Crispetas en el desierto / Popcorn in the desert

After a trip that we felt was longer than planned, perhaps because most of the time we were in transit on a previously travelled route, and because for the last 120 Km, the landscape is a highly consistent desert; we finally arrived in Lüderitz, a town on the coast of Namibia, well known as a beautiful representation of the German colonial style.

Después de un viaje, que sentimos más largo de lo planeado, quizás porque la mayoría del tiempo estuvimos transitando por una ruta previamente recorrida y porque el los últimos 120 km, el paisaje es un desierto altamente consistente; finalmente llegamos a Lüderitz, un pueblo en la costa de Namibia, bien reconocido como una representación bella del estilo alemán de la colonia.

We decided to explore the town, following the heritage self-guided walking tour, in order to see the more iconic buildings in the city; even though there are some buildings in which we could appreciate the Germanic architectural influence, we did not find any really special one, however In a country independent for only 27 years, every building older than a century must be special. The special thing we did found was the restaurant, and we recognised this by the long line of people waiting for opening time; in the face of this evidence we decided to join the line, just two minutes before opening time, and our decision was appropriate, we were the last couple with a table and we could satisfy our gastronomical expectations, in a very exquisite and huge way. So if you go to Lüderitz remember Barrels is the place to go.



Decidimos explorar el pueblo, siguiendo la ruta de la herencia, en la cual es posible apreciar la arquitectura con influencia alemana, nosotros no encontramos nada realmente especial, sin embargo en un país que ha sido independientes por tan solo 27 años, cada edificio con más de un centenario tiene que ser especial. La cosa especial que si encontramos fue el restaurante, y lo reconocimos por la fila larga de gente esperando por la hora de apertura; con esa evidencia decidimos unirnos a la fila, tan solo dos minutos antes, y nuestra decision fue apropiada, fuimos los últimos en  en conseguir una mesa y pudimos satisfacer nuestras expectativas gastronómicas, en una forma gigantesca y exquisita. After several days with no internet connection, it was time to work on all our electronic and virtual tasks, so we took care of them and joked about what we could do if we were in Lüderitz for a week: having created some almost ridiculous plans and having laughed a lot about them, we decided that our time in Lüderitz was sufficient except for the market at the waterfront, which we planned to visit the next day in the morning. This was a valuable visit; there was a special exhibition in the market associated with the crayfish festival, so it was possible to see food, crafts, and Oshiwambo people's traditional clothing; the women wear pink or red striped cloth dresses, with geometric design at critical points. Marce also had the chance to try dried mopane caterpillar and a dry beetle, the first was simply dry with no flavour, the second has the same flavour of the culinary ant we eat in Colombia.

Después de varios días sin conexión a internet, era hora de trabajar en todas nuestras tareas electrónicas y virtuales, así que las hicimos y hablamos de lo que podríamos hacer si estuviéramos en Lüderitz durante una semana, después de haber creado algunos planes casi ridículos y de habernos reido mucho sobre ellos, decidimos que nuestro tiempo en Lüderitz había terminado, excepto por el mercado en el paseo marítimo, que planeamos visitar al día siguiente por la mañana. Esa fue una visita valiosa, había una exposición especial en el mercado asociada con el festival de cangrejo, así que fue posible ver comida, artesanías y la ropa tradicional de la gente de Oshiwambo, las mujeres usan vestidos de tela rayada rosa o roja, con diseño geométrico en la puntos críticos. También tuve la oportunidad de probar la oruga mopane seca y un escarabajo seco, la primera fue simplemente seca sin sabor, el segundo tiene el mismo sabor de la hormiga culona que comemos en Colombia.

Lüderitz

We left the town and had to re-take the same route as the previous day: the yellow sand and the small mountains and dunes in the background were with us for 110 Km, affected only by the shadows of the clouds, something very useful to break the monotony of the road. Suddenly, a noise and steam were evident and we had to stop: the radiator header tank was very broken, it was like popcorn; our first real problem was taking place at this moment, we looked in all directions and only the sand and the rocky mountains were around us.

Dejamos el lugar y tuvimos que volver a utilizar la misma ruta  del día anterior, el amarillo de la arena y las pequeñas montañas y dunas en el fondo estuvieron con nosotros durante 110 km, afectadas sólo por las sombras de las nubes, algo muy útil para romper la monotonía en el camino. De repente, un ruido y el vapor eran evidentes y tuvimos que parar, la cubierta superior del radiador estaba muy roto, era como una palomitas de maíz, nuestro primer verdadero problema estaba teniendo lugar en ese momento, miramos en todas direcciones y sólo arena y las montañas rocosas alrededor.

We decided to glue the remnants in place, fill the radiator and go to Aus - a town 10 Km further on. At that moment James and Vanya arrived and offered to help, and their contribution was amazing; we worked together, using both of the options we had available for repairing the popcorn and after an hour they escorted us to the town. The temporary solution worked well enough to allow us to get there, with some remaining leaks evident. The garage in Aus didn't have the capacity to manage this problem, but they had some useful items to try to reduce the leaks, as well as good advice; to return to Lüderitz - yes, you are reading this correctly - back to Lüderitz again.

Decidimos poner las partes de nuevo en su sitio y pegarlas, llenar el radiador de nuevo e ir a Aus, un pueblo a 10 km. En ese momento James y Dania, llegaron a ayudar, y su contribución  fue impresionante, trabajamos juntos, usamos las dos opciones que teníamos disponibles para reparar la crispeta y después de una hora, nos escoltaron al pueblo. La solución temporal funcionó bastante bien para dejarnos llegar, con algunas fugas evidentes. El garaje en Aus no tenía la capacidad para manejar estos problemas, pero tenían algunas cosas útiles para tratar de reducir las fugas, y regresar a Luderitz. - Está leyendo bien: a Luderitz de nuevo-

After one hour making additional fixes, we left Aus to our destination, stopping every 20 Km to check and fill the radiator with water. We didn't arrive early enough to get to the garage, but on time for a good dinner (Barrels) and a good sleep. This weekend (the Crayfish Festival) every place in this city was booked, so a new challenge in addition to our car problem was to find a place to stay if the car could not be fixed on time to go the following day, however this was a tomorrow problem; now it was time to rest and recover our energy.

Después de una hora haciendo arreglos adicionales, dejamos Aus hacia nuestro destino, paramos cada 20 km par verificar y llenar con agua, no llegamos lo suficientemente temprano para llevar el carro al taller, pero a tiempo para una buena cena y dormir. Este fin de semana cad sitio en Luderitz está reservado, es un reto adicional entonces conseguir donde dormir si no logramos reparar el carro mañana, pero ese es el problema de mañana, ahora es tiempo de descansar y recuperar nuestra energía.

PS - the following day Udo (the recommended expert) ordered a new radiator from Windhoek, which would require a few days to arrive. Given that it was a long weekend in Namibia this meant that we had to plan on the car's being ready again a week later, so with the help of Udo's wife we rented a 4x4 pickup and set off on a modified itinerary, with relatively minor variation from our original plan, other than the obvious need to return to Lüderitz (again) to drop the rental pickup and pick up our car again. So we set off from Lüderitz to Aus again, through the familiar desert landscape.

El día siguiente Udo (el experto recomendado) pidió un radiador nuevo a Windhoek, que toma unos días para llegar. Considerando que es puente en Namibia, el auto podrá estar listo en una semana, entonces con ayuda de la esposa de Udo alquilamos una camioneta 4x4 y arrancamos un itinerario nuevo, con cambios relativamente menores contra nuestro plan original, con excepción de la necesidad de volver a Lüderitz otra vez para devolver la camioneta y recoger nuestro auto. Salimos una vez más de Lüderitz por Aus, a través del paisaje desértico familiar.

Por las tierras del sur de Namibia / Through the southern lands of Namibia

La primera imagen que tenemos de Namibia es la de montañas barridas, como los patios de tierra de las fincas, con las huellas de las escobas todas en la misma dirección, las montañas entrando por el sur, son rocosas y sus estratos estás bien delineados, por eso tenemos la sensación de montañas recién barridas.

The first image we had of Namibia was the brushed mountains, like earth patios in the farms, with the tracks of the brush in the same direction, the mountains coming from the south are rocky and their strata well delineated, which gave us the sensation of mountains recently brushed.

La segunda sensación tiene que ver con el espacio, el paisaje es amplio y "vacío", no porque no haya nada, es porque no está repleto de cosas, carros, personas o poblados, los pueblos están bien establecidos y hay más de 100 km entre ellos. Le cielo es de un azul limpio, con nubes blancas en el horizonte, que crean la sensación de una cámara alta y espaciosa.

The second sensation is related with the space, it is wide and "empty", not because there is nothing, but because it is not replete with things, cars, people, or towns; the towns are well established and there are more than 100 Km between them. The sky is a clean blue, with white clouds on the horizon, which provokes a sensation of a high and spacious chamber.

Nos movemos hacia el norte y luego hacia el este para alcanzar nuestro primer destino, es posible observar diversas cubiertas vegetales en las infinitas planicies que pasamos. El ambiente en general es seco, inicialmente, las plantas son pequeñas y capaces de cambiar el color rojizo del suelo por un verde oliva refrescante, luego aparecen plantas más grandes, pero más dispersas que producen en efecto de un paisaje lleno de puntos; al subir un poco más los árboles aparecen, siguiendo el curso de lo que algunas veces en el año es un río, pero ese día solo fue un cause silencio,  haciendo que la frescura de la vista contraste con la temperatura que sentimos en el resto del cuerpo.

We headed to the north and then to the east to reach our first destination; it was possible to observe a diversity of plant cover on the infinite plains which we were crossing. The environment is dry, initially the plants were small and capable of changing the red earth to a refreshing olive green, then bigger plants appeared, but were more dispersed and produced an effect of dotted landscapes, we continued a little more and the trees were there, following the river which some times in the year flows but that day was only a silent route, making the view fresh in contrast with the temperature we were feeling.

Llegamos a keetmanshoop un domingo en la tarde, y como en buen domingo, todo estaba desierto, al frente de la estación de gasolina, una tienda de abasto fue más que suficiente para comprar algo fresco para el braai de la noche, seguimos a Quiver tree forest para acampar. El Quiver Tree fue una de esas rarezas que encontramos durante la planeación, así que poder apreciarlo era algo esperado. Lo que nunca nos imaginamos fue ver en las cantidades y extensión en que pudimos apreciarlo.

We arrived at Keetmanshoop on Sunday afternoon, as appropriate to a good Sunday, everything was deserted; opposite the gas station there was a small store, with more than enough to buy something fresh for the night braai; we continued to Quiver Tree Forest to camp. The quiver tree was one of the strange things we found when we were planning, so to able to appreciate it was expected. What we had not imagined was the number and extent we found in this forest.

Esta planta es un aloe, Aloe Dichotoma, y crece solitaria en ambientes rocosos, puede crecer hasta 9 metros de altura y su tallo está confirmado por una corteza amarilla y gris preciosa a la vista y al tacto. Por la alta concentración rocosa de la zona, los quiver han crecido en grupos y es posible observarlos en una gran extensión de forma muy intensa. Existen otras dos variedades de quiver tree en la zona, que pudimos ver frecuentemente en Richtersveld National Park.

This plant is an aloe, Aloe Dichotoma, it grows alone in a rocky environment, can grow up to 9 metres high and its trunk has yellow and grey bark which is beautiful to see and touch. Because there is a high concentration of rocks in this area, the Quivers have grown in groups, and it is possible to see them over a large area, in an intense development. There are other two variations of Quiver in the area, which we saw more frequently in Richtersveld National Park.

Volviendo hacia el sur, una ruta en tierra nos llevó al Parque Natural Gondwana y al cañon Del Río Fish. El paisaje seco, el espacio y la casi inexistencia de otros vehículos circulando trajo a nuestra mente los recorridos patagónicos, sin duda otros animales, pero esta vez fueron las avestruces cuidando y corriendo con sus crías las que nos deleitaron. Los springbok y los oryx aparecen intempestivamente, poniendo vida a la escena y recordándonos con su solitaria presencia la belleza de lo simple.

Returning to the south, an unsurfaced road took us to the Gondwana Natural Park and to Fish River Canyon. The dry landscape, the space, and the almost non-existence traffic brought to our minds our Patagonian trips, without a doubt with different animals; this time the ostriches running and taking care of their young were our delight. The springbok and the oryx appear unexpectedly giving life to the scene, reminding us with their lonely presence the beauty of the simple.

El cañón del Río Fish es majestuso, se extiende por más de 100 kilómetros y nos despertó, no solo por su grandeza, también por la diversidad de elementos que lo componen desde el punto de vista geológico, natural y cultural. Entender su geología, nos obligó a revisar los tiempos geológicos que aún no caben en la mente -yo siempre necesito sacar mi escala de tiempos geológicos y ubicar la información allá para comprender-, pudimos reconocer una gran variedad de plantas, observar formas y textura en las rocas y explorár las tradiciones de los pueblos San y Nama, especialmente este último muy presente entre las personas a nuestro alrededor.

The Fish River Canyon is majestic; it extends for more than 100 Km and it awoke us, not only because of its size but also because of the diversity of elements involved in its geological, natural, and cultural dimensions. To understand its geology obliged us to check the geological timescales which still don't fit in my (Marce's) mind - I always need to take out my geological time scale card, to refer to this information to understand. We were able to recognize a huge variety of plants, saw a lot of forms and textures in the rocks, and explored the traditions of the San and Nama people, especially this latter, very present in the people around us.

Namibia es un país con solo dos millones de habitantes, gente amable, orgullosa no sólo de su país sino de su origen tradicional, llenos de paisajes exhuberantes y de sonrisas cálidas que crean una bienvenida en el alma.

Namibia is a country with only two million inhabitants, kind people, proud of their country and their traditional origins, full of exuberant landscapes and warm smiles which create a welcome in the soul.

Augrabies Falls and Richtersveld: a SANParks dessert / Augrabies Falls y Richtersveld: un postre de SANParks.

The national parks in South Africa have been a delight. We ended our sojourn in the country with two, both of which lie in the Northern Cape, and are bounded by the Orange River, South Africa's natural border with Namibia. This region is desert and semi-desert, the southern area being part of the Karoo at its western extremity, the northern being desert, with a transition eastwards into the Kalahari. The Orange River is a brilliant green ribbon carving its way through the dry mountains to the sea.

Los parques nacionales en Sur África han sido una delicia. Terminamos nuestra estancia en el país con dos, ambos situados en el Cabo Norteño, y están limitados por el río Orange, la frontera natural de Sudáfrica con Namibia. Esta región es desértica y semi-desértica, la zona sur hace parte del Karoo en su extremo occidental, el norte es desierto, con una transición hacia el este en el Kalahari. El río Orange es una cinta verde brillante tallando su camino a través de las montañas secas al mar.

We left Capetown and headed north through increasingly dry country, breaking the journey at Vanrhynsdorp, in the attractive Letsatsi Lodge, which fits its environment well. Then east from Springbok through drier country until as we approached the river near the park we saw greenery.

Augrabies Falls NP is focussed around the falls themselves; an amazing gorge created by the flow of the river, with the falls at a step on its way to the ocean. The park includes trails which one can drive, with a fair amount of game, as well as many of the striking Quivertrees, emblematic of the environment. We saw a beautiful Pygmy Falcon, among other birds which we were less fortunate in photographing.

Salimos de Ciudad del Cabo y nos dirigimos hacia el norte a través de un país cada vez más seco, rompiendo el viaje en Vanrhynsdorp, en el atractivo Letsatsi Lodge, que se adapta bien a su entorno. Luego hacia el este de Springbok a través de un área más seca y solo hasta que nos acercamos al río cerca del parque vimos vegetación. Augrabies Falls NP se centra en las cataratas; un cañón increíble creado por el flujo del río, con las caídas en el paso en su camino hacia el océano. El parque incluye senderos en los que se pueden conducir, con una buena cantidad de animales  así como muchos de los sorprendentes Quivertrees, emblemáticos de la región. Vimos un halcón pigmeo hermoso, entre otras aves que no tuvimos la fortuna de fotografiar.


Richtersveld is in the far northwest of South Africa, along the Orange River, with the park office adjacent to the border post at Sendelingsdrif. The last 90 Km of the road are gravel, with bad corrugations, however through ruggedly beautiful country. It had become clear that we would not make it to our booked campsite in time so we called the park and were told that there would be no problem camping at the campsite at the park gate. We got the impression that this was not an unusual occurrence. The following day we headed for de Hoop campsite through stunning scenery, making our down to the site on the riverbank through a rocky dry riverbed. The next day was a long day through this amazing dry mountain desert, on roads which ranged from rocky defiles, through sandy river beds, to the Helskloof road, over the aptly-named pass. This road can best be described as "slow going" through beautiful scenery; by no means as challenging as the routes leading down to (and back from) the two places we visited on the Orange River - simply a very rocky surface.

Richtersveld se encuentra en el extremo noroeste de Sudáfrica, a lo largo del río Orange, con la oficina del parque adyacente al puesto fronterizo de Sendelingsdrif. Los últimos 90 km de la carretera son de gravilla, con malas corrugaciones, sin embargo a través de rugosamente hermoso paísaje. Había quedado claro que no llegaríamos a tiempo al camping reservado, así que llamamos al parque y nos dijeron que no habría ningún problema acampando en el camping en la puerta del parque. Tenemos la impresión que esto no fue una ocurrencia inusual. Al día siguiente nos dirigimos al campamento De Hoop a través de impresionantes paisajes, haciendo nuestro descenso al sitio, en la orilla del río, a través de un cauce rocoso de río seco. El siguiente día fue un largo día a través de este increíble desierto de montaña seca, en carreteras que van desde los desfiladeros rocosos, a través de los bancos de arena del río, a la carretera de Helskloof, sobre el pase bien llamado así . Este camino se puede describir mejor como "lento" a través del paisaje hermoso; no es tan difícil como las rutas que conducen a (y volver de) los dos  lugares que visitamos en el río Orange - simplemente una superficie muy rocosa.

We camped at both parks, taking advantage of SAN Parks' excellent campsites: at Augrabies the site was pleasantly wooded with good facilites however was populated not only with humans but also with vervet monkeys in large numbers, who had become adept at stealing food, including some of ours; de Hoop campsite at Richtersveld was, contrary to what we had seen reported on one forum, clean and comfortable, beautifully situated in the banks of the river. A great place to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the desert in front of the flowing water, with the brilliance of the night sky later.

Acampamos en ambos parques, aprovechando los excelentes instalaciones de SANParks: en Augrabies el sitio estaba agradablemente arbolado con buenas instalaciones sin embargo estaba poblado no sólo con seres humanos sino también con monos vervet en gran número, que se han  convertido en expertos en robar comida, incluyendo algo de la nuestra; De Hoop camping en Richtersveld fue, al contrario de lo que habíamos visto en un foro, limpio y cómodo, muy bien situado en las orillas del río. Un gran lugar para relajarse y disfrutar la tranquilidad del desierto en frente del agua fluyendo, con el brillo del cielo nocturno más tarde.

On our last night we camped at Sendelingsdrif again, leaving the following morning to cross the Orange River on the cable ferry, to arrive in Namibia.

En nuestra última noche acampamos en Sendelingsdrif nuevamente, salimos en la mañana siguiente y cruzos el río Orange en el ferry de cable, para llegar a Namibia.

Cape Town un delicia interminable / Cape Town an endless delight En/Es

Escribir sobre Cape Town es escribir sobre muchas fuentes de delicia y asombro. Entramos a la ciudad en un día caluroso, después de recorrer cientos de kilómetros de tierras, que por esta época están desnudas o apenas cubiertas con los muñones del cultivo anterior, que permanecen erguidos a pesar de su sequedad y que le imprimen al paisaje un tono amarillento que te seca el aliento, pero que deben estar cubiertas de un tejido verde y fructífero en primavera cuando las lluvias dejan que todo crezca.

Writing about Cape Town is to write about many sources of delight and surprise. We entered the city on a hot day, after having covered many hundreds of kilometres of farmland, which at this time of year are bare or covered only with the stubble of the last season's crops, which remained erect despite the dryness, giving a yellow tone to the scenery, taking the breath away, but which must be covered in a green and fruitful fabric when the rains create new growth.

La ruta se puso más lenta al entrar a la cuidad, porque eso de llegar en la hora pico no fue muy inteligente, pero poder aproximarnos lentamente a diferentes perspectivas de Table Mountain ocupó toda nuestra atención. Table mountain es un punto de referencia indispensable en esta ciudad y su área metropolitana, dado que es el telón de fondo de la misma, pero también por su riqueza paisajística y natural. Sin embargo,  es toda la península una colección de riqueza, porque la cadena montañosa que la atraviesa, junto con los océanos Atlántico al Occidente y el índigo al este, crean una conjunto de imágenes y formas preciosas a la vista y a todos los sentidos.

The route slowed on our entering the city, because arriving at rush hour had not been too smart, however progressively viewing Table Mountain from different perspectives occupied our attention. Table Mountain Is an indispensable reference point in this city and conurbation, given that it is the backdrop for these, and also its scenic and natural richness. Even so, the entire peninsula is a collection of riches, since the mountain chain along the peninsula, between the Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, provides a diversity of precious images and forms to the scenery and to all of the senses.

Visitar la colonia de pingüinos africanos fue enriquecedor, no sólo por ser una especie diferente, sino porque pudimos apreciar individuos en diferentes momentos de su maduración, desde los menores de 30 días hasta los adultos, y observarlos junto con cientos de seres humanos haciendo hasta lo imposible por tomarse una selfie con los pingüinos es un espectáculo en otra dimensión.



Visiting the African Penguin colony was enriching, not only since this is a distinct species, but also because we could appreciate individuals in different stages of maturation, from young of 30 days old to adults, and watching them with hundreds of human beings doing the possible in their attempts to take selfies with the penguins is a spectacle in another dimension.

Llendo más al sur, exploramos Cape Point, el punto más sur-oriental de la península con acantilados inmensos, que dejan apreciar la fuerza de los elementos. Usamos el cable para llegar al punto más alto y nuevamente el turismo antropológico asociado con el comportamiento de los visitantes del todo el mundo resulta una fuente de entretenimiento cuando tienes varios minutos de espera: desde los que hace la fila en un silencio estoico, pasando por los que quieren hacer la fila pero comer al mismo tiempo en el restaurante adyacente y siempre encuentran ese miembro del clan dispuesto a hacer las veces de Zuricato para avisarles del movimiento de la fila, el progreso, el riesgo y pararse en la punta más visible de la línea para mover su mano con desesperación y ansiedad, esperando que con su esfuerzo la deglución de los otros sea más rápida, hasta los grupos de Chinos hablando a todo pulmón, ocupando toda la atmósfera con sus voces estridentes.

Heading further south, we explored Cape Point, the furthest south-western point of the peninsula, with cliffs giving a sense of the power of the elements. We used the cableway  to ascend to the topmost point and once again anthropological tourism associated with the behaviour of the visitors from all over the world provided a source of entertainment during our waiting to board, from those who waited in stoic silence, to those who wanted to be in the queue but also to eat in the adjacent restaurant and who delegated a member of the clan to hold their places, bobbing up in suricat fashion every few moments to maintain visual contact, all the while in growing desperation and anxiety that the other clan members would hurry up and break away early enough to join the queue, to the group of Chinese conversing stridently at full lung power, occupying the entire auditory space.







Después visitamos el Cabo de la Buena Esperanza, presente en mis células desde las lecciones más tempranas de geografía, allí las olas del Atlántico danzaron con toda su fuerza, como las mejores danzas tradicionales, y el viento, además de despelucarnos o peinarnos (con este pelero ya no sé que es lo hace el viento), crea una nubecilla de agua nebulizada que embellece el atardecer.

Then we visited the Cape of Good Hope, present in our brains from the earliest geography lessons where the Atlantic waves danced in full force, like the best traditional dances, and the wind, in addition to tousling us or combing our hair (with Marce's hair it was not clear which), created a cloud of water droplets which embellished the sunset.






Luego de nuevo hacia el norte por la costa oeste, recorrimos la ruta escénica por el acantilado occidental disfrutando el paisaje y el silencio propio de los últimos rayos de luz dejando el territorio. Eso nos permitió disfrutar la cena en un poblado costero con comida de mar fresca.

Later north again via the west coast, we took the scenic route via the cliff road, enjoying the scenery and the silence as the last rays of sun disappeared. This also allowed us to enjoy a dinner in a coastal town with fresh sea food.

Dos días después terminamos la exploración de Table Mountain y los puntos escénicos asociados. Caminar en esta meseta nos dio la oportunidad reconocer la vegetación local y seguir llenando nuestra experiencia con escenas nuevas y refrescantes de la península hacia el sur, la ciudad y el océano, además de apreciar el comportamiento curioso y cauteloso de los Dassies. Como toda atracción turística, el cable de ascenso y descenso, también es posible caminar pero la ruta es realmente desafiante, está lleno de gente esperando su turno. Es altamente recomendable comprar las entradas por internet, esto reduce la fila de 2 horas a 45 minutos, sin contar el tiempo invertido buscando un espacio para estacionar el carro. Explorar Signal Hill, la montaña más al norte, es muy valioso no sólo porque permite ver Table Mountain en las instalaciones urbanas e industriales, que se atraviesas en la escena desde otros lugares de la ciudadana, sino apreciar el atardecer y las persona disfrutando la riqueza natural, grupos de jóvenes cantando, deslizándose por la montaña en los estuches de las guitarras, grupos disfrutando juegos de mesas, enamorados besándose y fotografiando el amor con la luz del atardecer y turistas saltando dentro de un marco construido para registrar la vista a Table Mountain, son imágenes imperdibles del lugar.

Two days later we completed our exploration of Table Mountain and its associated scenic spots. Walking at the mesa top allowed us to learn more about the local vegetation and continue to fill our experience with new and refreshing scenes of the peninsula to the south, the city and the ocean, in addition to learning more of the cautious behaviour of the dassies. Like every tourist attraction, the queue for the cableway up and down (it's possible to walk however this is challenging) is full of people waiting their turns. It's highly recommended to buy tickets online, which reduces the queue from 2 hours to 45 minutes, not counting the time taken to find a parking spot. Exploring Signal Hill, further north, is well worth while since it gives an opportunity for excellent views of Table Mountain without the other urban and industrial scenery, which intrudes on the view from most other viewpoints, but also to enjoy the sunset, and other groups of people also enjoying the setting; young people singing and sledging on guitar cases, groups playing board games, couples kissing and taking photos of their love in the sunset, and tourists jumping inside a frame constructed to provide a border for photos of the scene, all are unmissable.

El distrito seis, un lugar recuperado para rendir homenaje a las personas desplazadas por las "des-medidas" del Apartheid, que nos permitió entender un poco más este fenómeno y las formas de su impacto.

District 6, a place recovered to give homage to the people of this area displaced by the actions of apartheid, which allowed us to understand a little more of this phenomenon and the forms of its impact.

Bo-kaap street

La zona más musulmana, concentrada en Bo-kaap, un area de la ciudad con calles empedradas y casas de colores, bellamente conservadas, que además de alegrar los sentidos, congrega a múltiples personas que tratan de lograr la mejor fotos de sí mismo y de otros en la belleza provista por el color y La Luz.

The area most Muslim, concentrated in Bo-Kaap, an area with cobbled streets and colourful houses beautifully conserved, in addition to bringing joy to the senses, brought out many people who sought to take the best photos of themselves and others on the beauty provided by the colour and the light.

El Centro de la ciudad, con edificios icónicos, galerías de arte y díseño, mercados de artesanías y The Company's Garden con varios de los museos de Iziko South Africa Museum, los días festivos de Semana Santa redujeron el tiempo disponible para visitar museos, sin embargo pudimos disfrutar the South Africa National Galleries, ellos tenían una exhibición temporal sobre el arte-artesanía hecha por mujeres, que fue de todo nuestro gusto, nos solo por el disfrute que representa la manifestación estética de cada obra, sino por el valor de apreciar la transformación de materiales cotidianos en arte y el proceso innovador implicado en cada puesta en escena.

The centre of the city, with iconic buildings, art and design galleries, artesan markets, and the Company's Garden with various Iziko museums; the easter week hours reduced the time available to visit the museums, however we were able to enjoy the South African National Gallery, which had a temporary exhibition of art and craft by women, which was all to our taste, not only for the enjoyment of the æsthetic manifestation of each work, but also for the value of appreciating the transforming of day-to-day materials into art, and the innovative process implied in each mise en scene.

The observatory, un suburbio en Cape Town al que llegamos por nuestra búsqueda incansable de textiles, resultó una deliciosa sorpresa, una zona impregnada de la delicia de los entornos universitarios con cafés que invitan a lo lento, y en donde finalmente encontramos ShweShwe, un textil de algodón impreso con hermosos diseños, muy importante en la vida cotidiana Surafricana.

The Observatory, a suburb of Cape Town which we found in our insatiable search for textiles, was a delicious surprise, a suburb filled with the delight of university settings, with cafés which invite one to dally, and where we finally encountered shweshwe, a cotton fabric printed with beautiful designs; very important in South African daily life.

Woodstock una antigua zona industrial, se ha posicionado como una área de diseño y arte que aloja The Old Biscuit Mill, un lugar de integración de diseño, arte y artesanía, lleno de nuevas ideas, creatividad y expresiones funcionales y hermosas, lo visitamos un sábado y entonces tuvimos la suerte de disfrutar el mercado de comidas, con múltiples opciones, música en vivo y un ambiente general de disfrute altamente contagioso.

Woodstock, an old industrial zone, which has positioned itself as an area of design and art, where we found the Old Biscuit Mill, a place integrating design, art, and craft, full of new ideas, creativity, and functional and beautiful expressions. We visited on a Saturday, and were this lucky to find the food market, with lots of choices, live music, and a generally highly contagious atmosphere of enjoyment.



Kirstenbosch, un extenso y rico jardín, con un entorno maravilloso que brinda la oportunidad de aprender sobre la flora de esta biozona y lleno de nuevas texturas, formas y mecanismo, antes no reconocidos y donde encontramos, con sorpresa, miembros de nuestra familia: Indira, Max, Victoria, y Gaby, que visitaba Ciudad del Cabo de vacaciones desde Uganda. Así pudimos disfrutar una cena con ellos más tarde en el Waterfront, y ponernos al día con sus noticias, gracias por el encuentro, por la deliciosa cena y por el encuentro del alma.

Kirstenbosch: an extensive and rich garden, with a wonderful environment providing an opportunity to learn about the flora of this biozone, and where we chanced, to our surprise, to meet family: Indira, Max, Victoria, and Gaby, who were visiting Capetown on holiday from Uganda. We were thus able to enjoy dinner with them later at the Waterfront, and catch up on their news.



El Waterfront y el muelle de Victoria y Alfred, que es una zona de muelle renacentista del puerto, con un centro comercial, restaurantes, cafés, y The Workshop, con una amplia gama de arte y artesanía, incluyendo muchos elementos distintivos e innovadores.

The Waterfront and the Victoria and Alfred dock, which is a reborn dock area of the port, boasting a shopping centre, restaurants, cafés, and the Workshop, with a wide range of art and craft, including many distinctive and innovative items.

Si hubiésemos dedicado mas tiempo a esta ciudad, tendríamos más y más historias nuevas, pero llego la hora de partir y nos fuimos.

If we had had more time dedicated to the city, we would have more and more new stories, however it was time to leave and we left.

The Garden Route, a discovery at every step / La Ruta del Jardín, un descubrimiento en cada paso EN/ES

The garden route was a great surprise for us, when we were planning our visit it was difficult to understand how this park was set up and how it operated. But when we arrived, everything became clear. This is a region close to the sea, in which it has been possible to integrate three national natural parks and other areas under provincial control and private ownership, to create a protected area of the existing ecosystem, with a lot of options for activities and enjoyment.

La Ruta del Jardín, fue una gran sorpresa para nosotros, cuando estábamos planeando nuestra visita, fue difícil entender cómo era el parque y cómo operaba, pero una vez llegamos todo fue claro. Esta es región cercana al mar, en donde ha sido posible integral tres parques naturales nacionales, con otras área bajo control provincial y propietarios privados, para crear un área protegida de los ecosistemas existentes, con muchas opciones de actividades y entretenimiento. 


The first section from the east is demarcated for the Tsitsikamma mountains, which create incredible gorges for the rivers going down to the sea; even though timber production continues at present in this area, it's possible to appreciate the indigenous forest around the area.

La primera sección desde el este está demarcada por las montañas Tsitsikamma, que crean incredibles cañones para la salida al mar de cada río; a pesar de continuar viendo cultivos de maderables y los consecuentes lotes talados, es possible appreciation también los "Bosques indigenas" alrededor del área.

The second section is the Knysna lake area, which is a scenic route around the lakes surrounded by forests and mountains. The design of the route, with a lot of undulations, vertically and horizontally, allows the visitor to glide through the richness of the views through the systems of lagoons; it is one of these routes that bicycle-lovers could appreciate. In addition, the art galleries in the town, with good options for restaurants, make the experience exceptional. From the sea to the north it's possible to explore the forest, and the local community has developed an amazing capacity to do that in multiple ways.

La segunda sección es el área de Lagos en Knysna, es una ruta escénica alrededor del lago, rodeada por bosques y montañas. El diseño de la ruta con muchas ondulaciones, verticales y horizontales, dejan que el visitante se deslice por la riqueza del paisaje a través del sistema de Laguna, este es uno de esos sitios que los amantes de los motos pueden apreciar. Adicionalmente, las galerías de arte en el pueblo, junto con las buenas opciones de restaurantes, have also experiencia excepcional. Desde el mar hacia el Norte is posible explorar el bosque y para ello las comunidades locales han desarrollado capacidades impresionantes para hacerlo de múltiples maneras.

Knysna Turaco

The third section close to George, is the Wilderness National Park, an area established around the  Touwsrivier rivermouth, with ways to explore by walking or bicycle, in which it's possible to see a special bird, the Knysna Turaco. It is a green and blue bird, with a perfect capacity to  camouflage itself in this environment; it moves very quickly when feeding in the trees and sometimes looks like another branch; when it flies, its beautiful red wings are visible, and again the bird disappears in the next tree.

La tercera sección cerca de George, es Wilderness National Park, un área establecida alrededor de la desembocadura del río Touws, con muchas ruts ara explorar caminando, o en bicicleta, en donde es posible observar un pájaro especial: el Turaco de knysna. Este es un pájaro con plumaje verde y azul, con una perfecta capacidad para camuflarse en este entorno, ellos se mueven rápido cuando está comiendo en los árboles y algunas veces parecen simplemente otra rama más, cuando ellos vuelan un bello plumaje rojo en las alas se hace visible y de nuevo el pájaro desaparece en el próximo árbol.

During the afternoon in the campsite it was possible to enjoy the happiness and energy of the children, a group of 20 of different families and ages, but all of them honouring the good practice of going barefoot, very common in South Africa, creating a great dynamic, with checkpoints for the cars, asking for driving licences, but completely capable of accepting that a driver from Mars doesn't need one; with the sunset, they disappear and a deep silence takes place progressively and the wind and some raindrops make the music for the night.

Durante la tarde en el campamento, fue posible disfrutar la alegría y energía de los niños, un grupo de 20 de diferentes familias y edades, pero todos ellos honrando la buena práctica de caminar descalzos, muy común en Sur Africa, con controles en la vía, preguntando por la licencia para conducir, y completamente capaces de aceptar que los conductores provenientes de Marte no necesitan de una; con el atardecer, ellos desaparecieron y un silencio profundo se apoderó del lugar progresivamente, así el viento y algunas gotas de agua hicieron la música en la noche.

Crossing Franschhoek Pass

The next day we drove to Franschhoek; when we were crossing the mountains, we could appreciate the special vegetation associated with the Capensis floral kingdom; the landscape with vineyards, the rocky mountains around, and the light of the afternoon provoked a sense of calm that slowed down our minds. Going slowly is the appropriate manner to explore this area, it's indispensable to take the time to walk, to visit the wineries, to explore the art galleries and the special stores, and to visit some of the museums - the car museum was very impressive - and finally to enjoy the gastronomic offer available. Our time in these places was an oasis of experiences in several senses.

El siguiente día manejamos hacia Franschhoek,  cuando estábamos cruzando las montañas, podemos apreciar la vegetación especial del reino floral Capensis, el paisaje con los viñedos, le montaña rocosas y la Liz de la tarde provocaron una sensación de calma, que lentificaron nuestra mente. Ir despacio es la forma apropiada de explorar el área, es indispensable tener tiempo para caminar, visitar los viñedos, explotara las galerías de arte y las tiendas especiales, visitar algunos museos -el de los carros fue muy impresionante- y finalmente disfrutar de la oferta gastronómica disponible -que fue exquisita-. Nuestro tiempo en este sitio fue un oasis, en varios sentidos.

Red Hartebeest

This post is written bearing in mind the risk that a blog describing a trip through Africa typically ends up including posts about visits to game reserves which are simply lists of animals seen... In seeking to avoid this, this post will, it's hoped, give some insight into our visit to the Addo Elephant National Park by focussing on what was distinctive, at least for us. 

Este post se escribe teniendo en cuenta el riesgo de que un blog que describe un viaje a través de África por lo general termina incluyendo mensajes sobre las visitas a las reservas de caza que son simplemente listas de animales vistos ... En la búsqueda de evitar esto,  y dar una idea de nuestra visita al Addo Elephant National Park nos centrándose en lo que era distintivo, al menos para nosotros.

We saw many animals which we had seen elsewhere, however saw subtle differences in colouring in familiar species, warthogs for example were a darker shade of brown. The Addo elephants, for whom the park is named, are a more reddish tone than others we had seen; in fact they were at one time considered a sub-species of loxodonta africana, however are not now. We were fortunate to see many if these, including large groups of up to fifty or so, and small family groups, with young elephants ranging down to very young babies. 

Vimos muchos animales que habíamos visto en otras partes, sin embargo notamos diferencias sutiles en el color en especies familares como los "warthog" por ejemplo,  su tono era más oscuro. Los elefantes Addo, que le dan el nombre al parque, tienen un tono más rojizo que otros que habíamos visto; de hecho, en un momento se consideraron una subespecie de loxodonta africana, sin embargo no lo son ahora. Tuvimos la suerte de ver muchos de estos, incluyendo grupos grandes hasta cincuenta, y pequeños grupos familiares, con elefantes jóvenes que van desde los bebés.

We saw Red Hartebeest for the first time; also Blue Crane and Denham's Bustard, Cape Bulbul, and the beautiful Greater Double-collared Sunbird.

Vimos Red Hartebeest por primera vez; también Blue Crane y Denham's Bustard, Cape Bulbul, y el hermoso Greater Double-collared Sunbird.

The park was much more busy than others we had visited: with many tourists, including a number who expressed interest in our travels; and with dung beetles, in large numbers, rolling their dung balls across the roads (presumably elsewhere too, less visibly). These latter are so common  that there are notices prominently displayed warning drivers to avoid  them. 

El parque estaba mucho más ocupado que otros que habíamos visitado: con turistas, incluyendo varios que expresaron interés en nuestros viajes; y con escarabajos de estiércol, en gran número, haciendo rodar sus pelotas de estiércol a través de las carreteras (presumiblemente en otras partes también, menos visiblemente). Estos últimos son tan comunes que hay avisos prominentemente  para dar advertencia a los conductores que los escarabajos tienen prelación en la vía.

We had been unable to book accommodation in the park, and stayed  at a hotel/caravan park/camp site not too far away, the first night in one of the rooms, and the second in the campsite. We then headed west to explore the "Garden Route" along the coast.

No pudimos reservar alojamiento en el parque, y nos alojamos en un hotel / parque de caravanas / camping no demasiado lejos, la primera noche en una de las habitaciones, y la segunda en el camping. Luego nos dirigimos hacia el oeste para explorar "Garden Route" a lo largo de la costa.

The mountains around Lesotho / Las montańas alrededor de Lesotho

Going south we spent several hours travelling through grass and small white and pink cosmos flowers in the opens lands of Free State, even though the landscape was very similar the all time, the presence of these flowers made the route enchanting. 

Hacia el sur pasamos varias horas alrededor de un paisaje de pasto y pequeñas flores cosmos blancas y rosadas en las tierras amplias de Free State, aunque el paisaje fue ser muy similar todo el tiempo, las presencias de esas flores hizo ruta encantadora.

We arrived at Clarence, a small town in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, a place dedicated to tourism, with a lot of options for outdoor activities and a big range of accommodation; we wandered around to enjoy the local offers, a good coffee and the textiles of Mungo, and we met again the Indian family with whom we had been chatting in Kruger. 

Llegamos a Clarence, una pequeña ciudad en las estribaciones de las montañas de Maluti, un lugar dedicado al turismo, con un montón de opciones para actividades al aire libre y una amplia gama de alojamiento, caminamos alrededor para disfrutar de las ofertas locales, un buen café y los textiles de Mungo y nos encontramos otra vez con la familia india con la cual estuvimos charlando en Kruger.

The route near the mountains took us to the Golden Gate National Park, a beautiful area with walking trails which we enjoyed immediately, touring the mountain in the late afternoon was quiet, we were able to see some birds and enjoy the scenery with Warm afternoon light.

La ruta cercana a las montañas nos llevó al Parque Nacional de las Tierras Altas Golden Gate, una hermosa zona con senderos para  para caminar que disfrutamos inmediatamente, recorrer la montaña al final de la tarde fue tranquilo, pudimos ver algunos pájaros y disfrutar del paisaje con la luz tibia de la tarde.

That night Alan prepared a braai, not only was it useful to prepare our meal, it was a source of temperature to enjoy a little more time out of the car. Our evening was comfortable and we enjoyed the cool atmosphere.

Esa noche Alan preparó el braai, no sólo fue útil para preparar nuestra comida, fue una fuente de temperatura para disfrutar un poco más el tiempo fuera del coche. Nuestra noche fue comfortable y disfrutamos del ambiente fresco.

 


The next day we explored more of the park and discovered the black wildebeest, with much hair around the head, also with more frontal horns and white tail. The surrounding landscape increased our desire to see Drakensberg further south, and make the route to Sani Pass, described as a magnificent route to enjoy the view and ride in 4x4.

Al día siguiente exploramos más del parque y descubrimos el wildebeest negro, con mucho pelo alrededor de la cabeza, también con cuernos más frontales y la cola blanca. El paisaje alrededor incrementó nuestro deseo de ver Drakensberg mas al sur, y hacer la ruta a Sani Pass, descrita como una ruta magnífica para disfrutar la vista y el paseo en 4x4.

After our visit to Durban we were ready to enjoy the mountains, we planned to sleep in a Nature Reserve at the base of the starting point of the route, with the intention of seeing the mountains early in the morning. We arrived after the park was closed, but after a call it was possible to enter and use the camp. The night was clear, we did not have wood for the braai, so we explored the site around and found not only enough wood, but also some coal from other visitors. With all the material available, Alan made the fire and we prepared our dinner. During dinner, lightning and thunder began, this area is recognised by the frequency of these phenomena. The show was amazing, but the frequency and closeness increased, so we decided to pack up and prepare our bed. We had enough time to get in the car, and then the heavy rain began to complete the scene. During the night, Alan slept deliciously, Marce woke up a few times to check the distance of the storm, but every time went back to sleep again.

Después de nuestra visita a Durban estábamos listos para disfrutar de las montañas, planeamos dormir en una Reserva Natural en la base del punto de partida de la ruta, con la intención de ver las montañas temprano en la mañana. Llegamos después de que el parque estaba cerrado, pero luego de una llamada, fue posible entrar y usar el campamento. La noche estaba clara, no teníamos madera para el braai, así que explorar el sitio alrededor y encontramos no sólo madera suficiente, sino también un poco de carbón de otros visitantes, con todo el material disponible, Alan hizo el fuego y preparamos nuestra cena. Durante la cena, los relámpagos y los truenos comenzaron, esta área es reconocida por la frecuencia de estos fenómenos. El espectáculo fue increíble, pero la frecuencia y la cercanía aumentaron, así que decidimos recoger todo y preparar la cama. Tuvimos tiempo suficiente para entrar en el coche, y la fuerte lluvia comenzó para completar la escena. Durante la noche, Alan durmió deliciosamente, yo me desperté algunas veces para comprobar la distancia de la tormenta, pero cada vez volví a dormir de nuevo.

The next day the rain continued, and the visibility was not more than 10 m, so our Sani Pass plan was impossible and we had to continue our route without the glorious views of Drakensberg - perhaps next time.

After a hot breakfast with new flavours in the nearest town, and visiting a place of weavers, we left the area in a southerly direction. The rain and fog were our company during the day, in addition to a very limited road, with small populations, many speed limits, wet animals on the road, bumps and several areas under repair, we finally arrived at our new campsite, near East London at 7:00 pm, after a long day of driving, the only restaurant in the area was closed. The camp owner was waiting for us. An elderly man emerged from a small house, with a light and a shower mat, at the age of 96 he continues to manage the place, while he makes low-voiced jokes about age and pain in the knees. With that example, we prepared our food with enthusiasm and enjoyed it under the small roof of the bathrooms.

Al día siguiente la lluvia continuó, y la visibilidad no era superior a 10 metros, por lo que nuestro plan de Sani Pass fue imposible y tuvimos que continuar nuestra ruta sin las gloriosas vistas de Drakensberg, quizás la próxima vez.

Después de un desayuno caliente con nuevo sabores, en la ciudad más cercana, y de visitar un lugar de tejedores, dejamos la zona en dirección suroeste. La lluvia y ls niebla, fueron nuestra compañía durante el día, además de una carretera muy limitada, con pequeñas poblaciones, muchos límites de velocidad, animales húmedos en el camino, baches y varias zonas con reparaciones. Finalmente llegamos al nuevo campamento, cerca de East London a las 7:00 pm, después de un largo día conduciendo, el único restaurante en la zona estaba cerrado, el dueño del campamento estaba esperándonos. Un hombre anciano emergió de una casa pequeña, con una luz y un tapete de ducha, con 96 años, él continúa manejando el lugar, mientras hace bromas en voz baja sobre la edad y el dolor en las rodillas. Con ese ejemplo, preparamos nuestra comida con entusiasmo y la disfrutamos bajo el pequeño techo de los baños.
