Crossing the heart of Rwanda / cruzando el corazón de Rwanda: Kigali, Nyanza, Huye, Murambi

From Akagera we headed west to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Kigali was a surprise - a beautiful city, set in green hills, with a really positive ambience which led us almost immediately to feel that this is a city where we could spend a couple of years rather than a couple of days. This was the first capital since Windhoek which gave us the positive sense of being a really liveable city.



Desde Akagera salimos al occidente hacia Kigali, capital de Rwanda. Kigali fue una sorpresa - una ciudad linda, entre colinas verdes, con un ambiente muy positivo que nos di el sentido de  ser una ciudad en que podemos vivir un par de años en lugar de días. Esta fue la primera capital, después de Windhoek, que nos dió el sentido de ser realmente "vivible".

Our first task was to go to Toyota for a couple of tasks, for neither of which they had the necessary spares, so we continued to Bandag to put the two new spare tyres on the car, relegating the two most worn tyres (although still with lots of Km left) to our spares. Bhanji Mohamed was a true gentleman, and stayed with us while his capable team took care of the task.

Nuestra primera tarea fue ir a Toyota por unos asuntos, sin embargo ellos no tuvieron las repuestas que necesitamos, entonces fuimos a Bandag para cambiar las llantas de repuesto por los montados en el eje trasero, poniendo estas como repuesto (aún con muchos Km de vida). Bhanji Mohamed fue un caballero de verdad, y se quedó con nosotros todo el tiempo, mientras su equipo hizo el trabajo.

We visited Azizi Life Boutique, Niro Arts Gallery, Caplaki Craft Village, Nyamiromba Cooperative, and the Go Kigali boutique, places to appreciate the beauty of the local crafts and their significance. In this exploration we came across the beautiful peace basket, used for keeping food and precious objects, also as gifts to friends and family when visiting, or to ask for the hand of one's  girlfriend and to hold the engagement ring. We enjoyed good food at Heaven and at Poivre Noir. We also had the pleasure of catching up with Luke, whom we had last seen in Nairobi, over coffee and ice-cream.

Visitamos Azizi Life Boutique, Niro Arts Gallery, Caplaki Craft Village, Nyamiromba Cooperative y la boutique de go Kigali, lugares para apreciar la belleza de la artesanía local y su significado. En esta exploración encontramos la canasta de La Paz, una hermosa cesta usada para guardar alimentos y objetos preciados, pero también para ofrendar a los amigos y familiares cuando son visitados, o para pedir la mano de la novia y guardar el anillo de compromiso. Disfrutando buena comida a Heaven y Poivre Noir. También tuvimos el placer de reunir con Luke, a quien habíamos visto la última vez en Nairobi, y actualizarnos sobre los planes de vida con café y helados.

Our admiration for the cleanliness of the country led us to understand one of the practices which build this reality: every last Saturday of the month everyone in Rwanda goes out to work for the community for three hours, following which an hour is dedicated to conversations on topics of interest, this being one of the practices focussed on maintaining the sense of unity.

Nuestra admiración por la limpieza del país, nos llevo a comprender una de las prácticas que construyen esta realidad, cada último sábado del mes, todos los miembros del país, salen a trabajar por su comunidad durante tres horas, para luego utilizar una hora para conversar sobre asuntos de interés, está es una de las prácticas implementadas para mantener el sentido de unidad.

In Kigali we visited the Genocide Memorial, a clear and direct exhibition which allowed us to understand not only what happened but also the phenomena which preceded and led to one of the most tragic acts of systematic extermination in recent times. A place to learn, at a more personal level and from direct testimony, the dangers of manipulation of information, of public disinformation, of division as a source of power, and of stigmatisation.  This visit was full of emotion and also of profound admiration for a society which rebuilt itself in unity and reconciliation.

En Kigali visitamos el Centro de memoria del genosidio, una exhibición clara y directa que nos  permitió comprender, más allá de los eventos ocurridos, los fenómenos que los presidieron y que construyeron una de las más tristes acciones de exterminio sistemático en los tiempos recientes. Un lugar para aprender, en un nivel más personal y desde el testimonio, el peligro de la manipulación de la información, de la comunicación pública, de la división como fuente de poder y de la estigmatizacion.  Esta visita estuvo llena de emociones y también de profunda admiración, por una sociedad que se construye a sí misma de nuevo en la unión y la reconciliación.

We left Kigali and headed southwest, initially to Muhanga, where we visited the home of Azizi Life, a cultural tourism proposal which allows one to know the common practices of rural life, and also serves as a platform for commercialization for basketwork products made by members of four cooperatives in the region. Then we continued to Nyanza, arriving early enough to be able to enjoy the National Art Gallery, which was very good. It was a pleasure to be guided by David (notwithstanding our preference for guiding ourselves), giving us a deeper insight into the works on display, as well as the history of the house, and the traditions of Rwanda.

Salimos de Kigali y fuimos hacia al suroeste, inicialmente a Muhango, donde visitamos el sede de Azizi Life, una propuesta de turismo cultural que permite conocer las prácticas más comunes de la vida rural, que adicionalmente, sirve de plataforma de comercialización de productos de cesteria hechos por cuatro cooperativas de la region. Luego continuamos a Nyanza, para disfrutar el Museo Nacional de Arte, la visita es guíada y  contrario a todas nuestra preferencias, fue un place contar con la compañía de David, que nos permitó un mayor entendimiento de los elementos en exhibición, también la historia de la casa, y las tradiciones de Rwanda.

We continued to Huye (previously Butare) where we stayed a night and in the morning visited the excellent Ethnographic Museum, guided by Lionel, who gave us an excellent appreciation of the history and culture of Rwanda; finally we understood the history of the Rwandan Kingdom, its traditions, and how these served to support the process of Justice, Unity, and Reconciliation of the country. Something which strikes us as (yet another) positive in Rwanda is that the national museums are not all in the capital, as is often the case, but are in various places around the country.

Seguimos a Huye (anterior Butare) donde nos quedamos una noche. En la mañana visitamos el excelente Museo Etnográfico, con el guía local Lionel, quien nos ofreció una owm excelente de la historia y cultura de Rwanda y por fin pudimos comprender la historia del reino anyarwansa y sus tradiciones y como estas han servido de soporte al proceso de justicia, perdón, union, y reconciliación del país. Algo que nos parece muy bien en Rwanda es el hecho que los museos nacionales no están en el capital, están en varios lugares en el país, creando un sentido muy positivo de descentralización.

From Huye we went west towards Nyungwe National Park, and on the way stopped at the Murambi Genocide Memorial. This memorial is a place for sober reflection on the tragic events of 1994; however also a place in which it's possible to gain some appreciation of the remarkable way in which the Rwandan people have created a society capable of moving on from these appalling events and in which justice, unity, and reconciliation are positively embedded in day to day life. It was very useful for us to witness the capacity of people to talk about this time in history, with profound respect for the experience they have lived, its significance, it's unacceptable character, and the practices to avoid that this could happen again in any part of the world; it was as if every time they talked it was a healing flower opening .


De Huye salimos al oeste en dirección al Parque Nacional Nyungwe, en ruta paramos en el Memorial de  Genocidio de Murambi. Este es un lugar para la reflexion sobria de los eventos trágicos de 1994; también un lugar donde fue posible ampliar nuestra  apreciación sobre la manera notable en que la gente de Rwanda han creado una sociedad capaz de avanzar de estos eventos y donde justicia, unidad, y reconciliación son positivamente parte de la vida cotidiana. Resultó muy útil para nosotros ser testigos de la capacidad de las personas, para hablar de esta parte de la historia, con profundo respeto por la experiencia vivida, su significado, su carácter no aceptable y sobre las prácticas para evitar que esto vuelva a suceder en cualquier lugar del mundo, fue como si cada vez que hablasen lo sano floreciera y se liberará.

We then continued to discover a more rural world, full of mountains, filling us with admiration and refreshing our senses.

Seguimos en camino para descubrir ese mundo más rural, lleno de montañas, llenando de admiración nuestro ser y de frescura nuestros sentidos.
