Lake Kivu: a relaxing break/ descanso

We left Nyungwe and made our way to Lake Kivu; not far, in fact visible from Uwinka on a clear day. The road winds laterally and horizontally above the lake, which seemed odd since in most places in the world roads tend to follow the shoreline, however this road links communities in the hills above the lake. We spent a night at Kibuye, at Cormoran Lodge, overlooking the bays on the eastern shore. We did nothing but relax and enjoy the setting, needing a break after a strenuous couple of days.

Salimos de Nyungwe y fuimos al Lago Kivu: no lejos, de hecho visible desde Uwinka cuando el día claro. La ruta lago arriba es sinuosa, vertical y horizontalmente, lo que es curioso porque en la mayoría de casos estas ruta siguen la orilla del lago, pero esta ruta conecta comunidades en las colinas altas. Nos quedamos un anoche en Kibuye, en Cormoran Lodge, con vista de las bahías del oriente del Lago. No hicimos más que relajarnos y conversar después de unos días exigentes.

From Kibuye we continued north, finally dropping down to the town of Rubavu (previously Gisenye), which is a centre for relaxation, particularly before or after gorilla trekking, and also a gateway town into D.R.Congo. Here we enlisted the services of Innocent, a local expert in tourism, who was able to set us up with Gorilla permits for Volcanoes National Park. To pick up the permits we went to his office in front of the lake, where we met Frederick, a victim of the violence in the 1990s in Rwanda. We spent an afternoon in conversation, amazed at how readily Frederick talked about his experience, in which his hands were chopped off when he refused to kill others on the 'bus in which he was travelling as a teenager. His capacity to create a positive life for himself was inspiring, and the way in which he spoke about living near one of those who had inflicted this upon him, accepting this person's appalling acts in the interest of moving on with his life, was a revelation.

De Kibuye seguimos al norte, finalmente bajando a la ciudad de Rubavu (antes Gisenye) que es un centro de descanso, particularmente antes o después de "trekking" por gorilas, también una puerta por R.D.Congo. Aquí contratamos los servicios de Innocent, experto local en turismo, quién gestionó nuestros permisos para seguir los gorilas en el Parque Nacional de los Volcanes. Para recoger los permisos fuimos a su oficina al frente del Lago, donde conocimos Frederick, víctima de la violencia de los 1990s en Rwanda. Tuvimos una tarde en conversación, admirados por su capacidad de hablar fácilmente sobre su experiencia: sus manos fueron mutiladas, cuando rechazó el pedido de matar a las personas con quiénes viajaba en bus cuando joven. Su capacidad de crear una vida positiva fue una inspiración, el hablar y ser escuchado por otros ha sido el camino que le ha permitido el perdón y la manera en que habló sobre su experiencia de vivir cerca de quien había participado esta atrocidad, con aceptación de sus actos, y mantenerse sensible a su humanidad para seguir con su vida, fue una revelación.

P.S. we noticed that there was some kind of structure in Lake Kivu, and when we asked what it was, learned that it is a methane extraction project. This is innovative and provides electricity locally, and also mitigates an unusual risk in the lake, which is the production of large quantities of methane, trapped in the lower layers of the lake water. If this methane breaks through to surface (an "overturn" or limnic eruption) the results would be catastrophic. When this happened in Cameroon's Lake Nyos in 1986 1700 people died of asphyxiation. This extraction project is unique at present.

P.D. Notamos alguna estructura en el Lago Kivu, y cuando preguntamos qué fue, aprendimos que es un proyecto de extracción de metano. Innovador y fuente de electricidad local, también un mecanismo para mitigar el riesgo inusual en el Lago, que es la producción de cantidades grandes de metano en las aguas, atrapadas en las profundidades. Si este metano sale del Lago a la superficie (una "inversión" o erupción línica), el nivel de destrucción puede ser inmenso.
