Windhoek, Grootland, and the Desert Elephants EN/ES

We had now almost caught up with our original plan, except for one night, and we chose to dispense with visiting the Twyfelfontein area, to be able to spend two nights in Windhoek.

Habíamos logrado casi cumplir con nuestro plan original, excepto por una noche, así que decidimos dejar nuestra visitar el área de Twyfelfontein, para poder pasar dos noches en Windhoek.

Windhoek proved to be an attractive city, relatively small in population, although this is not surprising given that Namibia’s population is only two million. It’s set among mountains, at a height of some 1700 m and hence cool by comparison with the low-lying deserts to the west. It struck us a very liveable: a place where we could enjoy spending some time, with a very positive ambiance. Although we had only one full day, we were able to visit the National Art Gallery, with an interesting exhibition on the architectural influences and developments in Namibia, among other displays; the Owela Museum, with a good exhibition of Namibian natural and cultural history, and a friendly and helpful staff, albeit the displays could be better curated. We also found a textile store with examples of material we had been unable to find previously, several “souvenirs for Africa” stores, which did not offer much of interest to us, and the Bougain Villas “village” with two stores offering excellent woven rugs and linen embroidery,where we were able to find beautiful products. We stayed at the excellent Monte Bello guest house, and ate well both evenings of our stay. 

Windhoek resultó ser una ciudad atractiva, relativamente pequeña en población, aunque esto no es sorprendente dado que la población de Namibia es sólo dos millones. Está situada entre las montañas, a una altura de unos 1700 m, por lo tanto es fresco en comparación con los desiertos bajos al oeste. Nos impresionó encontrar un lugar muy habitable: un lugar donde podíamos disfrutar pasar algún tiempo, con un ambiente muy positivo. Aunque tuvimos sólo un día completo, pudimos visitar la Galería Nacional de Arte, con una interesante exposición sobre las influencias arquitectónicas y los acontecimientos en Namibia, entre otras exposiciones; El Museo Owela, con una buena exposición de la historia natural y cultural de Namibia, y un personal amable y servicial, aunque las exhibiciones podrían estar mejor curadas. También encontramos una tienda de telas con ejemplos de un material que no habíamos podido encontrar previamente, varios tiendas de “souvenirs de África" ​ que no nos ofrecieron mucho interés, y el Bougain Villas  con dos tiendas que nos ofrecen excelentes alfombras tejidas yl bordado de lino, donde pudimos encontrar productos hermosos. Nos alojamos en el excelente Monte Bello casa de huéspedes, y comimos bien todos las noches de nuestra estancia.

We left Windhoek for a long journey to Grootberg Lodge. We had heard that the road to the lodge was very bad (corrugated) however found that this referred to the road via Khorixas, which we would have taken had we gone to Twyfelfontein, as originally planned. Having said this, we had no idea whether the road we would be taking would be any better. In fact most of the road was the main tarred road north, and was fine. We stopped at the Crocodile Ranch in Otjiwarongo, which proved to be an interesting place for a break, where it’s possible to learn about the crocodile business and to have lunch. The tarred road continued to Kamanjab and then turns north, whereas we continued west, for an further 125 Km, through the dry semi-desert of Damaraland, to Grootberg Pass, where the access road to Grootberg Lodge requires low-ratio four-wheel drive to ascend to the top of the plateau.

Dejamos Windhoek para hacer un largo viaje a Grootberg Lodge. Habíamos oído que el camino al Lodge estaba en  muy mal estado (corrugado) sin embargo nos encontramos que esto se refiere a la carretera a través de Khorixas, que habríamos tomado si nos habíamos ido a Twyfelfontein, como originalmente lo planeamos. Habiendo dicho esto, no teníamos ni idea si el camino que estaríamos tomando sería mejor. De hecho, la mayor parte del camino era la principal carretera asfaltada al norte, y estaba bien. Paramos en el rancho de cocodrilos en Otjiwarongo, que resultó ser un lugar interesante para un descanso, donde fue posible aprender sobre el negocio de cocodrilo y almorzar. El camino asfaltado siguió hasta Kamanjab, luego continuamos hacia el oeste, por otros 125 Km, a través del semi-desierto seco de Damaraland, hasta el paso de Grootberg, donde la carretera de acceso a Grootberg Lodge requiere tracción a las cuatro ruedas para ascender a la cima de la meseta.

We arrived after dark, and so the view from our room was revealed in the morning, the lodge cottages being set at the lip of the plateau, giving a stunning overview of the escarpment and valley below. 

Llegamos después del anochecer, y así la vista desde nuestra habitación fue revelada en la mañana, las cabañas de Lodge está situado en el borde de la meseta, dando una vista impresionante del cañon y el valle abajo.

Desert elephant

That day we went on the “elephant tracking” activity in the morning and the “sundowner drive” in the afternoon. The former took us back down into the conservancy area to the east of the pass, where we saw giraffe at a distance, and then three groups of desert elephant a long way off, on the top of a hill to the south. Our tracker and driver then used their experience to take us to where these elephant were going, and we were able to get close to one group, and to see the others somewhat further away, although a lot closer than at our initial spotting.

Ese día fuimos a hacer "seguimiento de elefantes" por la mañana y al “paseo del ateradecer" por la tarde. El primero nos llevó de vuelta a la zona de conservación al este del paso, donde vimos la jirafa a una distancia, y luego tres grupos de elefante del desierto muy lejos, en la cima de una colina al sur. Nuestro guía y conductor usaron su experiencia para llevarnos a donde iban estos elefantes, y pudimos acercarnos a un grupo, y ver a los otros un poco más lejos, aunque mucho más cerca que en nuestra primera vista.

The afternoon drive took us to the southern part of the plateau, seeing springbok, mountain zebra, black-backed jackals, and oryx, on our way to a viewpoint from which we had amazing views to the south, with the Brandberg in the distance, and then to a viewpoint where we stopped to watch the sunset and have a drink; the former of these having limited value to us, although the opportunity to chat with those in the group over the “sundowner” was much enjoyed. 

El viaje de la tarde nos llevó a la parte sur de la meseta, viendo springbok, la cebra de montaña, los chacales de dorso negro y el orix, camino de un mirador desde el cual teníamos unas vistas increíbles al sur, Y luego a un punto de vista donde nos detuvimos para ver la puesta de sol y tomar una copa; El primero de estos con valor limitado para nosotros, aunque nos dio la oportunidad de charlar con otra pareja del grupo., que disfrutamos mucho
