We left the highlands and headed south-east into the lowveld. We were making for Mavela Lodge, in the Zululand Rhino Reserve. After Kruger NP we were interested to see how a private lodge would be. There were no other guests at the lodge on our first night, and one other couple on the second. So we experienced a private game drive the following morning, and game drives with only four of us and our guide Sam the following afternoon and morning. As expected, game was unpredictable: over the two days we saw game which we had previously encountered in Kruger, and also (new for us) Nyala, great eagle owls, a closer look at a secretary bird, a single lion on the first morning, and a group of three lion that afternoon. It was wonderful to experience this group relaxing in the riverbed, occasionally taking interest in us, however mostly only among themselves. On leaving we chose to take the slower route inside the reserve, which proved to be a good decision, since we saw a surprising amount of game for midday, including a rhinoceros at one of the water holes. 

Dejamos las tierras altas y nos dirigimos hacia el sureste hacia el "lowveld". Estábamos llendo a Mavela Lodge, en la Reserva de Rhino de Zululand. Después de Kruger NP estábamos interesados ​​en ver cómo seria un Lodge privado. No había otros huéspedes en el Lodge en nuestra primera noche, y solo otra pareja en la segunda. Así que experimentamos un paseo privado en la mañana siguiente, y con sólo cuatro de nosotros y nuestro guía Sam en la tarde y la mañana del segundo dia. Como era de esperar, Los animales fueron impredecible: durante los dos días vimos animales que habíamos encontrado anteriormente en Kruger, y también, nuevos para nosotros, Nyala, búho águila, una vista más cercana a un pájaro secretario, un león la primera mañana, y un grupo de tres leones esa tarde. Fue maravilloso experimentar este grupo relajando en el lecho del río seco, ocasionalmente mostrando interés en nosotros, sin embargo principalmente jugando sólo entre ellos. Al salir nos decidimos a tomar la ruta más lenta dentro de la reserva, que resultó ser una buena decisión, ya que vimos una cantidad sorprendente de animals para el mediodía, incluyendo un rinoceronte en uno de los abrebaderos de agua.

We then headed on southwards to St Lucia, an attractive small town act the south end of the iSimangaliso reserve. On the way we enjoyed lunch at the Figtree, adjacent to Ilala weavers, then spent the last hour of the day in the reserve on the West Bank of the estuary, which proved to be rich in animals. We stayed at a very pleasant guest house in St. Lucia, which is known for hippos wandering the streets at night, although we saw none. The following day we spent the day in the reserve on the east bank, and although we were less fortunate in terms of animals, it was a pleasant day, and we had a picnic lunch at Cape Vidal.

Luego nos dirigimos hacia el sur a Santa Lucía, una pequeña ciudad atractiva al extremo sur de la reserva de iSimangaliso. En el camino disfrutamos del almuerzo en el Figtree, adyacente a los tejedores de Ilala, luego pasamos la última hora del día en la reserva en la Ribera Occidental del rio, donde vimos una variedad de animales. Nos alojamos en una casa de huéspedes muy agradable en Santa Lucía, lugar que es conocido por los hipopótamos vagando por las calles durante la noche, sinembargo no vimos ninguno. Al día siguiente pasamos el día en la reserva en la orilla oriental, y aunque fuimos menos afortunados en términos de animales, fue un día agradable, y tuvimos un almuerzo de picnic en el Cabo Vidal.

The following day we left for Durban, entering the city along the north coast, where it's green and pleasant, and reminded us of Singapore. We found our way easily to the Toyota agency, where we wanted to fix the air conditioning in the car, which had started to make a rattling sound, which we hoped was simply accumulated debris in the fan, but which was diagnosed as a worn motor. This dealer didn't have a replacement, and we did not have time to wait for one to be delivered from Johnnanesburg, so we decided to make an appointment with one of the dealers in Capetown to have this fixed (more on this later...). We also had a faulty headlight sorted out, although adjusting the headlights in terms of avoiding dazzling other drivers proved to be beyond the capacity of the dealer (more on this also). 

Al día siguiente nos fuimos a Durban, entrando en la ciudad a lo largo de la costa norte, que es verde y agradable, y nos trajo recuerdos de Singapur. Encontramos fácilmente a la agencia de Toyota, donde queríamos reparar el aire acondicionado del carro, que había comenzado a chirriar, que esperábamos fuera simplemente acumulación de  escombros en el ventilador, pero que fue diagnosticado como un motor desgastado . Este concesionario no tenía un reemplazo, y no tuvimos tiempo para esperar uno de Johannesburg, así que decidimos hacer una cita con uno de los Talleres en Ciudad del Cabo para arreglarlo (más sobre esto más tarde .. .). También logramos reparar un faro defectuoso, aunque ajustar la alineación de las luces para evitar encandilar a los otros conductores fue más allá de la capacidad del taller (más sobre esto también). 

The rest of the day was spent, along with the following morning, enjoying what Durban had to offer, which provided to be less than hoped. We visited the "Workshop" and Central market, and went for a walk in the centre, concluding after a while that the value didn't justify the atmosphere, which had our radar lit up. The recommended Durban Indian restaurant proved OK but not exceptional. The following morning our visit to Victoria Market was enjoyable and productive, however when we expressed our idea of visiting the Madressa Arcade, which we thought would be of interest, this was seen as highly unadvisable so we gave it up and returned to the hotel to leave for the Drakensberg. 

El resto del día se pasó, junto con la mañana siguiente, disfrutando lo que Durban tenía que ofrecer, que results menos que lo esperado. Visitamos el "Workshop" y mercado central, y fuimos a caminar en el centro, concluyendo después de un tiempo que el valor no justificaba el ambiente, en el que teniamos nuestras alertas de seguridad encendidas. Un restaurante Indio al estilo de Durban resultó bien, pero no excepcional. La mañana siguiente nuestra visita al mercado de Victoria  fue agradable y productivo, sin embargo, cuando expresamos nuestra idea de visitar la Arcada de Madressa, que nos pareció que sería de interés, esto fue visto como muy peligroso así que regresamos al hotel para salir para el Drakensberg.
