parque permiten explorar los ecosistemas diversos allí.

The park is the home of fabulous herds of roan antelope, reedbuck, zebra, and eland. The roan antelope is a colourful and singular animal, living around the wetter areas and enjoying eating plants from the bottom of the lake, so it is frequent to see them in the water with their faces below the surface but with their ears outside to be alert. The reedbuck is a small sized antelope with brown-grayish fur; they are elusive, and run off to the tops of the hills, producing beautiful images of their silhouettes against the sky.

El parque es el hogar de manadas fabulosas de antílope roan, reedbuck, cebra y eland. El antílope roan es un animal colorido y singular que vive alrededor de las zonas más húmedas y disfruta comiendo plantas del fondo del lago, por lo que es frecuente verlas en el agua con sus rostros debajo de la superficie pero con sus orejas afuera para estar alerta. El reedbuck es un antílope de tamaño pequeño con piel marrón-grisácea; son escurridizos, y corren hacia las cimas de las colinas, produciendo hermosas imágenes de sus siluetas contra el cielo.

 We tried the various paths in the southern end of the park; the landscapes were exceptional and the roads slow enough to enjoy the movement of "walking" the car along the tracks. On these routes we had to remove trees across the road and also to cut one up, but when we saw the third and fourth ahead of us we decided to return and try a different route.

Intentamos los diversos caminos en el extremo sur del parque; Los paisajes eran excepcionales y los caminos lo suficientemente lentos para disfrutar del movimiento del coche al "caminar"a lo largo de las vías. En estas rutas tuvimos que quitar árboles a través de la carretera y también parar a cortar uno, pero cuando vimos el tercero y el cuarto por delante de nosotros decidimos volver y probar una ruta diferente.

After two days exploring the area we left the park with the immense satisfaction of having visited the place and having enjoyed its impressive existence, and also with the wish to return and lose ourselves on the roads not yet explored.

Después de dos días explorando la zona salimos del parque con la inmensa satisfacción de haber visitado el lugar y haber disfrutado de su impresionante existencia, y también con el deseo de volver y perdernos en las carreteras aún no exploradas.

On the way to Nkhotakota / En la ruta hacia Nkhotakota

The sound of the river and the metallic call of the frogs were the music for our night, appropriate music to enjoy the memories of a magnificent day. We left Cape Maclear during the morning, after finishing cleaning the car at the Lodge; a familiar sense of satisfaction comes to Marce every time we can clean the inside of the car, it's like having the house clean.

El sonido del río y la llamada metálica de las ranas fueron la música para nuestra noche, la música apropiada para disfrutar de los recuerdos de un día magnífico. Dejamos Cape Maclear durante la mañana, después de terminar de limpiar el coche en el Lodge; Una sensación familiar de satisfacción llega a Marce cada vez que podemos limpiar el interior del coche, es como tener la casa limpia.

The roads in Malawi are full of people walking and riding bicycles with a huge variety of loads. The bicycle is a very important means of transport, and we notice that people make the effort to have a beautiful and functional one; it's possible to see some of them not only with decoration but also with extra seats for another person or for the family.  Malawi is a country with almost 18 million inhabitants from 34 different tribes, and they live in a very small territory, making this country one of those most densely populated in the region. The number of people on the roads makes travel slow, very slow.

Las carreteras en Malawi están llenas de personas caminando y montando bicicletas con una enorme variedad de cargas. La bicicleta es un medio de transporte muy importante, y nos damos cuenta de que la gente hace el esfuerzo para tener una hermosa y funcional; Es posible ver algunos de ellos no sólo con la decoración, sino también con asientos adicionales para otra persona o para la familia. Malawi es un país con casi 18 millones de habitantes de 34 tribus diferentes y vive en un territorio muy pequeño, haciendo de este país uno de los más densamente poblados de la región. El número de personas en las carreteras hace viajar lento, muy lento.

Mua Mission, place to stay.

On the way, we decided to stop in Mua Mission, it is the oldest catholic mission in the country and they continue their work; there it's possible to visit the Ka'Ngoni art and cultural centre, a breathtaking place in which is possible to appreciate the work of 150 artists from the community,  most of them wood carvers, and also to understand more about the  Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao people. Looking around this volume of beautiful expressions and creativity was a real honour.

En el camino, decidimos detenernos en Mua Misión, es la misión católica más antigua del país y continúan su trabajo; Allí es posible visitar el centro artístico y cultural Ka'Ngoni, un lugar impresionante en el que es posible apreciar el trabajo de 150 artistas de la comunidad, la mayoría de ellos talladores de madera, y también para entender más sobre la gente Chewa, Ngoni y Yao. Mirar alrededor este volumen de bellas expresiones y creatividad fue un verdadero honor.

Out of time, we continued north to Nkhotakota wildlife reserve; we arrived at 1800h, and the gate had just closed, but those in a truck behind us opened the gate and let us in; the people responsible for the park entrance simply said "No problem, you can pay when you leave". We arrived at Bua River Lodge, a beautiful wooden construction on the river bank, a place full of charm and a team who received us with generosity; to our surprise one couple that we had met in Mulanje were there, so catching up on news took us to dinner time.

Fuera del tiempo, continuamos hacia el norte hasta la reserva natural de Nkhotakota; Llegamos a las 1800h, y la puerta acababa de cerrarse, pero las personas de un camión detrás de nosotros abríeron la puerta y nos dejaron entrar; los responsables de la entrada del parque simple dijeron: "No hay problema, pueden pagar cuando salgan". Llegamos a Bua River Lodge, una hermosa construcción de madera en la orilla del río, un lugar lleno de encanto y un equipo que nos recibió con generosidad; para nuestra sorpresa una pareja que habíamos conocido en Mulanje estabaallí, así que nos pusimos al día en noticias hasta la hora de la cena.

During the morning a walk through the bush gave us more insight about the place, its history, and its natural and cultural richness. Close to midday a herd of elephant came down to the river; seeing
them from a walking distance created a different experience, we needed to feel the direction of the wind to avoid their detection and enjoyed every second because we need to leave quickly to avoid interrupting their normal behaviour.

Durante la mañana un paseo por el monte nos dio más información sobre el lugar, su historia y su riqueza natural y cultural. Cerca del mediodía una manada de elefantes bajó al río; verlos desde una distancia a pie creó una experiencia diferente, necesitábamos sentir la dirección del viento para evitar su detección y disfrutamos cada segundo porque deberíamos salir rápidamente para evitar interrumpir su comportamiento normal.

Nkhotakota is a place in a recovery process; it's been under the control of African Parks for only two years, and the numbers of elephant, the level of protection, the professionalism of the scouts, and the involvement of the community indicate a very good future; today it's a beautiful place, in the future also a great game reserve.

Nkhotakota es un lugar en un proceso de recuperación; Ha estado bajo el control de los Parques Africanos durante sólo dos años, y el número de elefantes, el nivel de protección, el profesionalismo de los exploradores y la participación de la comunidad indican un futuro muy bueno; Hoy es un lugar hermoso, en el futuro también una gran reserva natural.

After much conversation, we left between hugs and with a delicious Scottish cake in our hands, we continued north to  Chintheche on a road crowded with people eating sugar cane and selling dried mice.

Después de un montón de conversaciones, dejamos el lugar entre abrazos y con un delicioso pastel escocés en nuestras manos, continuamos hacia el norte usando una carretera llena de gente comiendo caña de azúcar y vendiendo ratones secos hacia Chintheche.

Chintheche is a beautiful place on a white beach on Lake Malawi, the wind coming from the east created a special atmosphere. We spent a single night however plan to return.

Chintheche es un lugar hermoso en una playa blanca en el lago Malawi, el viento que viene del este creó una atmósfera especial. Pasamos una sola noche sin embargo planeamos volver.

Cape Maclear: cichlids in Lake Malawi / cichlids en el Lago Malawi

Our next destination was Cape Maclear (MacLear?). We headed south to leave Liwonde NP then north on the western shore of Lake Malombe, stopping at Mangochi for lunch. The Sun City Night Club and Pizza appeared on google maps so we stopped and found a simple place which provided a good lunch. We continued along the western shore of Lake Malawi past Monkey Bay to Chembe (Lake Maclear). We had looked at possible places to stay and identified the Chembe Eagle's Nest as a good option, and booked online. It may well be a good option if camping, with access to the beach from the campsite, however the room was somewhat disappointing and we chose to move to another place the following day. We felt that our decision was justified when we learned that the Eagles Nest's normal rate was USD 40 less than the price quoted by booking.com and although at first they were willing to bill their normal rate when we were leaving they insisted on billing the higher rate. So: not very good value for money (with the possible exception of the campsite) and, worse, unacceptable business principles.

Nuestro próximo destino fue Cabo Maclear (MacLear?). Salimos del Parque Liwonde al sur y después al norte por la orilla occidental del Lago Malombe, parando a Mangochi para almorzar. Vimos el "Sun City Night Club and Pizza" en google maps entonces paramos y encontramos un sitio simple que nos ofreció un almuerzo bueno. Continuamos por la orilla occidental del Lago Malawi por Bahis del Mono a Chemnitz (Cabo Maclear). Habíamos buscando lugares para dormir y encontrábamos Chembe Eagle's Nest como buena opción e hicimos una reservá por internet, considerando que era un fin de semana. Este sitio puede ser una buena opción para acampar, con acceso a la playa desde el campamento, pero el cuarto fue algo desilusionarte y elegimos buscar otro lugar por el día siguiente. Nuestro decisión nos pareció aún mejor cuando descubrimos que el precio normal fue USD 40 menos que el anunciado en booking.com, y si bien ellos inicialmente acordaron facturar su precio normal, cuando estamos a punto de salir insistieron en cargar el precio más alto. Entonces no muy bien valor por precio (quizás con excepción del campamento) y más importante, principios de negocios inaceptables.

So, our second lodging was the Cape Mac Lodge, which offered a very attractive setting, excellent food, and very friendly staff. We stayed two nights and have added the place to our list of recommendations.

Nuestro segundo alojamiento fue Cape Mac Lodge, que ofrece un ambiente muy atractivo, habitación amplia y confortable por menos que la mitad del precio del sitio anterior, comida excelente, y gente muy amable. Nos quedamos dos noches y ahora el sitio esta en nuestra lista de recomendaciones.

So, to the attractions of Cape Maclear... adding to the diversity of locations in Malawi is this lakeside village, reached via a road over a rocky mountainous peninsula, reminiscent of Newfoundland and Scotland. This is the southern extension of Lake Malawi, enclosed by rocky islands, and although the lake stretches to the horizon to the north it retains a "lake" feel (unlike further north where it feels more like a sea).


Entonces, a las atracciones de Cabo Maclear... otro sitio distinto en el Malawi diverso, donde llegamos por una ruta a través de la península montañosa y rocosa, reminisciente de Newfoundland y Escocia. Ésta es la extensión sureña del Lago Malawi, redeada por islas rocosas, si bien el Lago se extiende al horizonte por el norte aún parece un lago (distinto de la parte de Lago más al norte donde parece más un mar).


It has an ambience somewhat like a Caribbean beach resort, with multiple waterfront lodges. The main tourist activities are water-based, involving boat trips to various focal points close by. We took a boat for the day, visiting the eastern narrows through which one passes if going to Moçambique, then to Thumbi Island, and finally to Otter Point. Fish eagles are frequent, otters were not, and at the two latter sites we snorkelled to see the multi-coloured cichlids for which the area is known.

Su ambiente tiene algo de isla caribeña, con varios “lodges" al frente del agua. Las atracciones para turistas son principalmente enfocadas en el agua, con viajes en barco para visitar islas cercanas y otros puntos de interés. Contratamos un barco por un día, visitando un estrecha al este, desde donde se puede pasar para ir a Moçambique, a la Isla Thumbi, y después a Punto de los Nutrias. Las águilas Pescadoras fueron frecuentes, nutrias no, y en los dos últimos puntos "Careteamos" para ver los ciclides, pequeños peces ornamentales por los que la zona es bien conocida.


Although the cichlids are present in large numbers and are beautiful we were a little underwhelmed, principally because the waters are disappointingly spoiled by noticeable quantities of garbage. Despite being a World Heritage Site it seems that there is inadequate focus on keeping it pristine, with the result, if nothing is done, that the ecosystem will be damaged, as will the local economy which is largely dependent on the World Heritage site.

Sin embargo los ciclides son numerosos y son muy lindos fue algo desilusionante, encontrar tanto en el agua, como en las playas de las islas basura. A pesar de ser un sitio Patrimonio Mundial y Parque Nacional, parece que no hay el suficiente interés en mantenerlo limpio, si nada pasa para manejar los desechos con seguridad el ecosistema seguirá deteriorándose, como también la economía local, para la cual el turismo del sitio Patrimonio Mundial es una fuente significativa.

In the centre of the place, is the fishing village, small local boats going out at night and at dawn to fish, the beaches are full of racks of drying fish and everything happens in the waters of the lake; late in the afternoon, when the sun is less intense, people wash their dishes, clothes, and themselves, a mixture of work and play which is attractive.

En el centro del lugar se encuentra la villa de pescadores, pequeñas embarcaciones salen en las noches y en la madrigadas a pescar, la playa esta llena de toldos en los que se seca en pescado y en el agua del lago sucede todo, al final de la tarde cuando el sol es menos severo, se lavan los platos, las ropas y los cuerpos, una mezcla de trabajo y placer que resulta atractiva.

In the village streets, the men play Bao, the women chat while undertaking the interminable daily tasks, the children play, and the craftsmen seek to sell their wares to tourists.  We met a group of women creating crafts with recycled materials: second hand clothes, plastics, and bottles were the raw materials.

En la calle del pueblo, los hombres juegan Bao, las mujeres conversan mientras hacen sus interminables tareas cotidianas, los niños juegan y los artesanos intentan vender algunos de sus productos a los turistas. So, a relaxing and enjoyable visit, following which we headed north to visit Nkhotakota National Park.

Una visita relajante y de disfrute, después salimos hacia el norte para visitar el Parque Nacional Nkhotakota.

High tea in Thyolo / Té de altura en Thyolo

Malawi, 2017 Jul 17/18

We planned to travel from Mulanje to Liwonde National Park, which is not very far, although the high population density, frequent small villages and narrow (albeit good) roads mean that progress in Malawi is much slower than in surrounding countries.

Planeamos ir de Mulanje al Parque Nacional Liwonde, que no esta lejos, pero la combinación de alta densidad de población/ pueblos frecuentes y carreteras estrechas (a pesar de ser buenas) implica que el avance es más lento que en otros países cercanas.

We left Mulanje and chose to stop on the way at a tea plantation which offered afternoon tea. Huntingdon House is set in a plantation established in 1926, on the Shire Highlands at around 1200 mAMSL, and is a delightful place, with lush gardens, a shady verandah, friendly staff, and a wide range of tea and coffee.

Salimos de Mulanje y elegimos parar en una plantación de te que ofrece "afternoon tea". Huntingdon House está dentro una plantación establecida en 1926, en las alturas del rio Shire, a 1200mAMSL más o menos, y es un sitio delicioso, con jardines ricos, una veranda asombrosa, gente amable, y un amplio rango de te y café.

Amos told us that the house had accommodation available and showed us spacious rooms, in a style reminiscent of the 1950s in the UK. We were taken by the relaxing ambiance and were inspired to stay the night, giving us the opportunity to relax, download photos, catch up on some posts, eat and sleep well, and generally enjoy the setting.

Amos además de recibirnos, nos dió un tour por la casa, y descubrimos que ellos aprecian alojamiento y nos mostró cuartos amplios  con el estilo del Reino Unido de lo 50s. Nos encantó el ambiente relajante y eligimos quedarnos una noche, dándonos la oportunidad de descansar, descargar fotos, escribir "posts", comer y dormir bien, y en general disfrutar el sitio.

In the afternoon we went on a tea-tasting and learned a great deal about how tea is grown and processed, preparing a wide range of teas from the same plants. We were able to taste a wide selection of teas and choose our favourites.

En la tarde tomamos una degustación de te, y aprendimos mucho sobre el proceso de crear te, preparando un rango amplio de tes de la mismas plantas. Pudimos probar un selección de muchas tes y elegir nuestros preferidos.

On the following morning we breakfasted on our own verandah before heading off northwards at midday.

La mañana siguiente desayunamos en nuestra propia veranda antes de saliendo por el norte al mediodía.

Mulanje: finally an opportunity for a good walk/finalmente una oportunidad para una buena caminata.

We climbed out of the Shire Lowlands from Majete NP on the Blantyre road, then east towards Mulanje across the Shire Highlands, with brilliant green tea plantations on either side. We had decided to go to Mulanje since it has a distinct forest ecosystem, however had not appreciated that most visitors go there to walk and climb. On approaching the town of Mulanje we became aware of a huge mass rising from the hazy horizon in front of us, which resolved into a steeply sided granite mountain massif. This is the highest mountain in Malawi, or more accurately, two group of peaks including the highest peak, which rises to over 3000mAMSL from the highland plains below at around 750mAMSL.

Subimos desde las tierras bajas del río Shire del PN Majete por la ruta a Blantyre, entonces en sentido este hacia Mulanje a través de los altos de Shire, con plantaciones verdes brillantes de te a ambos lados. Habíamos elegido ir a Mulanje por su ecosistema de bosque, y no sabíamos que la mayoría de visitantes pasan por allí para caminar y escalar. Cuantos estabamos llegando cercana al pueblo de Mulanje fuimos consciente de una masa enorme subiendo del horizonte al frente de nosotros, que se aclaró cómo un massif granito con paredes vertiginosas. Este es la montaña más alta de Malawi, o más correctamente dos grupos de montañas incluyendo el poco más alto, que sube hasta 3000mANM (?) de los planos altos a 750mANM.

Arriving at the recommended campsite, Likhubula Forest Lodge, we found that we were again camping next to Tom and Cleo, whom we had met at Majete, and that they planned to climb the mountain the following day. The steep cliffs and scale of the mountain which we had seen on the way had persuaded us that we would stick to a day hike around the base of the mountain, so we discussed this with the staff at the Lodge who arranged for a guide to come to meet us in the morning, who would suggest a walk which might be appropriate.

Llegando al campamento recomendada, Likhubula Forest Lodge, descubrimos que acamparíamos otra vez al lado de Tom y Cleo, a quien habíamos conocido en Majete, y habían planeado subir la montaña el día siguiente. Los precipicios e la escala de la montaña nos había influenciado a hacer una caminata más liviana en la base de la montaña, y discutimos esta idea con la gente del Lodge quienes pidieron una guía para reunirse con nosotros en la mañana, y con él elegiríamos una caminata apropiada.

Wyson duly appeared in the morning and suggested that we could walk up to the plateau on the "Skyline" path and back down again on the ? Path, stopping at the waterfall. This was estimated to be around 3 hours ascending and 2-1/2 descending, plus stops, and Wyson thought that we could adjust the plan if the ascent proved too challenging. We had found that we were getting little exercise over the previous 4 months, spending most of time in the car, either travelling long distances to get from A to B, or in game parks where walking is not usually advisable, and so were concerned at being out of condition for a strenuous walk.

Entonces Wyson apareció la mañana y sugirió que podríamos subir al plateau por el sendero "Skyline" y volver por el sendero ???"  y hacer una escala en la cascada. Su estimado fue 3 horas para subir y 2-1/2 horas para bajar, más escalas, y Wyson pensó que podemos ajustar el plan si nos parecía demasiado difícil. Habíamos aceptado que no estábamos haciendo mucho ejercicio en los cuatro meses pasados, porque estábamos en el auto mucho, viajando de A a B, o paseando parques naturales donde no es recomendado salir del auto, y estábamos preocupados con nuestro capacidad para una subida tan retadora.

We set out at 0800h and about 800mAMSL and made our way up the mountain steadily, reaching the Chambe plateau at 1145h and 1750mAMSL. We spent some time on the plateau enjoying the views and resting, and then headed down alongside the river flowing down the steep slopes through beautiful scenery, stopping for lunch at the first crossing of the river, and then at the waterfall, where we braved the icy temperature to swim across the larger lagoon below the waterfall, which was to say the least very refreshing after our exertions. We reached the Lodge again at 1720h, exhausted, pleased to have achieved what we had at first thought beyond us, and having enjoying an outstanding day on the mountain.

Salimos del Lodge a las 0800h y más o menos 800mANM y subimos paulatinamente, llegando al plateau de Chambe a las 1145h y 1750mANM. Nos quedamos allí un rato para disfrutar el paisaje y descansar, y arrancamos la bajada al lado del rió con vistas preciosas, parando para almorzar al primer cruce del rió, y otra vez a la cascada donde entramos a las aguas heladas y cruzamos la laguna debajo de la cascada, que fue refrescante después de nuestro ejercicio. Llegamos al Lodge otra vez a las 1720h, exhaustos, felices de haber logrado lo que habíamos pensado demasiado, y con una experiencia maravillosa a la montaña.

We had delicious dinners in the Lodge, and a good breakfast on the morning we left, and can recommend the food unreservedly.

Las cenas al Lodge fueron deliciosas, y tomamos un desayuno bueno el día de nuestra salida, y recomendáremos la comida sin duda.

Majete game reserve: a paradise / un Paraiso

We decided to go to Majete Game Reserve after hearing it recommended by the tourist information office in Lilongwe; we didn't have any idea about the place before this because information available was general and imprecise.

Decidimos ir a la Reserva Natural Majete después de recibir esta recomendación por parte de la oficina de turismo en Lilongwe, no teníamos vida del lugar porque la información que encontramos era general e imprecisa.

We left Lilongwe to the south discovering a beautiful landscape on the way; Malawi is a more mountainous country than those we visited so far and which offers a variety of vistas. Close to Thyolo, the tea plantations mix with small spots of native forest, ornamental plants, and timber forests, creating a beautiful garden in the landscape.


Dejamos Lilongwe para ir en dirección sur y descubrir un hermoso paisaje en la ruta. Malawi es más montañoso que todos los países antes visitados y esto ofrece una variedad de vistas
Las plantaciones de te, con los resquicios de los bosques originarios, plantas ornamentales sembradas intencionalmente y bosques de maderables hacen del paisaje un bello jardín.



Blantyre is the commercial centre of Malawi, a very active city in the mountains. Leaving the city we had the valley of the Shire River in front of us; a long winding descent letting us enjoy the views during the sunset, after that it was a short route to arrive at the main gate.

Blantyre es el centro del comercio en Malawi, una ciudad muy activa en las montañas. Dejando la ciudad tuvimos el valle del río Shire frente a nosotros, un largo y curvo descenso nos permitió disfrutar de las vistas durante la puesta del sol, después  recorrimos un corto camino para llegar a la puerta principal.

Nyala

Early in the morning we started our exploration of the place; the park is in a mountainous area, so the roads are full of curves, depressions, and inclines, which introduce more "mystery" to the drive, with every change enthusiasm increases waiting for the next vista. Very early we noted the enormous number of hippos in the river, some grunts and their ears out of the water indicated their presence. Also soon we identified a new antelope for us: the Nyala, two caramel females were crossing the road in a depression, from there one protective male faced us, giving us the opportunity to observe him calmly. Their colours, the patterns on the skin, and calm behaviour captured our attention and time.

Temprano en la mañana comenzamos nuestra exploración del lugar, el parque está en una zona montañosa, por lo que las rutas están llenas de curvas, depresiones e inclinaciones, que introdujeron más "misterio" a nuestro paseo, con cada cambio el entusiasmo aumentó esperando por el siguiente avistamiento. Muy temprano reconocíamos la enorme boca de hipopótamos en el río, algunas llamadas y las orejas del agua indicaban su presencia. También rápidamente identificamos un nuevo antílope para nosotros: la Nyala, dos hembras de pelaje caramelo cruzaban el camino en una depresión, desde allí un macho protector nos enfrentó, con la oportunidad de observarlo tranquilamente. Sus colores, el diseño de la piel y los comportamientos tranquilos ocuparon nuestra atención y tiempo.

Waterbuck

This place has a huge variety of antelope and animals in general, and represents a very successful experience in wildlife recovery and conservation; in 2003 the place was extremely depleted, and now it's a source of healthy herds to help populate other parks in the area; the zebra introduction is another success, and seeing them in the bush was special. It's easy to lose focus with the birds around; we were really pleased with the opportunity to see the African white-tailed flycatcher.

En este lugar hay una  enorme variedad de antílopes y animales en general, y representa una muy exitosa experiencias de recuperación y conservación de fauna, en 2003 el lugar fue sumamente empobrecido, y ahora es una fuente de rebaños sano  para ayuda a otro parques alrededor del país, la re- introducción de elefantes y cebras son unos de los éxitos, y ver esta últimas entre los arbustos fue especial.. Allí fue fácil perder la atención con las aves alrededor, y estamos complacidos de haber visto el africano cola mosquero.

The night-time was also rich; we were able to see some nocturnal animals which we had been hoping to see for a long time: porcupine and civet, it was also good to have the opportunity to appreciate them in a wild condition rather than solely in books.

La noche también fue rica, pudimos ver algunos animales nocturnos que esperamos ver por mucho tiempo: puerco espín y civet, es muy agradable tener la oportunidad de apreciarlos en su condición salvaje más allá de los libros.

The panorama of Majete was still more astonishing with the sighting of two lions during the following morning, since we always spend time to look around and wait as a good practice. The pride in Majete has 8 individuals; seeing these two males was magnificent - their beauty, power, and behaviour awake all the senses.

El panorama de Majete fue aún más impactante con el avistamiento de dos leones a la mañana siguiente, como siempre mirar alrededor y esperar es una buena práctica, la manada disponible en Majete tiene 8 individuos, ver a estos dos machos fue magnífico por su belleza, poder y comportamiento pausado y alerta que despierta todos los sentidos.

The kind and helpful people, the richness of the reserve, the results achieved from the conservation perspective, and also the facilities available make this a place compulsory for those who want to experience wildlife in all its splendour, in calm and solitude.

La gente amable y servicial, la riqueza de la reserva, los resultados obtenidos desde la perspectiva de la conservación y también las instalaciones disponibles hacen de este un lugar obligatorio para aquellos que quieran experimentar la vida silvestre a través de su esplendor, en calma y soledad.

Lilongwe: not a village / Lilongwe: no un pueblo

We entered Malawi with little fuss, passing the border formalities quite quickly. It was a disappointment that at our first police checkpoint we were asked to pay a bribe,  which we did not, however it was sad to encounter this evidence of corruption. It should be said that we have so far not met any other requests for a contribution at the many police checks we have passed since then.

Entramos a Malawi sin problemas, manejando los trámites de la frontera fácilmente. Fue una desilusión que cuando pasamos el primer retén policial nos pidieron pagar una vacuna, que no pagamos, sin embargo fue triste encontrar esta evidencia de corrupción. Tenemos que decir que hasta ahora no habíamos tenido que enfrentar estas solicitudes en ninguno de los múltiples retenes que habíamos pasado antes.

We had heard Lilongwe described as a village: it's not a village, although compared with Lusaka or Nairobi it's much smaller, with less traffic, and so feels a lot less of a major city. However, it's a lot more than a "village". We stayed in the "old town", visited the "new town" and also the wildlife reserve between the two, which creates an odd, albeit convenient, separation.

Habíamos oído una descripción de Lilongwe como un pueblo: no es un pueblo, sin embargo comparado con Lusaka o Nairobi es una ciudad mucho más pequeña, con menos tráfico, mejor infraestructura vial y entonces parece menos una capital. Sin embargo es mucho más que una villa. Nos quedamos en la "ciudad vieja", visitamos la "ciudad nueva", también la reserva natural entre las dos, que crea una separación curiosa, si no conveniente.

The most impressive building in the city may be the parliament building, although the massive Chinese Embassy runs it close. The main market, alongside the bus station, is a huge range of small stands selling everything from wooden(!) extension plugs to live chickens, although the range of produce was more limited than one might expect. We took advantage of the full-service fabrics zone, where one can buy chitenge fabric from the many vendors and then have the material tailored into clothing there and then by tailors with impressive capability to take a few measurements and create a well-made garment in a very short time.

El edificio más impresionante en la ciudad puede ser el Edificio de Parliamento, pero la embajada China es inmensa. El mercado principal, al lado del estación de buses, tiene bastantes sitios pequeños vendiendo todo, desde tomas eléctricas hechas en madera(!) hasta pollos vivos, pero el rango de mercado fresco fue mucho más limitado de lo que uno puede esperar. Tomamos ventaja de la zona "servicio completo" de textiles, donde además comprar chitenge en uno de los múltiples puesto de ventas de telas, pudimos  inmediatamente usar los servicios de sastrería al lado para crear, con medidas rápidas, ropas bien hechas en poco tiempo (2 horas).

Our first and last dinner were both in the very conveniently located Ad Lib, where the original owner, much travelled, took advantage of our presence to practise his Spanish. The Kiboko Town Hotel was friendly, did our laundry efficiently, and washed the car on our arrival. Not exactly the Ritz, but a good option for a few nights in the city.

Nuestras primera e última cenas fueron en un restaurant muy conveniente, Ad Lib, justo al lado del hotel, donde el dueño original, viajero por muchos países, tomó ventaja de nuestra presencia para practicar su español. El Kiboko Town Hotel el servicio fue amable, hicieron nuestra lavandería eficientemente, y lavaron nuestro vehículo cuando llegamos. No exactamente el Ritz, pero una buena opción por unas noches en la ciudad.

We went to the wildlife reserve, where we had a good lunch at the new café, and took a guided tour of the sanctuary, where a home is provided for animals which have been rescued, most of which will live out their days in the sanctuary, although some have been successfully returned to the wild.

Fuimos a la reserva natural, dónde almorzamos bien en el café nuevo, y tomamos un tour del santuario, que ha establecido buenos ambientes para los animales rescatados, la mayoría de ellos se van a quedar allá por el resto de sus vidas, dado que por las condiciones de confinamiento previo, no están habilitados para vivir en entornos salvajes, sin embargo varios, han sido trasladados con éxito a la naturaleza.

We took care of several administrative tasks, including a service for the Land Cruiser, and acquired a local SIM easily. We also found that Malawi is another economy based principally on cash, and where the maximum which can be taken out from the ATMs which actually accepted our cards is low enough to be inconvenient. We then headed south to Majete National Park. Of interest on this journey was that google maps could not identify the obvious and practical route south to Blantyre on the M1, perhaps because this road runs for a significant part of its route along the border with Moçambique, such that in practical terms one side of the road is in Malawi and the other is in Moçambique, with no form of barrier between the two.

Manejamos varias tareas administrativas, incluyendo mantenimiento por el Land Cruiser, y las compras de la vida diaria. Descubrimos que Malawi es otro país basado en efectivo, y solo es posible sacar efectivo de los cajeros en cantidades inconvenientes, cuando los cajeros aceptan nuestros tarjetas. Salimos de Lilongwe por el sur para ir al Parque Nacional Majete. Es interesante que esta ruta fue imposible de identificar por google maps, quizás porque la ruta por mucho de su trayecto es esencialmente la frontera entre Malawi y Moçambique, con un lado de la carretera en Malawi y el otro en Moçambique, con ninguna forma de barrera entre los dos.
