Babati - casi Mbeya ES / Babati - almost to Mbeya EN

As noted in the title we didn't get to Mbeya as we had planned. After buying a Tanzanian SIM card to be able to use data in Tanzania, and taking out more cash, since Tanzania is a cash economy, we set out for Mbeya as our destination for that day.

Our first milestone being Singida, we took to the road and started to climb, and as we did so the houses changed from mud to brick, and we could see small ovens available for making the bricks. Some houses had walls covered with plaster, while others had exposed brick.

Around us continued shepherds and their flocks, men and women with their hoes working on their holdings or walking along the road, children walking to school, some with tools to work on their plots, and others, smaller, playing around, while women walked on one side or the other with baskets or bags on their heads and small babies on their backs.

The route undulates, it’s easy to travel from one village to the next, and on entering each village the speed limit is marked as 50 Km/h, with three rumble strips and a “sleeping policeman": one at entry and on departure; this practice is consistent along the highway, and it’s not unusual to encounter police intent on ensuring compliance.

Nearer Singida, various rocky outcrops started to appear, increasing the attractiveness of the landscape; these rocky islands, each with a different relationship with its surroundings, made each kilometre a new vista. On arriving at Singida we stopped to eat something and then continue. It was the first town we encountered with an identifiable main street, and whose houses presented a different façcde, suited to commercial activities.

On arriving at the restaurant, we switched off the car and found that hiccups had turned into apnæa; the car wouldn't start. We thought that the car fridge was draining the batteries, so checked and found evidence that the third battery (the only one not replaced with a new one in preparing the car), did appear to be failing, so we decided to replace it to be sure. It was 1630h and we could not identify anywhere to sleep in the next 200 Km so we decided to spend the night and leave early the next morning.

A slow and dusty road led us to Singida Lake, a saline lake whose banks serve as pasture for sheep, goats, and cattle, which share the lakeside with white egrets; the breeze provokes reflection, a good moment to observe and enjoy.

On our return to the hotel we secured all of the tanks on the car, enjoyed eating new dishes, a hot shower, and then to bed; tomorrow we would have a long day.
Lago Singida, Iceberg rock point

Our two nights delay created an environment of pressure and necessitated a change in our plans, such that we decided to cross Tanzania in two days, eliminating our visit to Dodoma.

We left Karen in the morning after a short attack of battery hiccups, which were resolved easily, and we started out in the surprisingly light Sunday morning traffic, crossing Nairobi in only an hour, and then heading south on the main road to Tanzania. Leaving the city behind, we traversed rural landscapes to the border.

The Maasai population made itself more evident, with red, orange, and blue robes standing out in the dry savannah which was crying out for rain.

When we reached the border we encountered various “fixers” offering their services to navigate the procedures on both sides of the border. We chose to start out on our own, promising to seek their help if this became necessary, however to their disadvantage no difficulties arose, and we succeeded in managing everything in a couple of hours.

Once we had figured out the circuitous routing through the border posts we found the procedures to leave Kenya orderly and fast, although we had a moment’s pause when completing the police register, when one of the columns which we had to complete was headed “prisoner’s name”… clearly there was an excess of prison registers which were hence being used for recording comings and goings at the border.

On the Tanzanian side, even though the routing was more obvious, given that the procedures were to be completed in consecutive offices, the general atmosphere was lighter, less formal, and more slow, especially when it came to completing the exit procedure in the carnet. It was sufficiently difficult for the agent handing this that once his colleagues had taken care of all of the other travellers in the office, it took all of them, assisting our agent, to complete the formalities, and we ended up being invited to visit for three days next time.

The landscape in Tanzania was greener, and Mount Meru served as a backdrop to the route; the scene was full of groups of Maasai women resting, young men and boys dedicated to herding tasks, moving with mastery groups of 100 animals, and carrying the smallest lambs. At sunset the animals congregated and prepared to cross the roads, the men on either side to contain and guide them, waiting for the right moment to start crossing, at the same time the sheep waiting patiently and attentively for the order to move.

The green of the pastures was nourished by the rain which began to fall, contrasting with the dusty trails in the river beds, which now served as routes home: women slowly and constantly walking with loads on their heads, and coloured robes creating an image of absolute beauty, in contrast to the harshness of reality.

Night fell, and our attention focussed on identifying bicycles, carts, and unlit vehicles on the road; avoiding these we arrived at Babati, a small town with basic commercial infrastructure and a distribution point for exploring the Tarangire National Park (which we visited on our return to Tanzania).

The streets were sparsely lit, on both sides people were taking advantage of the cool night. We were unable to find any indication of the hotel we had chosen; the GPS indicated a locale for it however we were unable to find a way to get to it, so when we arrived at a gas station at the far end of the town we asked for directions, we were searching on google, however had found that we no longer had a signal.

We stopped to talk to a group of young men who greeted us in Kiswahili and who turned out to speak a little English. We gave them the name of the hotel, and they suggested that we return 1 Km and ask again, which we did, repeating the same process with another group, this time with their English limited to “hello”. Once we gave them the name they advised us to head north a short distance - “mbali kidogo”, a phrase which stimulates amusement since everyone knows that it refers to being relatively close but not in fact a “short distance", and then to turn east. We did this and ended up in a narrow track, meeting two men who pointed us in the opposite direction. We then met various young men on motorbikes, one of whom claimed to know the place, and with the infallible language of signs, we asked him to guide us there.

His name is Nuru, and he took us confidently via a completely different route, in the opposite direction from all of those indicated previously, so we followed on a 10 minute nocturnal tour on the outskirts of the town, until we arrived at a big gate. We knocked and called however there was no answer. At this point we thought the best plan was to call the hotel, however Nuru’s phone battery was dead, so we put his SIM in our phone. This proved to have no credit so we embarked upon a tour of places where we could buy some credit.

Once we had "airtime", Nuru phoned the hotel, was told that the main hotel was full, and was given directions which allowed him to lead us to a second location where we were accommodated. The sign for the hotel was 100m from the hotel itself, and it was not in Babati, but in the previous village.

Finally in an unusual hotel, we relaxed and dined off a very experienced chicken prepared with an exquisite sauce.

Abrazos, Hugs,
Alan y Marce

Almost ready for the road south...

2017 March 2nd

Almost ready for the road...
This week has been packed with experiences giving us insight into life in Kenya: no doubt most visitors don't spend much time in supermarkets in Embakazi; medical facilities; training centres for welders, carpenters, mechanics, and tailors; saddlers; among other esoteric locations. We have been working with an amazing group of experts at "Don Bosco" in Karen who, despite being somewhat taken aback by the timing of our project, have taken on the challenge of working with us to prepare our vehicle for the trip.

Moses, carpiteria
We needed to remove the left hand rear seat, modify the existing framework for the fridge and storage drawers to allow installation of a sleeping platform, build and install it, adjust the mattresses kindly and professionally designed & manufactured for us by Americana de Colchones, modify sheets for the L-shaped bed, make up new mounts for the hood (bonnet) liner, and fabricate and install a roof-rack-mounted frame for the additional spare wheel/tyre, extra fuel cans, and water cans. Boniface, Dennis, Kevin, Michael, and Moses, along with many other team members, have done an amazing job of accomplishing this in a single week. Nina, at the AA if Kenya did a great job of arranging carnet transfer, COMESA insurance, Kenya insurance, and Foreign Permit. Gilbert, Daniel, and Patrick managed the logistics of getting us around, and Patrick in particular gave us advice and insight.

Throughout, from months before arrival, on our first day, and every day since then, Luke has been amazing in advising us, shepherding us, and going far beyond any imaginable expectation to make everything possible. This evening we had dinner with Luke and Chloe, shared stories and plans, and agreed to meet in Botswana when we will all be there.

Tomorrow, we plan to finish the Land Cruiser preparation, pack, check everything, and if time permits will leave Nairobi and head south. If the remaining tasks are not complete by mid-afternoon, then we'll relax in Nairobi another night before departing.

Abrazos,
Alan y Marce

Nairobi, Primeras imágenes ES / first impressions EN

Nairobi, 28 de febrero de 2017

(English version coming soon)

The days are clear, like the smiles of the people wwho greet us in the morning, friendly and curious, provoking great conversations over the sounds of cattle, dogs, and hyenas which accompany the dawn.

A discreet cloud of dust offers a special atmosphere, as if one is watching one of those old films whose colour has faded over time. In 19 degrees C people walk the streets with jackets, coats, and long-sleeved shirts. Women wear skirts, some even wear woollen trousers with diamond patterns. The shawls and colourful dresses are present everywhere; a variety of blues, purples, reds, yellows, and fuchsias are seen everywhere, accompanied by various hairstyles: braids, ribbons, knots, turbans, or very short hair, for those who don't want to invest their time in meeting the challenges of coiffure.

Most men wear dark trousers, their shirts well ironed, their hair very short - almost invisible, and some with the small taqiyah of their Muslim tradition.

We arrive at the main road and traffic appears before our eyes, just as if it were a working day, three lanes of a parking lot which become four when desperate drivers seek to open a way to move forward.

It is not uncommon to find earth pavements (sidewalks), and those which are paved disappear at the next corner. Flowers are present in the landscape and the greenery is combined with street sales of coat racks, hats, fertilisers, earth, the occasional giraffe, metal animals - surprisingly anatomically well made, baskets, pet beds, toilets, tyres, pants, dresses, charcoal, sofas, water, rope, laces, corncobs, sandals, shoe soles, haircuts, and the unmissable shoeshine - Nairobi is the first place in which we find wipes to shine shoes in the supermarket  - and on each post publicity for something, notices of 120 mm x 60 mm, appropriate to the "adopt a post" campaign.

Multiple architectural styles are present, with eclecticism in the use of materials, colours, and shapes. On main streets, women sit on the ground with their pots and pans, offering hot drinks and something to eat at the beginning of the day. To complete the landscape small shops built with basic mateiral, which were once temporary, are full of fruit and fast food to survive.

Streets full of people, each at his or her own pace, men and women with their minds somewhere else, some with that discreet movement of the lips of one who is in his or her own conversation, coming or going in his or her own life.
Changing landscape and speed of movement, now we are on a highway, passing the only national nature park in the world located in a city, Nairobi Natural Park; the ostriches graze without much effort, accustomed to the noise of the city they do not flee at the strident sounds of the cars; at the other side of the road a woman grazes her cattle on an island of vegetation created by the fragmentation of the area with the construction of the main road, later a group of zebras feeds between the trees and a group of Thomson's gazelles do the same; it is funny to spot the first wild animals of this trip en route to the office of the Automobile Association of Kenya.

After two hours on the road, covering only 12 Km, we wait for the expert in the process to take care of our business, only she has the knowledge to do it, her secretary announces us and after a few minutes of interaction it is clearly evident that she is the right person: she understands everything, knows how to handle it, makes the appropriate contacts, executes the respective charges, and everything will be resolved in two days, when we must return to complete the process. Everything has its own pace, everything takes its own sweet speed, reminding us of the delight of calmness.

Datos importantes: 1.

Important information: 1. In the process we discovered that here  the year of denomination of USD banknotes is checked, there have been problems with forgery which lead the banks to reject bills with an issue date prior to 2010, we had to change several bills for other of more recent issue to complete the process. 2. For the execution of one of the procedures it is easier to have an e-visa, since it is possible to use the same account to carry out one of the customs procedures online. 3. Have with you not only the carnet for customs, but also your driving licence, the passport associated with the visa, the foreign car registration, and US dollars, Kenyan Shillings, and a credit card. All are necessary for closing out the previous owner's carnet and legalisation of the car in the country with the new owner's carnet.

The office po the AA of Kenya is in Embakasi, a district of Nairobi and at the same time a neighbourhood. The access street is a market; everything is available from fresh vegetables to second-hand work boots, properly cleaned and ready to go, with dirt roads strewn with garbage and the plastic which we all consume, and five floor buildings covered in clothing drying in the breeze. Nearby, enclosed by fences and walls, we could see a very extensive informal settlement, it is Mukuru Kwa Njenga and is one of the largest poor settlements in the city.

Well these are some first impressions, we hope to share more about the adventure of sorting out our car very soon.

Really in Africa! / De verdad ahora en África! EN/ES

2017 Feb 25th (later in the day)

Nairobi airport (NBO): The first time for Marce, the first time in 42 years for Alan.

The e-visas worked well, the bags showed up, and we were met by Gilbert who drove us to our hotel through the evening traffic, with security cameras flashing frequently on the way, which is new for us and at first was assumed to be speed cameras. After a light snack, turning in for a good night's sleep.

Leaving London for Nairobi

2017 Feb 25th

We've had a couple of busy weeks sorting out some of the last key tasks in the plan:

- Botswana visa: despite having sought to provide everything needed for a 90 day multi-entry visa, the Consulate in Washington (reported to be the only place in the world where we could obtain the visa) gave us a 30 day multi-entry visa. We were able to specify the date of entry and have optimised this for our plans, however have to cancel our planned first entry and will now have to travel directly from Zimbabwe to South Africa, entering Botswana as originally planned as our second entry, from Namibia.

- Alan's new passport: efficiently from the friendly staff at the passport office / eficientemente logrado con el amigable equipo de la oficina de pasaportes.

- carnet: picked up in Norwich on a wet and windy day./ Recogido en Norwich en un día húmedo y lleno de viento.

- warning triangles: it seems that the warning triangles needed for Zimbabwe are more or less unobtainable in Zimbabwe, nor can they be found anywhere in the region. Those obtainable in the UK meet EU legislation and do not meet the rules in Zimbabwe. However, those sold in the USA for trucking do meet the requirements and so we were able to pick up a kit at a truck stop on the way back to New York from Washington.

- a couple of items acquired from Amazon.com and received in New York: new solar charger (since we couldn't find the one we already have), battery charger and spare batteries for the 'ever-ready point and shoot" camera.

So, we're now at the airport for our flight to Nairobi. Many thanks to Beate & Mark for their generous hospitality, company, and support during our days in the UK. Travelling: every journey begins with the first step

2017 Feb 14th

Nota: publicado en Inglés: vamos a editar e incluir versión en español pronto.
So: a few days of last-minute activity, taking care of (most of) the administrative tasks which are required before a lengthy trip, most of which now involve navigating impenetrable telephonic menus, designed to prevent one from talking to human beings, and if it proves possible to achieve this, to ensure that one is as annoyed as possible by the time contact is achieved.

In addition, sorting out the final packing list and packing (not the list, the items on the list).  We were reminded of Jerome K. Jerome's dictum:

"We must not think of the things we could do with, but only of the things that we can't do without".

We had taken this seriously, and it should also be taken into account that Marce is an expert in packing efficiency and that Alan has developed his skills in this area significantly. Even so, we found that we could not reduce below 2 checked roller bags, 2 carry-on rollers, and 2 daypacks, to which was added (courtesy of Americana Colchones, who very kindly chose to support our trip) a specially-designed mattress, built to suit our needs and the available dimensions, in its own kit bag.

Thus being written on boardour first flight in the trip: Avianca Bogotá to New York, so that we can head for the Botswana Consulate in Washington (more re visas in a later post).

Hence we have clothing for a New York winter (when we checked last night it was -4 deg C and had just snowed), which is hardly ideal for Nairobi...

We have learned a lot from our last "big trip" as well as from the other shorter trips made over the last 5 years, and hope that we have been successful in achieving optimal packing efficiency.

PS: safely in New York, with only one bag missing ( allegedly to be delivered on the next flight).
