After a lovely boat trip early in the morning and an enjoyable conversation during breakfast with other travellers, we headed north east into Samburu territory. When we arrived at the intersection to turn off around the north of the lake, the road was unsurfaced and we had to climb up the escarpment which bounds the valley. The dry and rocky road had beautiful views of the lake, the low speed let us enjoy the flora, and the long drive up was a good opportunity to admire the Pokot people. Families were walking along the road, men with their short sticks, women with their small braids and their bag packs, and young warriors with football team T-shirts playing games with the traditional expressions of their culture.

Después de un encantador viaje en bote a primera hora de la mañana y de una agradable conversación con otros viajeros durante el desayuno, nos dirigimos al noreste hacia el territorio Samburu. Cuando llegamos a la intersección fuimos al lago por el norte, el camino no había sido asfaltado y tuvimos que subir la escarpa que limitaba el valle. El camino seco y rocoso tenía hermosas vistas del lago, la baja velocidad nos permitió disfrutar de la vegetación y el largo viaje fue una buena oportunidad para admirar a la gente Pokot. Las familias caminaban por el camino, los hombres con su bastón corto, las mujeres con sus trenzas pequeñas y sus mochilas y los jóvenes guerreros con su camiseta de fútbol  haciendo juego con las expresiones tradicionales de su cultura.

On the other side of the valley, the Samburu people became evident; this is an agro-pastoral group, which shares its roots and language with the Maasai, they consider the world's livestock as their property and this belief supports perfectly the theft of animals between them, the Turkana, and the Pokot. Six months earlier, this territory was under pressure of insecurity, people were killed and at least 50,000 head of cattle were stolen in the region, apparently with the intention of increasing the power of some groups for the parliamentary elections.

We passed through the area on a Saturday, completely unaware of these antecedents; this was market day, the Samburu live far from towns and market day is the opportunity to socialise and in consequence to show off personal beauty. In the Samburu tradition, the men become warriors at the age of fifteen, this means that they leave the parental home and the care of their mothers to live independently and take the role of protecting the clan and their cattle. The warrior period is 15 years - only after reaching the age of 30 do they became elders and may get married, so it's on market day where unmarried women and warriors can get together and interact with the intention to be selected, so men and women show their best style.

En el otro lado del valle, la gente de Samburu se hizo evidente, este es un grupo agro pastoral,  que comparte sus raíces y el lenguaje con los Masaai, ellos consideran el ganado del mundo como su propiedad y esa creencia apoya perfectamente el robo de cabezas entre ellos, los Turkana y Los Pokot. Hace seis meses, este territorio estuvo bajo presiones de seguridad, personas fueron asesinadas y al menos 50,000 cabezas de ganado fueron robadas en la región, al parecer con la intención de incrementar el poder de algunos grupos para las elecciones parlamentarias. Pasamos por la zona un sábado, en total inconsciencia de estos antecedente, ese era el día de mercado, los samburo suelen vivir lejos de los pueblo, y el día de mercado es la oportunidad para socializar y, en consecuencia, mostrar la belleza personal.

En la tradición de Samburu, los hombres de 15 años se convirtieron en guerreros, eso significa que abandonan la casa paterna y los cuidados de la madre, para vivir de forma independiente y tomar el rol de proteger al clan y su ganado. La etapa de guerrero dura 15 años, solo después de los 30 se hacen mayores, y adquieren el derecho de casarse, entonces el mercado en el lugar en que las mujeres no casadas -una de las dos etapas de la vida de las mujeres- se reúnen con los guerreros, e interactúan con la intención de ser seleccionados, por esto guerreros y mujeres jóvenes muestran su mejor estilo.

The women in Samburu culture have to work hard, their role in the social order is not well recognised, and normally they live at a disadvantage with limited access to education, money, and freedom to make decisions. They have a great ability for beadwork, their necklaces cover the neck, shoulders, and breast, and the original tradition was to wear them without any Shuka covering the body.

They use three different levels of necklaces: the base is a heavy red one with which they cover shoulders and breast, the second is a multicoloured one made with rounded layers of beads, and the last one is a flat necklace smaller in size and very well decorated. The distinctive aspects of a married woman are a brass earring and a chain hanging on one side; if the woman divorces or becomes a widow, the chain is removed.

Las mujeres en la cultura de Samburu tienen que trabajar duro, su rol en el orden social no es bien reconocido y normalmente viven en desventaja con acceso limitado a la educación, el dinero y la libertad para tomar decisiones. Tienen una gran habilidad para las joyas de cuentas, sus collares cubren el cuello, los hombros y el pecho, y la tradición original era usarlos sin ningún Shuka cubriendo el cuerpo. Las mujeres usan tres niveles diferentes de collares: la base es una pesada estructura roja con la que cubren los hombros y el pecho, El Segundo es un collar hecho de varios colores con cordones de cuentas y el último es un collar plano de menor tamaño y muy bien decorado . La distinción de una mujer casada esta dada por  pendientes de bronce y una cadena colgando de un lado, si la mujer se divorcia o queda viuda, la cadena es retirada.

In this land we visited three natural reserves: Samburu, Shaba, and Buffalo Springs Even though they are adjacent to each other the difference between them is huge. Samburu is a green paradise, with beautiful river banks, full of tall trees and dense vegetation, which provided a great opportunity to enjoy every exploration through the extensive network of roads, in which it was possible to see vulturine guinea fowl with their long stripes, amazing groups of dikdiks enjoying the grass at the end of the afternoon, and the impactful Grevy's zebra with unique narrow stripes on their bodies.

En esta tierra pudimos visitar tres reservas naturales: Samburu, Shaba y Bufallo Spring, a pesar de que una es adyacente a la otra, la diferencia entre ellas es enorme. Samburo es un paraíso verde, con una hermosa ribera, llena de árboles altos y una densa vegetación, que nos  brindó una gran oportunidad para disfrutar cada exploración a través de la extensa red de carreteras; en ella fue posible ver el Voltaire Guinea Fow con sus largas plumas blancas como franjas, increíbles grupos de dikdiks disfrutando la hierba al final de la tarde y la impactante cebra gravy con el diseño exclusivo de tiras angostas en su cuerpo.

Shaba is a extensive desert area, with white sands and stunning landscapes, the mountains, the river, and the wetlands proved a unique mix which involved us in a magical journey; there we could appreciate the gerenuk, a very stylish antelope with a small head and long neck, and with the special capacity to eat the new leaves of the thorny acacia and move around the rocky areas; in the extensive plains we found the Beisa Oryx, more pale and very well integrated with the environment, and also the reticulated giraffe, which looks as impressive as a beautiful flower in that setting.

Shaba es una extensa área desértica, con arenas blancas y paisajes deslumbrantes, las montañas, el río y los humedales resultaron ser una mezcla única que nos envolvió en un viaje mágico, allí pudimos apreciar el Generuk un antílope estilizado, con una pequeña cabeza y cuello largo, con la capacidad especial de comer las nuevas hojas de las espinosas acacias y moverse por las zonas rocosas; en las extensas llanuras encontramos el Orix de las rocas, más claro y muy bien integrado con el medio ambiente, y también la jirafa reticulada, que se ve tan impresionante como una hermosa flor en ese espacio.

Buffalo Springs was least attractive for us; it's a very dry and flat land, with more influence of human activities, even though it is a natural reserve; it was frequuent to find people with cattle sharing the limited grass with the great gazelles.

Buffalo springs resultó menos atractivo para nosotros, son tierras muy secas y planas, con mayor influencia de las actividades humanas, a pesar de que es una reserva natural, fue frecuente encontrar personas con ganado, compartiendo la hierba limitada con las grandes gacelas.

We spent a lot of our time in the Shaba area because it is immense and beautiful, but also because we found a place to stay with great comfort and at very good price, an exceptional find. All the people there were really special, they took care of us in a very genuine way and it was great to spend time talking with everyone, especially with Wilson, the Samburu guide, who shared with us a deep explanation of his culture, and it was a surprise when during our dinner on the last day the team in the restaurant and the kitchen made a special dance and songs for us with a delicious cake to express their gratitude and tell us karibu tena, welcome again, and it is likely that we will return.

 Pasamos mucho de nuestro tiempo en el área de Shaba porque es inmensa y hermosa, pero también porque encontramos un lugar donde alojarnos con mucha comodidad y a precios muy buenos, un hallazgo excepcional.  Todas las personas allí fueron realmente especiales, nos cuidaron en una manera muy genuina y fue genial pasar tiempo hablando con todos, especialmente con Wilson, el guía Samburo, quien compartió con nosotros una explicación profunda de su cultura, cual fue nuestra sorpresa cuando durante la cena del último día el equipo del restaurante y La Cocina hicieron un baile especial y cantos para nosotros con un delicioso pastel para expresar su gratitud y decirnos Karibu Tena, bienvenidos de nuevo, y es así allí volveremos de nuevo.
