Livingstone un dia inolvidable en varios sentidos / Linvingstone: An unforgettable day in several senses ES/EN

It seems unbelievable that today we are enjoying the place where we woke up, finally beginning a journey more balanced, with more time in each place, and more calm. It was a tranquil awakening, with time to enjoy the rosy dawn and the fresh morning breeze, just going out on the verandah and drinking coffee every cell wakes and soon we are ready to enjoy the day.

We had various things to do: adjust the headlamps, shop for groceries, visit the Victoria Falls from the Zambian side, and visit the local market. Taking a responsible attitude we started by seeking to adjust the headlamps; we arrived easily at the appropriate site, and after a short conversation it was all hands to the wheel, everything done, we paid, got into the car to start it, and as you are no doubt expecting, the car wouldn' t start. Now we were at least in the right place, a workshop.

After checking this and that, we decided to change the starter motor. An hour later, everything ready, the magic words : "start the car". Turned the key with the expectation of hearing the motor roar, and no, a a tiny click. Waited a while until the arrival of Oscar the electrician, who checked a few things, removed the starter relay, did some adjustments (?), and then started the car, "now it's OK madam, everything will be OK".

Given that the time in the workshop had been extensive, we decided to explore one of the markets in the centre at midday, three dishes were available: meat pie, samosas, and stew of chicken neck and feet. Marce wanted to try the latter, the dark thick sauce having generated much curiosity, however it was not easy, and the samosas won, to the relief of the lads in the workshop we had something to eat.

Now tranquil we went to visit the Victoria Falls on the Zambian side: what a volume of water! A bewitching spectacle. The depth of the fall, the wind, the volume of water, created the impression of a column of water droplets driven upwards which could be seen easily.

The falls have a width of 1.7 Km. We walked by the trail which gives a view from various points, with the certainty that we would be able to see a third of the total width, the northern side of the cataract. Given that the extent of the trail on the Zambian side is a lot shorter than that on the Zimbabwean side the park has far fewer visitors and it was possible to take our time to appreciate the water fall, in spite of the intense spray in one area of the trail leaving us like drenched cats.

After our shower we decided to take a boat on the Zambezi, to end the day the river was tranquil and quiet, the river full, we could see hippopotamus, bushbuck, monkeys, and various birds which we had not previously seen.

At sunset it was time for a good dinner; given that we planned an early start the following morning we decided to pick up some groceries first. We stocked up and then ready to eat, discovered that the car would not start...

Thanks to the help of Isaac, the manager of Kudu Café, we ate a light but delicious dinner, following which Sam and his team came to the rescue, made some adjustments, decided to "hotwire" the starter motor, so that at midnight we were able to return to the Lodge, where we laughed at our day, enjoyed a glass of wine, and prepared for the following day.

Once In Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), we met Raymond, who introduced us to Nelson and Ochinga - two experts who did a complete check of the electrics of the car, found various failures in the wiring connections which were preventing the batteries from charging, and corrected everything so that we now have smooth and reliable starting. Nelson's phone number is: +263772815393.

Our journey from Nakonde to Livingstone can be described in 6 images:

The following photo shows the scenery for 90% of the way. The Miombo forest, trees with undulating branches in unpredictable shapes, interspersed with grasses and bushes. Given that the canopy is never closed, the ground vegetation grows, creating a wall on either side of the road through which nothing can be seen.

During the first 200 Km of the journey, the road was one of those one would wish to avoid repeating; deep potholes, surface rippled by the passage of overloaded vehicles, deep drop-offs at the borders of the narrow "carriageway". In addition, there were frequent police checkpoints, many tractor-trailers / articulated trucks, and rain - heavy downpours - to complete the scene.

In about the first 400 miles the only products for sale at the roadside were charcoal and chickens. Between 400 and 600 miles tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin appeared, all well-presented in pyramids on top of buckets, as well as straw brooms, and at the end of the route we saw pottery and a wider range of vegetables, however without doubt charcoal is the iconic roadside product.

As a result of the heavy rain and the high concentration of tractor/trailers (articulated lorries) we had to navigate past 7 accidents partially blocking the road, including one involving a loaded gas/petrol tanker, which demonstrated the standard practice for warning of immobilised vehicles - cutting down branches from nearby trees or bushes and putting several of them discreetly in the road, with the obligatory warning triangle placed a metre or so from the vehicle. We have to confess that in the combination of rain and the profusion of greenery it was not possible to see these natural warnings opportunely.

Our idea to reach Lusaka approved impossible, hence we stayed in Mkushi, in the campsite of the Forest Inn, since there were no rooms available when we arrived however we were able to camp, so we had a delicious dinner and then set up the car to sleep. We installed the mosquito nets on the car windows, with the animal-proof guards, put everything in its place, made a last trip to the bathroom, and were ready to sleep in our mobile bed. It was a delicious night, fresh, and without rain. Everything worked well, and in minutes we were sleeping peacefully. The following morning we both enjoyed a hot shower at dawn.

Rain, rain, and more rain! Added to which the rumble of truck tyres.

We arrived at our night stop exhausted, having completed 13 hours  of driving, however our fatigue evaporated on seeing the Zambezi under the light of the moon  and hearing the grunts of hippopotami enjoying their evening grazing. Time to be, to breathe more slowly, enjoy the night breeze and a cup of tea.

Alan y Marce

Será que finalmente llegamos a Mbeya ES / At last really in Mbeya EN

After taking Dawa, a medicinal tea with much ginger, and stocking up on hot coffee with earthy flavour, we headed off on the road to Chunya. After two hours of slow progress on a road which felt like a punishment, or more positively the perfect excuse to feel in heaven when we finally arrived at our destination, we were at last driving on a surfaced and well-marked road, and we began an ascent which would give us a view of the Great Rift Valley, and with increasing altitude the scenery changed and we were to be surprised by the wide vista which we had missed over the last few days.

Great Rift Valley - Mbeya -Tanzania

Finally we arrived in Mbeya, and with hunger looked for breakfast and a Toyota workshop to check the car. The owner of the hotel where we breakfasted drew us a pencil and paper map which was much appreciated; its indications were precise and led us without pause to the workshop before midday.

Once there we started checking, took the starter motor apart, cleaned it, greased it, and changed a few components, and once reinstalled it worked. As so often happens, one thing led to another and we did some additional work needed on the car, finally leaving the workshop at the end of the afternoon for the border.

We left Zambia for Nakonde around midnight, Alan's immigration being complicated by the need to switch passports, however when we found that multi-entry e-visas could not be used at this crossing, we simply used the passport with the exit stamp from Tanzania. The formalities for the car were handled with no problem. ...and so, we were ready to embark on the road to Lusaka the following day (later that day, in reality).

Abrazos,
Alan y Marce

Ahora sí a Mbeya ES / Nearly in Mbeya EN

We left the hotel as early as possible, after a breakfast which emerged from the kitchen bit by bit, although this did permit us to appreciate each component fully. When the value of the food had dropped below the value of the time involved, we left.

The road continued with the same quality we had experienced the previous day, then after 117 Km we arrived at the junction at which the other road led to Dodoma, however in front of us lay a red earthen scar which headed off to infinity between green banks. We had in front of us 498 Km., which would be a challenge. The previous night we had slept through a tropical downpour, which had reminded us of the delight of rainstorms in Manizales, which invite delicious sleep, and a wish to sleep endlessly in the rain, and not have to get up and walk to school in the wet. The earth is clay, and when wet is as slick as an ice rink; potholes appeared, which were water-filled, however at first the route was passable and enjoyable. In the entire trajectory we passed 3 trucks, a 'bus, a pickup, a few bicycles carrying water or wood, and hundreds of people of all ages who came and went the whole time, creating a sense of company throughout the journey.

After four hours we arrived at Rungwa, a key intersection between the road south and the road northeast to Tabora; an obligatory 'bus stop, and the biggest town (village) in the area. We found a market at the 'bus stop (for the only 'bus on the road); various stands were selling their delights. We walked around and found that they all sold the same thing - chip omelette, kebabs, and fried banana. So this was our lunch - everyone did his / her best to look after us, scaring away the flies from the available table and bench, cleaning same with a coffee-coloured (once white) cloth, a metal slice to divide the banana and a black plastic bag each for our halves of the lunch, and three toothpicks with which to eat. Everything was delicious, we ended up full, and when we had finished we were shown the urn from which to wash our hands, soap included, the full service.

After our break we continued south, passing between two or three natural parks. We hoped to see a few animals, and did see a few monkeys. The trees became more riotous and thicker, and the road began to deteriorate; 4 hours later we arrived at the first filling station in 8 hours, and we stopped to buy fuel. When we were ready to continue the car wouldn't start - now what! Barack, the filling station guy, brought out the battery for running the pumps to try jump starting, however this did not work. He borrowed a friend's motorbike to find a car which could provide more power for a jump start, meanwhile we checked the batteries which appeared to indicate adequate power, lending weight to Alan's theory that the starter had jammed, then we tried various remedies without success. Via Elia and Barack we made contact with the closest mechanic, in a village 40 Km away, for whom a motorbike was despatched.

During this process boys and girls arrived, looking at us as strange beings, and when we said "hello" ran off, so we began a game of chase with them, following which we had a Kiswahili lesson. We learned everyone's name and finally the names of colours. One of the kids arrived with a football made of rubber and string so we played a game of football, or to be more honest they played and we ran after them.

Two hours later the mechanic, with an assistant, arrived, for us to discover that two hours of rest for the car gave it sufficient interest in starting that it started upon our seeking to demonstrate the problem... so now we were ready to continue, however we then adjusted the bed to allow the rear seat to be used to carry the mechanic and his assistant home again to Lupa.

Barak camiste azul, primer plano. Elia camisa a cuadros blacos y negros.

From Lupa there remained 25 Km to Makongolosi; we decided to continue with the hope that at the next intersection we would encounter a better road. Two things surprised us: first the road got worse and it was impossible to drive at more than 20 Km/h; second, once we reached the junction the road got even worse. It was now 2200h, we decided to continue the 20 Km to the only campsite advertised, after 24 Km we came to the New Achinwene hotel, which had a room with a bathroom; at 2300h one's standards become radically more flexible and anything will do.

An enthusiastic gentleman, under the effects of alcohol, approached us and took charge of ensuring that we were appropriately accommodated. This was Frank, the local Art teacher, for whom the hotel was not only his "local" but was also owned by one of his ex-pupils. He arranged food - 5 dollars-worth of lamb, cooked in traditional Maasai style, we sat at a table, beer in hand, music playing as if it were Friday night, finally relaxing, while the teacher began his life story, a 41 year old professional in plastic arts, son of a family of teachers since his grandfather, frustrated by his failed adventures, painter, sculptor, and musician whose songs had been stolen by others, 15 years teaching at a school of 150 pupils, worn down by daily challenges: huge classes, parents who saw no value in education, governments which gave no support, regional supervisors who stole his ideas and opportunities, ex-pupils more successful than he, now in the business of mining and land licensing, with no capital to invest. Throughout his story we could see his frustrated dreams of being a world-famous artist, as well as his need to succeed. So we talked for a while, which seemed eternal. During his relating appeared Mike, a tall discreet Maasai, who had been sent to check something; a little while later a gesture of approval heralded the arrival of the lamb, which proved delicious, and so the four of us continued conversing as the lamb disappeared. Frank began arranging our agenda for the following day, a good moment to bring the conversation to a close, clarify expectations, and go to bed. It was already 0030h.

The room can be described simply: clean and limited bed, pink mosquito net, everything else best left unsaid. We fell to sleep like logs however 20 minutes later Marce awoke, being eaten alive by mosquitoes, so that the glorious pink net was unfurled, and then like a good princess in a fairy tale, she slept alongside her prince until woken by the village music in the morning at 0630h, reminded that life goes on.

Babati - casi Mbeya ES / Babati - almost to Mbeya EN

As noted in the title we didn't get to Mbeya as we had planned. After buying a Tanzanian SIM card to be able to use data in Tanzania, and taking out more cash, since Tanzania is a cash economy, we set out for Mbeya as our destination for that day.

Our first milestone being Singida, we took to the road and started to climb, and as we did so the houses changed from mud to brick, and we could see small ovens available for making the bricks. Some houses had walls covered with plaster, while others had exposed brick.

Around us continued shepherds and their flocks, men and women with their hoes working on their holdings or walking along the road, children walking to school, some with tools to work on their plots, and others, smaller, playing around, while women walked on one side or the other with baskets or bags on their heads and small babies on their backs.

The route undulates, it’s easy to travel from one village to the next, and on entering each village the speed limit is marked as 50 Km/h, with three rumble strips and a “sleeping policeman": one at entry and on departure; this practice is consistent along the highway, and it’s not unusual to encounter police intent on ensuring compliance.

Nearer Singida, various rocky outcrops started to appear, increasing the attractiveness of the landscape; these rocky islands, each with a different relationship with its surroundings, made each kilometre a new vista. On arriving at Singida we stopped to eat something and then continue. It was the first town we encountered with an identifiable main street, and whose houses presented a different façcde, suited to commercial activities.

On arriving at the restaurant, we switched off the car and found that hiccups had turned into apnæa; the car wouldn't start. We thought that the car fridge was draining the batteries, so checked and found evidence that the third battery (the only one not replaced with a new one in preparing the car), did appear to be failing, so we decided to replace it to be sure. It was 1630h and we could not identify anywhere to sleep in the next 200 Km so we decided to spend the night and leave early the next morning.

A slow and dusty road led us to Singida Lake, a saline lake whose banks serve as pasture for sheep, goats, and cattle, which share the lakeside with white egrets; the breeze provokes reflection, a good moment to observe and enjoy.

On our return to the hotel we secured all of the tanks on the car, enjoyed eating new dishes, a hot shower, and then to bed; tomorrow we would have a long day.

Our two nights delay created an environment of pressure and necessitated a change in our plans, such that we decided to cross Tanzania in two days, eliminating our visit to Dodoma.

We left Karen in the morning after a short attack of battery hiccups, which were resolved easily, and we started out in the surprisingly light Sunday morning traffic, crossing Nairobi in only an hour, and then heading south on the main road to Tanzania. Leaving the city behind, we traversed rural landscapes to the border.

The Maasai population made itself more evident, with red, orange, and blue robes standing out in the dry savannah which was crying out for rain.

When we reached the border we encountered various “fixers” offering their services to navigate the procedures on both sides of the border. We chose to start out on our own, promising to seek their help if this became necessary, however to their disadvantage no difficulties arose, and we succeeded in managing everything in a couple of hours.

Once we had figured out the circuitous routing through the border posts we found the procedures to leave Kenya orderly and fast, although we had a moment’s pause when completing the police register, when one of the columns which we had to complete was headed “prisoner’s name”… clearly there was an excess of prison registers which were hence being used for recording comings and goings at the border.

On the Tanzanian side, even though the routing was more obvious, given that the procedures were to be completed in consecutive offices, the general atmosphere was lighter, less formal, and more slow, especially when it came to completing the exit procedure in the carnet. It was sufficiently difficult for the agent handing this that once his colleagues had taken care of all of the other travellers in the office, it took all of them, assisting our agent, to complete the formalities, and we ended up being invited to visit for three days next time.

The landscape in Tanzania was greener, and Mount Meru served as a backdrop to the route; the scene was full of groups of Maasai women resting, young men and boys dedicated to herding tasks, moving with mastery groups of 100 animals, and carrying the smallest lambs. At sunset the animals congregated and prepared to cross the roads, the men on either side to contain and guide them, waiting for the right moment to start crossing, at the same time the sheep waiting patiently and attentively for the order to move.

The green of the pastures was nourished by the rain which began to fall, contrasting with the dusty trails in the river beds, which now served as routes home: women slowly and constantly walking with loads on their heads, and coloured robes creating an image of absolute beauty, in contrast to the harshness of reality.

Night fell, and our attention focussed on identifying bicycles, carts, and unlit vehicles on the road; avoiding these we arrived at Babati, a small town with basic commercial infrastructure and a distribution point for exploring the Tarangire National Park (which we visited on our return to Tanzania).

The streets were sparsely lit, on both sides people were taking advantage of the cool night. We were unable to find any indication of the hotel we had chosen; the GPS indicated a locale for it however we were unable to find a way to get to it, so when we arrived at a gas station at the far end of the town we asked for directions, we were searching on google, however had found that we no longer had a signal.

We stopped to talk to a group of young men who greeted us in Kiswahili and who turned out to speak a little English. We gave them the name of the hotel, and they suggested that we return 1 Km and ask again, which we did, repeating the same process with another group, this time with their English limited to “hello”. Once we gave them the name they advised us to head north a short distance - “mbali kidogo”, a phrase which stimulates amusement since everyone knows that it refers to being relatively close but not in fact a “short distance", and then to turn east. We did this and ended up in a narrow track, meeting two men who pointed us in the opposite direction. We then met various young men on motorbikes, one of whom claimed to know the place, and with the infallible language of signs, we asked him to guide us there.

His name is Nuru, and he took us confidently via a completely different route, in the opposite direction from all of those indicated previously, so we followed on a 10 minute nocturnal tour on the outskirts of the town, until we arrived at a big gate. We knocked and called however there was no answer. At this point we thought the best plan was to call the hotel, however Nuru’s phone battery was dead, so we put his SIM in our phone. This proved to have no credit so we embarked upon a tour of places where we could buy some credit.

Once we had "airtime", Nuru phoned the hotel, was told that the main hotel was full, and was given directions which allowed him to lead us to a second location where we were accommodated. The sign for the hotel was 100m from the hotel itself, and it was not in Babati, but in the previous village.

Finally in an unusual hotel, we relaxed and dined off a very experienced chicken prepared with an exquisite sauce.

Abrazos, Hugs,

Almost ready for the road south...

2017 March 2nd

Almost ready for the road...
This week has been packed with experiences giving us insight into life in Kenya: no doubt most visitors don't spend much time in supermarkets in Embakazi; medical facilities; training centres for welders, carpenters, mechanics, and tailors; saddlers; among other esoteric locations. We have been working with an amazing group of experts at "Don Bosco" in Karen who, despite being somewhat taken aback by the timing of our project, have taken on the challenge of working with us to prepare our vehicle for the trip.

Moses, carpiteria
We needed to remove the left hand rear seat, modify the existing framework for the fridge and storage drawers to allow installation of a sleeping platform, build and install it, adjust the mattresses kindly and professionally designed & manufactured for us by Americana de Colchones, modify sheets for the L-shaped bed, make up new mounts for the hood (bonnet) liner, and fabricate and install a roof-rack-mounted frame for the additional spare wheel/tyre, extra fuel cans, and water cans. Boniface, Dennis, Kevin, Michael, and Moses, along with many other team members, have done an amazing job of accomplishing this in a single week. Nina, at the AA if Kenya did a great job of arranging carnet transfer, COMESA insurance, Kenya insurance, and Foreign Permit. Gilbert, Daniel, and Patrick managed the logistics of getting us around, and Patrick in particular gave us advice and insight.

Throughout, from months before arrival, on our first day, and every day since then, Luke has been amazing in advising us, shepherding us, and going far beyond any imaginable expectation to make everything possible. This evening we had dinner with Luke and Chloe, shared stories and plans, and agreed to meet in Botswana when we will all be there.

Tomorrow, we plan to finish the Land Cruiser preparation, pack, check everything, and if time permits will leave Nairobi and head south. If the remaining tasks are not complete by mid-afternoon, then we'll relax in Nairobi another night before departing.

Abrazos,
