Jinja and Sipi Falls: Ugandan waters / aguas de Uganda

Source of the Nile

From Kampala our plans were to head east towards Kenya, via Jinja and Mount Elgon.  We headed out of Kampala by a route which is longer but avoids most of the city traffic, via Gayaza. Jinja is at the "Source of the Nile" (i.e., the Victoria Nile) and we chose to stay at the Living Waters Resort, which has an excellent location overlooking the river as it flows out of the Lake, although in other respects it's not exceptional.

De Kampala nuestro plan era salir por el oriente hacia Kenia, vía Jinja y Monte Elgon. Salimos de Kampala por una ruta que esta más larga pero evita mucho del tráfico de la ciudad, vía Gayaza. Jinja esta en la " Fuente del Nilo" (i.e., el Nilo Victoria) y elegimos quedarnos en Living Waters Resort, que tiene una ubicación excelente mirando el río saliendo del lago, pero en otros aspectos no ofrece nada excepcional.

We decided to visit the Kilombera weaving factory, on the east bank of the river about 45 minutes drive north of Jinja, where Godfrey showed us around the workshop, in which beautiful textiles are woven. We then returned to Jinja, stopping at the excellent Java House Café (for a good coffee, in contrast to most places in the region, which offer "false coffee"), before taking care of a minor task on the car at the "mechanics market" and then walking around the town of Jinja.

Elegimos visitar la fábrica de tela de Kilombera, a la orilla del río, donde Godfrey nos mostró el taller, con creación de telas muy lindas. Entonces volvimos a Jinja, parando al excelente Java House Café (para disfrutar un buen café, en contra a la mayoría de sitios en la region, que ofrecen "café falso" -instantaneo-), antes de ir al "mercado de mecánicos" por un arreglo pequeño del auto, y después una caminata en el centro del pueblo.

Several falls on the Nile after leaving Lake Victoria have been submerged by the building of a dam downstream of the lake exit, however Itanda Falls, further downstream and visited by few tourists, remains a powerful cascade of water over a drop of about 7m, impressive in its energy. We drove back downriver to see the falls, enjoying not only the spectacle of the water, but also the day to day activities of the local people, doing their laundry, and washing motorcycles and shoes. We returned southwards, stopping for dinner at the Black Lantern, arriving in time to appreciate the view over the river as night fell.

Varias cataratas del Nilo fueron sumergidas porque construyeron un embalse cerca al lago, pero las Cataratas de Itanda, más al norte, y poco visitado por turistas, permancen con sus agua poderosas en una caida de 7m, impresionante por su poder. Conducimos aguas abajo para ver esta catarata, disfrutando no sólo el espectáculo del agua, también los lugareños en sus tareas cotidianas; haciendo lavandería, lavando motos y botas. Volvimos al norte, para disfrutar el atardecer en el rio en Black Lantern, y nuestra cena.

Sipi falls - lower fall

The following day we headed east towards Mount Elgon, via Tororo and Mbale. Our objective was Sipi Falls, on the slopes of the mountain, reached via the road north from Mbale and then a steep ascent up the mountain to the small town of Sipi Falls. We stayed at Lacam Lodge, with a superb view of the lowermost falls from our banda.

El día siguiente salimos hacia el Monte Elgon, via Tororo y Mabel. Nuestro destino fue Sipi Falls, en las faldas de la montaña, llegando por la ruta al norte de Mbale y después por un ascenso muy inclinado de la montaña al pueblo pequeño de Sipi Falls. Nos quedamos a Lacam Lodge, con una vista maravillosa de la catarata más baja desde nuestra banda.

Camaleon

The following day we went for a walk with our guide Alex, to explore the falls - there are several beautiful falls as the river descends the mountain, and in addition it was interesting to walk through the villages and fields, learning about day to day life in the area, which is fertile, given volcanic soil and reliable rainfall. We were pleased to see chameleons, which are employed as a biological control measure to protect the coffee trees.

El día siguiente día hicimos una caminata con nuestro guía Alex para explorar las cataratas - tienen varias cascadas en el río bajando la montaña, adicionalmente fue muy rico caminar enrte las fincas y los cultivos, para aprender mas de la vida cotidiana en la región, que es fértil, con suelo volcánico y lluvias confiables. Nos gustó ver camaleones, que son empleados como agente biológico de control por los árboles de café.

Sipi falls - upper fall

From here we head for Kenya; our plan is to travel via the road which circumnavigates Mount Elgon to the north, and enter Kenya at the Suam border post, which is supposed to be about a 4-1/2 hour drive from Sipi Falls. This proved to be an optimistic estimate...

De aquí vamos a Kenia; nuestro plan es viajar por la ruta que pasa alrededor de Monte Elgon al norte, entrando Kenia al puesto fronteriza de Suam, que supuestamente es 4-1/2 horas de Sipi Falls. Discubrimos que ese es un estimado optimista...
