Ford Portal: a point of many encounters / Un punto de muchos encuentros

It was in our plans to track chimps again, in order to have a better opportunity to appreciate them in the wild in larger numbers; Kibale National Park was the best destination to do this and it was a great coincidence to do this on Marce's Birthday.

Estaba en nuestros planes hacer de nuevo un seguimiento de los chimpancés, a fin de tener una mejor oportunidad de apreciarlos en mayor número en estado salvaje. El parque nacional kibale era el mejor destino para hacer este seguimiento y fue una gran coincidencia hacerlo en mi cumpleaños.

We left Fort Portal in a south-easterly direction, and after a relatively short time through beautiful forest we arrived at the main offices to start the tracking. Once we started walking, very soon we saw two chimps; we stopped to watch them but our guide continued walking, and said "we are looking for the biggest group", 5 minutes later we were surrounded by a big group. They were resting at that moment, some of them sitting and looking around, others lying down, and others eating small pieces of fruit.

Salimos de Fort Portal en dirección sureste, después de un tiempo relativamente corto y entre hermoso bosque llegamos a las oficinas principales para iniciar el seguimiento. Cuando empezamos a caminar, muy pronto vimos a dos chimpancés, nos detuvimos pero nuestro guía continuó caminando, y dijo que estábamos buscando el grupo más grande, 5 minutos más tarde estábamos rodeados por un grupo grande. Estaban descansando en ese momento, algunos de ellos sentados y mirando al rededor, otros acostados y otros comiendo pequeños trozos de frutas.


After a while they started to move and we simply walked beside them through the forest; again in a new setting they continued their activities: eating, resting, and grooming. In this group we saw chimps of different ages and we could appreciate different behaviours, we spent two hours with them and one additional hour walking and exploring the forest.







Después de un rato comenzaron a moverse y simplemente caminamos junto a ellos a través del bosque, otra vez en un nuevo escenario continuaron con sus actividades: comer, descansar y acicalarse mutuamente. En este grupo vimos chimpances en diferentes edades y pudimos apreciar comportamientos diferentes, estuvimos dos horas con ellos e hicimos una caminata adicional de una hora para explorar el bosque.


One interesting element of the Ugandan culture is the presence of Kingdoms, they have been around for centuries; even though they were abolished after independence in order to create a unified government, their cultural power was recognised and re-established in the new constitution in 1995. We had the opportunity to explore some of the traditions of the Tooro Kingdom which covers part of the southwest of Uganda. We enjoyed the coffee tradition, as a gift and also as a demonstration of welcome; as well  pink peanut sauce with matoke - mashed green plantain, spinach and bean leaves, and always well received: bean soup.

Un elemento interesante de la cultura ugandesa es la presencia de reinos, que han existido durante siglos, aúnque fueron abolidos después de la independencia con el fin de crear un gobierno unificado, su poder cultural fue reconocido y se restablecieron en la nueva constitución de 1995. Tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar algunas de la tradición del Reino Tooro que cubre parte del suroeste de Uganda. Disfrutamos de la tradición del café como un regalo y también como una demostración de bienvenida. La salsa de maní rosado con matoke - puré de plátano verde, hojas de espinacas y fríjoles, y la siempre bien recibida: sopa de fríjoles.

In our visit to the Tooro Cultural Center, a small place created by a senior guide in the national park and his son, in order to preserve Tooro traditions, we learned about traditional methods for hunting and fishing, local dances,  the tools used in day to day life, and we finished our visit with a shot of banana gin, a very strong distilled spirit, with a delicate, sweet flavour at the finish.

En nuestra visita al Centro Cultural Tooro -un lugar pequeño creado por un guía seniór del parque nacional y su hijo, para preservar las tradiciones Tooro- aprendimos sobre los métodos tradicionales de caza y pesca, las danzas locales y las herramientas utilizadas en el día a día, terminamos nuestra visita con un trago de ginebra de plátano, una destilado muy fuerte con un delicados sabor dulce al final.

North of Ford Portal, we spent the night in a lodge at Lake Nyaninga, an impressive crater lake with much beauty all around; a place to enjoy the wind's waking us up, to celebrate and start a new year.

Al norte de Ford Portal, pasamos la noche en el Lago Nyaninga, un lago en un cráter, impresionante por la belleza  a su alrededor, un lugar para disfrutar ser despeinandos por el viento, para celebrar y comenzar un nuevo año.

Our visit to Ford Portal was complete with the rich experience in Rwenzori View Guesthouse, a place to meet others, to share experiences, and to learn at the delicious table of the place, every moment shared there was full of value and wealth.

El tiempo en Ford Portal se completó con la rica experiencia en Rwerzori View Guesthouse, un lugar para encontrarse con otros, compartir experiencias y aprender en la deliciosa mesa del lugar, cada instante allí compartido estuvo lleno de valor y riqueza.
