Serengeti: rich in wildlife, shocking roads /Rico en vida silvestre, carreteras atroces

220 km de corrugaciones, las vibraciones resultantes atravesaron nuestro cuerpo por 8 horas de manera incesante, cuando dejamos el carro la sensación de las vibraciones continuaron por un tiempo, así nos recibió el Serengeti, estamos seguros que después de esta experiencia cualquier bloqueo energético ha sido disuelto.

220 Km of corrugations, the resulting vibrations pulsed through our bodies for 8 hours incessantly; when we left the car the feeling of vibrations continued for a while;  in this way the Serengeti received us, we are sure that after this experience any energy blockage had been dissolved.

Entrando por el corredor occidental las pequeñas gacelas Thompson nos dieron la bienvenida, están solas o en pequeños grupos, meneando su cola negra permanentemente, los topi aparecieron en la llanura amarilla de pastos secos; las  cebras con su precioso pelaje rayando rompieron la monotonía del gris del del cielo y el amarillo de la tierra. En nuestro primer desvío, un grupo de leonas y cachorros descansando al lado de la ruta nos sorprendieron y por primera vez pudimos apreciar su pelaje manchado.


Entering the western corridor the little Thomson’s gazelles welcomed us, alone or in small groups, wagging their black tails continuously; the topi appeared on the yellow plains of dry pasture; the zebras with their precious striped coats broke the monotony of the grey of the sky and the yellow of the earth. In our first detour, a group of lionesses and cubs resting beside the road surprised us and for the first time we could appreciate their spotted pelt.

Seguimos hacia el este y  bajo el sol de medio día un grupo de jirafas con botines blancos descansaban en la suave sombra de una acacia, otras dos, simplemente fueron al suelo a dormitar, las jirafas duermen sentadas con la cabeza erguida, y sus periodos de sueños profundo son muy cortos.

We continued to the east and under the midday sun a group of giraffes with white booties rested in the soft shade of an acacia, two others, simply dropped to the ground to doze - giraffes sleep sitting with their heads up, and their periods of deep dreams are very short.

Dejando el corredor occidental con al esperanza de encontrar un camino de mejor calidad, nos dirigimos al nor-oriente. En el primer puente dos machos y una hembra nos detuvieron, su presencia pausada e imponente, corresponde con el rol de reyes que les ha sido asignado. Durante la tarde, grupos de cebras, wildebeest y topis, acompañaron el camino, y un hermoso  dik-dík finalmente hizo su aparición. Al momento de tomar la desviación a Lobo, el paisaje se tornó montañoso, rocoso y verde, las manadas pastaban con calma y la luz del sol las embellecía cuidadosamente. En lo alto las jirafas comían cerca de la rocas y mientras las observábamos, las  hienas salieron de su madriguera para calentarse con los últimos rayos del sol.

Leaving the western corridor with the hope of finding a better road, we headed north-east. At the first bridge two male lions and one female stopped us, their presence slow and imposing, corresponding to the role of kings which has been assigned to them. During the afternoon, groups of zebra, wildebeest, and topi accompanied our way, and a beautiful dik-dik finally made its appearance. At the moment of turning off to Lobo, the landscape became mountainous, rocky, and green; the herds grazed calmly and the sunlight enhanced their beauty with care. Above us giraffes ate near the rocks and as we watched, hyenas came out of their burrow to warm up with the last rays of the sun.

Llegamos al campamento y encontramos una manada de turistas, carros de safari, tiendas de acampar y varios búfalos pastando alrededor, no había espacio para acomodar nuestro carro en un terreno plano, así que nos ubicamos debajo de unos árboles un poco afuera del sitio señalado, cuando llegaron los vecinos de la noche anterior, decidieron acampar con nosotros. Las instalaciones sanitarias de este campamento son precarias, y su estado francamente asqueroso,  ante las evidencia de sobre-ocupación, los guarda parques aceptaron nuestra ubicación y nos permitieron encender un fuego pequeño para nuestra protección.

We arrived at the camp and found a herd of tourists, safari cars, camping tents, and several buffalo grazing around, there was no space to accommodate our car on flat terrain, so we located ourselves under some trees a little outside the site; when our neighbours of the night before arrived, they decided to camp with us. The sanitary facilities of this camp are precarious, and their state really disgusting; given the evidence of over-occupation, the park rangers accepted our location and allowed us to light a small fire for our protection.

La noche fue perfecta, dormimos bajo la mirada de hienas y chacales y el viento fuerte mantuvo nuestra cama fresca, lastimosamente nuestro vecinos sufrieron por la misma causa y su noche fue perturbada por el interminable ruido de sus carpas.

The night was perfect, we slept under the eyes of hyenas and jackals, and the strong wind kept our bed cool, unfortunately our neighbours suffered for the same reason and their night was disturbed by the interminable noise of their tents.

Tomamos la ruta hacia el norte para encontrar  la migración de Wildebeest, las laderas de lobo estaban repletas en la primera hora de sol y nuevamente las hienas merodeaban el lugar. Pronto en la principal, justo después del cruce del puente, la imagen soñada y en un sentido anhelada se hizo realidad, un hermosos leopardo descansando en la rama de un árbol, poderlo observar tranquilamente fue un gran placer.


We took the route north to seek the wildebeest migration, the mountain slopes were full in the first hour of sunshine and again the hyenas prowled. Soon on the main road, just after crossing a bridge, the image dreamed of and wished for came true: a beautiful leopard resting on the branch of a tree, to be able to watch it quietly was a great pleasure.

Dejamos la ruta principal, también corrugada en esta área, para tomar una deliciosa ruta arenosa, fluida y ondulante al norte del río Bologanja. La ruta está llena de espacio, bosques al lado del río y manadas de animales moviéndose alrededor, los grupos de Eland siempre cautelosos, seguramente escapando del hombre cazador, y los Coke's harthebees iluminando el horizonte con sus traseros claros.



We left the main route, also badly corrugated in this area, to take a delicious sandy, flowing, and undulating route north of the River Bologanja. The route is spacious, with forests along the river, and herds of animals moving around; elands, always cautious groups, surely escaping from the hunter, and the Coke's hartebeest illuminating the horizon with their pale rear ends.





Siguiendo la ruta un grupo de carros de safari se movía ansioso en el horizonte, así que los seguimos para encontrar un grupo de Leones machos y hembras con cachorros, muy pronto llegamos al extremo del río Mara donde pudimos apreciar la migración del Ñu.

Following the road a group of safari cars moved anxiously on the horizon, so we followed them to find a group of male and female lions with cubs; very soon we reached the end of the Mara River where we could appreciate the migration of the wildebeest.

Cientos y cientos de Ñus esperaban congregados, con sus cuerpos alineándose en la dirección del cruce. Cuando alguno considera que es el tiempo comienza la marcha y los ñus que parecen en reposo comienzan a moverse en la dirección señalada por el grupo, en el horizonte el paisaje de colinas amarillas se llena de líneas negras bien definidas todas en dirección al punto elegido. El caminar es pausado, excepto por los pequeños Ñus que se mueven más rápido buscando estar al lado de sus madres, la calma se cambia por ansiedad al momento de cruzar, los reto de la altura de las riveras, el agua, las rocas del lecho del río, y los cocodrilos esperando con sigilo, son razones suficientes para elevar la preocupación, pasado el cruce el sonido sordo de los llamados  se hace continuo hasta que en la siguiente colina el nuevo espacio y el nuevo pasto dan paso a la calma. Del lado humano la marcha es distinta, en la cima de la colina los carros esperan entre bebidas, piernas estiradas y ojos que buscan el siguiente movimiento, cuando inicia la marcha, todos los carros de mueven con frenesí para alcanzar un buen lugar cerca del cruce y sus movimientos poco cuidadosos tienen el poder de bloquear la marcha y poner toda la escena en espera de nuevo.

Hundreds and hundreds of wildebeest awaited in congregations, their bodies lining up in the direction of the crossing. When one decides that it is the time to begin the march the wildebeest which seem to be at rest begin to move in the direction indicated; to the horizon the landscape of yellow hills is filled with well-defined black lines all heading towards the chosen point. Walking is slow, except for the smaller wildebeest which move more quickly to be with their mothers; the calm alters to anxiety at the time of the crossing - the challenges of the height of the banks, the water, the bedrock of the river, and the crocodiles waiting secretly, are reasons enough to heighten concern; once past the crossing the grunting sound of the calls dies away as they continue until on the next hill the new open space and the fresh grass lead to calm. On the human side the march is different, at the top of the hill the cars wait between drinks, stretching legs and eyes, looking for the next movement: when the march starts, all the cars move frenetically to reach a good place near the crossing, and their careless movements have the power to stop the march and put the whole scene on hold again.

Hacia el sur el área de lobo con montañas rocosas y praderas más altas en un buen lugar para las manadas de cebras y antílopes, los hermosos y pequeños Daikers se pasean al rededor con tranquilidad, mientras las cebras escalan las rocas. En la base los búfalos se apropian del lugar y con la oscuridad pastan con determinación. En la noche cuando el fuego se extinguía después de nuestra cena, un sonido persistente de la hierba nos alertó, cuando iluminamos detrás de nosotros, al menos 200 búfalos comían a 10 metros de donde estábamos, de inmediato tuvimos que encender el fuego y acelerar nuestros rituales antes de dormir para alcanzar un lugar seguro.

To the south the rocky mountain slopes and higher prairies are good places for the herds of zebra and antelope, the beautiful little duikers wander around quietly, while the zebras climb the rocks. At the base the buffaloes take over and in the darkness graze with determination. At night when our fire was extinguished after dinner, a persistent sound in the grass alerted us, when we shone our light behind us, at least 200 buffalo were grazing 10 metres away, we immediately lit the fire and accelerated our rituals before bed to be safe.

Las faenas de caza de los leones no dieron espera, en la pradera de pastos más altos, pequeñas orejas redondas aparecen intermitentemente, contamos seis 6, subían y bajaban como quien está despierto pero realmente quiere dormir, a lo lejos un León miraba y dormía bajo un pequeño arbusto, un sonido agudo fue la señal y con ella 11 cachorros corrieron para asir la presa, el león con tono más pausado se movió hasta el lugar, por un instante una danza de polvo y colas fue lo único visible. El rugido del león saco del juego a unos cuantos cachorros flacos y corrió la presa lejos del grupo para comer su bocado, perdido entre la hierba.

The lion hunt did not delay: in the open higher grassland, small round ears appeared intermittently, we counted six pairs, they went up and down like one who is awake but really wants to sleep, in the distance a lion watched and dozed under a small shrub; a sharp sound was the signal and with it eleven cubs ran to grab the prey, the lion with a more leisurely pace moved towards the same place, for a moment a dance of dust and tails was the only thing visible. The roar of the lion ejected a few skinny cubs from the prey who took morsels away to eat, lost in the grass.

Leona al asecho

Un poco más adelante, una leona saludable y lactando se esconde sentada entre el pasto, pone en la mira a un pequeño antílope, lo sigue despacio, se acuesta al asecho, un llamado de alerta es hecho por otro miembro de la manada, el antílope sale del caño y se detiene paralizado como quien no quiere ser visto y dando cortas secuencias de pasos hasta salir del objetivo, al otro lado el grupo lo espera, un macho se hacer a su encuentro y luego de lo que podríamos llamar saludos, lo custodia hasta el grupo, esta vez está a salvo y la leona vuelve a ubicarse en posición  de espera para comenzar de nuevo.

A little further on, a healthy, lactating lioness seated hidden in the grass spots a small antelope, follows it slowly, then lies down; an alarm call is made by another member of the herd, the antelope leaves the rushes and stops, paralysed like someone who does not want to be seen, taking short sequences of steps to get away; further away the herd is waiting, a male antelope meets the intended victim, and after what we could call greetings, shepherds is into safety, and the lioness returns to the waiting position to start again.

Aguas arriba, una chita mira  entre los matorrales, cerca dos hienas se pelean por el cuerpo de una gacela thompson, una de ellas toma la presa y corre con ella colgando de su boca, la otra deja el sitio y la persigue, el chacal se acerca al lugar, toma una parte de la presa y huye en la dirección contraria hasta esconderse, segundos después, más hienas se unen al evento  corriendo desde el este y con su llegada los carros inician un frenético movimiento al rededor creando una cortina de polvo que termina con la escena, mientras tanto tres jirafas siguen comiendo las hojas verdes de una acacia justo al lado de la acción, moviéndose lenta y delicadamente; como en nuestra vida todas las realidades ocurren en un mismo momento.

Further upstream, a cheetah looks out from the bushes, close to two hyenas fighting over the body of a Thomson’s gazelle, one taking the prey and running away with it hanging from its mouth, the other chasing it, a jackal grabbing a part of the carcass and fleeing in the opposite direction into hiding; seconds later, more hyenas join the event, running in from the east, and with their arrival the safari cars start a frantic movement around the area creating a curtain of dust which curtails vision, meanwhile three giraffes continue to eat the green leaves of an acacia just next to the action, moving slowly and delicately; as in our life all realities occur at the same time.
