Central Kalahari Game Reserve: un lugar intenso / : an intense place

Dos pequeñas huellas blancas en el pastizal seco y desgastado indicaban la ruta a la reserva natural del Kalahari central - CKGR, iniciamos el trayecto y pronto las huellas dejaron de serlo para dar paso a una carretera de arena con huellas  profundas y depresiones súbitas cercada por la maleza. Todo alrededor muestra su dureza, aquella que se requiere para soportar la adversidad de los elementos, los arbustos son fuertes y su chirrido contra el carro es implacable, el viento mueve el paisaje en su dirección, el sol ilumina intensamente y seca  todo a su paso, las cortezas de los árboles son duras y se retuercen para crear formas atractivas a las sombras.

Two narrow white tracks in the dry worn out grass indicated the route to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR); we started along this trajectory and soon the tracks disappeared to be replaced by a sand road with deep ruts and sudden dips surrounded by the bush. Everything around us showed its fortitude, needed to resist the adversity of the elements: the branches of the bush are robust and their screeching against the car implacable, the constant wind bends everything to its will, the sun shines intensely and dries everything in its passage, the bark of the trees is hard and twisted, creating attractive shadows.

Luego de una hora llegamos a la puerta del parque, un proceso de registro rápido y la recomendación de revisar la tarjeta de los últimos avistamientos, curioso, los puntos rojos indicaban leopardo en los lugares de campamento en Deception. Continuamos la ruta, arena, viento, la mata dura y el espacio en toda su extensión. Llegamos al sitio de acampar al limite de los últimos rayos de luz, el espacio era inmenso, limitado por dos construcciones en madera al fondo: un espacio par ducharse si tiene agua y ducha portátil y una letrina seca- y los matorrales alrededor interrumpidos por los senderos de circulación de los animales, no cercas y nadie alrededor - a diferencia de los sitios de acampar visitados hasta ahora, estos son muy distantes unos de otros, no es posible percibir siquiera la existencia de otro ser humano alrededor, sentimos en ese momento lo inhóspito del lugar, no agua, ninguna opción de abastecimiento y nadie alrededor, todo nuestro ser alerta y vivimos en alerta los siguientes días.

After an hour we arrived at the entrance to the reserve; a quick registration process and recommendation to review the recent sightings. Curious; the red spots showed Leopard at the Deception campsites. We continued on our way; sand, wind, the tough bush, and space in all its extent. We arrived at the campsite in the last rays of sunlight. The site was immense, delimited by two wooden structures at the end: one for a shower, if you had water and a portable shower; the other a "long drop" latrine; the surrounding bush interrupted by the trails of animals. No fences and no-one else around - in contrast to the campsites we had visited so far, these were far from each other, one could not even sense the presence of another human being. We felt at this point how inhospitable the place was; no water, nowhere to obtain anything, and no one else around - our whole being alert; we lived on alert for the next few days.

Días claros y noches frías, dada la restricción de diésel, elegimos concentrar nuestro tiempo en dos sobras: Deception Valley y los altos de Sunday Pan and Leopard Pan. En Deception Valley, las nubes se mueven rápido con el viento como si estuviéramos viendo una película a mayor velocidad, en las planicies extensas los pastos altos y florecidos se  mueven en la dirección obligada y proporcionan el fondo propicio para los animales, grupos de springbok y oryx, rompen  la quietud del paisaje embelleciendo con su presencia  el horizonte. La extensión de este parque es tan grande que los animales parecen ausentes, entonces cuando es posible verlos el disfrute es supremo. Pronto percibimos las cabezas aireadas de los Kori Bustards, atractivos siempre a la vista y más cuando es posible verlos en grupos, igual sorpresa genera la presencia y abundancia de Secretary birds, moviéndose incansablemente y tomando vuelo para mantener una distancia prudente de los humanos. Grupos de árboles rompen las extensas planicies y proporcionan un lugar no sólo para curiosear buscando los felinos, sino para las largos tiempos de contemplación y espera.

Clear days and cold nights. Given the limitations of our fuel we chose to concentrate our time in two areas: Deception Valley and the heights of Sunday Pan and Leopard Pan. in Deception Valley the clouds passed overhead as if we were watching a film in fast motion. On the wide plains the high grass in flower bent in the wind and provided the backdrop for the animals, groups of springbok and oryx breaking the calm of the vista and creating a beautiful horizon. The extent of this reserve is so great that the animals seem absent, so that when you do see them it's a joy. Soon we saw the uplifted heads of Kori Bustards, always attractive and even more in groups. It was surprising to see an abundance of Secretary Birds, always on the move and taking to the air to maintain a prudent distance from humans. Groups of trees break the grassy plains providing places not only to seek felines but also as shady vantage points from which to wait and contemplate,

El vuelo de los rapaces contrasta con el azul del cielo y su postura pausada sobre las ramas secas llama continuamente nuestra atención, dando paso a la observación de otros pájaros que enriquecen la experiencia.

Birds in flight contrasted with the blue sky and their posture when perched on branches continually held our attention, opening opportunities to see other birds, enriching the experience.

 Moviéndonos hacia el norte, la ruta es ascendente, cerrada por el matorral y con arena más suelta, a través de ella llegamos a los planos más altos e inunda de Sunday Pan y Leopard pan, bellas extensiones de que permitieron nuestro primer avistamiento de Leopardo y Chita, ambos de extraordinaria y particular belleza. El leopardo sigiloso y ágil, capaz de mimetizarse con el entorno y desaparecer. Las chitas delicadas, alerta, y con un toque juguetón, buscando las oportunidades para cazar su presa.

We moved further north, the track climbing, enclosed by the bush and with softer sand, and leading us to the higher recently flooded Sunday and Leopard pans, beautiful expanses which gave us our first opportunity to see leopard and cheetah, both of extraordinary and distinctive beauty. The leopard precise and agile, capable of blending into the background and disappearing. The cheetahs delicate, alert, and with a touch of playfulness, seeking opportunities to hunt their prey.

Las condiciones del lugar estimularon el,cambio de nuestras rutinas, cada día comenzaba nuestro recorrido con las primeras luces, luego en un sitio de camping cercano preparábamos nuestro desayuno y elegíamos un nuevo lugar de avistamiento, hacia las 13:00 regresábamos al  sitio de campamento para preparar un almuerzo robusto y un bocado para la cena. Hacia las 16:00 nuevamente a un lugar de observación, al anochecer en el carro preparábamos las fotos del día y manejamos rápidamente las rutinas de la noche para luego dormir, el carro fue nuestra caverna.

 The conditions of the environment stimulated a change in our routine; every day we set out at first light, then in a convenient campsite we prepared our breakfast, and then we chose another vantage point; around 1300h we returned to our campsite to prepare a robust lunch and something light for dinner later. At 1600h to another observation point and at sunset we reviewed the day's photos in the car and then took care of our nightly routines before retiring to our cave (the car) for the night.

Los días pasaron entre el silencio, la sorpresa, la admiración y el miedo, al dejar el parque está belleza cruzo la ruta cuando estábamos tomando nuestro almuerzo, y en ella se representan de forma exacta estos mismos atributos.

The days passed in a combination of silence, surprise, admiration, and trepidation; on leaving the reserve this beauty crossed our path while we were having lunch, expressing exactly these attributes.
