Travelling: every journey begins with the first step

2017 Feb 14th

Nota: publicado en Inglés: vamos a editar e incluir versión en español pronto.
So: a few days of last-minute activity, taking care of (most of) the administrative tasks which are required before a lengthy trip, most of which now involve navigating impenetrable telephonic menus, designed to prevent one from talking to human beings, and if it proves possible to achieve this, to ensure that one is as annoyed as possible by the time contact is achieved.

In addition, sorting out the final packing list and packing (not the list, the items on the list).  We were reminded of Jerome K. Jerome's dictum:

"We must not think of the things we could do with, but only of the things that we can't do without".

We had taken this seriously, and it should also be taken into account that Marce is an expert in packing efficiency and that Alan has developed his skills in this area significantly. Even so, we found that we could not reduce below 2 checked roller bags, 2 carry-on rollers, and 2 daypacks, to which was added (courtesy of Americana Colchones, who very kindly chose to support our trip) a specially-designed mattress, built to suit our needs and the available dimensions, in its own kit bag.

Thus being written on boardour first flight in the trip: Avianca Bogotá to New York, so that we can head for the Botswana Consulate in Washington (more re visas in a later post).

Hence we have clothing for a New York winter (when we checked last night it was -4 deg C and had just snowed), which is hardly ideal for Nairobi...

We have learned a lot from our last "big trip" as well as from the other shorter trips made over the last 5 years, and hope that we have been successful in achieving optimal packing efficiency.

PS: safely in New York, with only one bag missing ( allegedly to be delivered on the next flight).
