Lake Manyara and Tarangire: distinct riches / riquezas distintas

2017 Aug 15-18

After 6 days between Serengeti and Ngorongoro, we returned to tarmac roads, which felt soft and winding, and which were accompanied by people and small businesses along the road. We chose a lodge on the east side of Lake Manyara, arrived in the evening, as usual, but once there it was possible to enjoy the delight of a plentiful shower, a delicious dinner, and a smooth, continuous, flowing breeze which allowed us to enjoy a bed in a cool environment -  perfect for rest.

Upon awakening, the sound of the birds led us to the verandah to enjoy the first rays of sun and the landscape; in front of us an immense and empty space, the lake reduced by the summer, and closer, beautiful baobabs, with some in fruit. The sound of bells could be heard in the distance, and then a small dark patch appeared; with its movement the sounds became clearer and we could see the cattle marching to drink in the waters of the lake which remained invisible.

Enjoying the time and space we moved north to visit a local market. We arrived at Selela after an hour travelling parallel to the walls of the canyon and between forests of candelabra trees - euphorbia candelabrum;  closer to the small village Maasai men, women, and children appeared at the tops of the hills to glide nimbly down the slopes. Their blue, red, orange, and violet dresses prevailed, women carrying their loads their heads, possibly their products to sell.

Upon reaching the market, we found hundreds of small stalls set up on the ground, selling everything from Maasai swords to small onions. Soon the boys and girls began to approach and touch us, took our hands, and inspected our skin. They wanted to see it all, they touched every pocket, every part of the body, they touched our hair with that delicious curiosity of those who know nothing else. We enjoyed their company and their inspection.

In the market we learned what a good Maasai knife means, what a good spear, and what a good cane. All through signs, demonstrations, and the little Kiswahili we have. After acquiring some traditional fabrics, we left the place bound for Lake Manyara National Park.

This is a small park on the western side of the lake, which covers the mountainside and plains near the lake, full of tall trees which are appropriate for tree-climbing lions; we were not fortunate to see these, howeve on arriving at the lake, we were surprised by the massive presence of pelicans, flamingos, storks, and other waterfowl. We spent much of our time observing the birds, their movements in the water and the incessant landing of one or the other.

We continued south to explore Tarangire National Park; on the way we visited the shop of a small Maasai women's cooperative, a mixture of jewellery and traditional objects, and only a few more contemporary. Three women were helping us, not only to understand their creations, but they also modelled their products for us.

Tarangire is a beautiful park, part of the natural wildlife corridor that conforms with Lake Manyara, ensuring the viability of the animals with the weather changes which occur during the year. The immense plains, with acacias and large baobabs, create a dazzling landscape, elephants and giraffes roam all over the place and their size matches the savannah perfectly. We started the day with elephants, giraffes, and zebras near the camp. We saw a leopard,  and here we did see tree-climbing lions, their relaxed postures conveying deep relaxation and rest.

After two days of warmth and beauty we left the park to enjoy the delights of the mountains.

Ngorongoro: not just a crater / no solo un crater.

2017 Aug 14/15

Ngorongoro Crater is considered one of the top places to see wildlife in Tanzania, and indeed in the world. The National Park is more than just the crater, and we enjoyed many facets of the Park, including the crater, which has positives and negatives, as will be seen.

We entered from Serengeti, and almost immediately left the principal route, which was almost  as badly corrugated as the main Serengeti roads. Rather than follow the crowds we turned off to  the right, taking a road to Lake Ndutu, where we found the environment very dry, although the lake itself had water. It was fascinating to find ourselves in a setting in which elephants shared the lake shores with local Maasai, herding cattle. We saw flamingoes and other water birds as we drive along the shoreline.

The map showed a route south which would give us access to the Crater, and which was marked "bad road, dry season only". We decided to explore this and although it was probably the most dusty we had experienced, it was passable; we met more Maasai looking after their cattle, and finally entered an area of open highland, in which we travelled through small Maasai villages, progressively ascending to the Crater lip by back roads, on which we saw no other visitors. It was good to see these small communities, going about their daily lives.

We finally reached the Crater lip, and made our way to one of the lodges where we enjoyed lunch looking over the Crater, which is undoubtedly an impressive geological spectacle. Our plan was to camp at the only campsite on the Crater lip - Simba A. On setting off to go there Marce noticed an oil leak from the front differential, so we sought advice regarding a workshop where we might fix this and found George, a mechanic at the Ngorongoro garage, who, despite its being closing time, took us to a workshop where the leak could be repaired. He also noted that the chassis (or more accurately, the junction of the front differential housing) was cracked (courtesy of Serengeti's appallingly corrugated roads) and so in short order both were repaired, at least temporarily, allowing us to continue on our way to the campsite. There we met our friends from Serengeti, Tomas and Sabine, and set up camp with them, in the surprisingly cold, wet, and windy night.

The following day we headed into the Crater itself: this involves entry at one point, where one descends a very steep access road into the Crater, a limited time in the Crater (theoretically six hours maximum), leaving the Crater via a paved exit road at another point on the rim. The good news is that there is a great deal of wildlife in the Crater: we saw a pair of male lions soon after arriving on the Crater floor, and also large numbers of zebra and wildebeest, as well as elephant, hippopotamus, buffalo, hyena, and a lot more, including many more lions.

The bad news is that there were many "safarimobiles" in the Crater, in themselves not a concern, since they have as much right to be there as anyone else, however the behaviour of some of these was highly inappropriate: on hearing of a group of lions they would hurtle off to gain a viewpoint, raising clouds of dust and jostling for position, without much concern for other visitors, and certainly with little for the animals involved. At one point we found ourselves at a place where we counted 22 "safarimobiles" competing to view some lions, at which point we headed off in the other direction seeking a more tranquil setting.

It has to be said that the Crater is well worth visiting, for the numbers and diversity of animals and birds which can be seen, however the density of other visitors is equally high, and detracts somewhat from this impressive arena.

Once we had climbed out of the Crater again we headed off around the rim, then descended to make for Lake Manyara, our next destination.

Serengeti: rich in wildlife, shocking roads /Rico en vida silvestre, carreteras atroces

2017 Aug 9-14

220 Km of corrugations, the resulting vibrations pulsed through our bodies for 8 hours incessantly; when we left the car the feeling of vibrations continued for a while;  in this way the Serengeti received us, we are sure that after this experience any energy blockage had been dissolved.

Entering the western corridor the little Thomson’s gazelles welcomed us, alone or in small groups, wagging their black tails continuously; the topi appeared on the yellow plains of dry pasture; the zebras with their precious striped coats broke the monotony of the grey of the sky and the yellow of the earth. In our first detour, a group of lionesses and cubs resting beside the road surprised us and for the first time we could appreciate their spotted pelt.

We continued to the east and under the midday sun a group of giraffes with white booties rested in the soft shade of an acacia, two others, simply dropped to the ground to doze - giraffes sleep sitting with their heads up, and their periods of deep dreams are very short.

Leaving the western corridor with the hope of finding a better road, we headed north-east. At the first bridge two male lions and one female stopped us, their presence slow and imposing, corresponding to the role of kings which has been assigned to them. During the afternoon, groups of zebra, wildebeest, and topi accompanied our way, and a beautiful dik-dik finally made its appearance. At the moment of turning off to Lobo, the landscape became mountainous, rocky, and green; the herds grazed calmly and the sunlight enhanced their beauty with care. Above us giraffes ate near the rocks and as we watched, hyenas came out of their burrow to warm up with the last rays of the sun.

We arrived at the camp and found a herd of tourists, safari cars, camping tents, and several buffalo grazing around, there was no space to accommodate our car on flat terrain, so we located ourselves under some trees a little outside the site; when our neighbours of the night before arrived, they decided to camp with us. The sanitary facilities of this camp are precarious, and their state really disgusting; given the evidence of over-occupation, the park rangers accepted our location and allowed us to light a small fire for our protection.

The night was perfect, we slept under the eyes of hyenas and jackals, and the strong wind kept our bed cool, unfortunately our neighbours suffered for the same reason and their night was disturbed by the interminable noise of their tents.

We took the route north to seek the wildebeest migration, the mountain slopes were full in the first hour of sunshine and again the hyenas prowled. Soon on the main road, just after crossing a bridge, the image dreamed of and wished for came true: a beautiful leopard resting on the branch of a tree, to be able to watch it quietly was a great pleasure.

Eland
Coke's hartebeest

We left the main route, also badly corrugated in this area, to take a delicious sandy, flowing, and undulating route north of the River Bologanja. The route is spacious, with forests along the river, and herds of animals moving around; elands, always cautious groups, surely escaping from the hunter, and the Coke's hartebeest illuminating the horizon with their pale rear ends.

Following the road a group of safari cars moved anxiously on the horizon, so we followed them to find a group of male and female lions with cubs; very soon we reached the end of the Mara River where we could appreciate the migration of the wildebeest.

Hundreds and hundreds of wildebeest awaited in congregations, their bodies lining up in the direction of the crossing. When one decides that it is the time to begin the march the wildebeest which seem to be at rest begin to move in the direction indicated; to the horizon the landscape of yellow hills is filled with well-defined black lines all heading towards the chosen point. Walking is slow, except for the smaller wildebeest which move more quickly to be with their mothers; the calm alters to anxiety at the time of the crossing - the challenges of the height of the banks, the water, the bedrock of the river, and the crocodiles waiting secretly, are reasons enough to heighten concern; once past the crossing the grunting sound of the calls dies away as they continue until on the next hill the new open space and the fresh grass lead to calm. On the human side the march is different, at the top of the hill the cars wait between drinks, stretching legs and eyes, looking for the next movement: when the march starts, all the cars move frenetically to reach a good place near the crossing, and their careless movements have the power to stop the march and put the whole scene on hold again.

To the south the rocky mountain slopes and higher prairies are good places for the herds of zebra and antelope, the beautiful little duikers wander around quietly, while the zebras climb the rocks. At the base the buffaloes take over and in the darkness graze with determination. At night when our fire was extinguished after dinner, a persistent sound in the grass alerted us, when we shone our light behind us, at least 200 buffalo were grazing 10 metres away, we immediately lit the fire and accelerated our rituals before bed to be safe.

The lion hunt did not delay: in the open higher grassland, small round ears appeared intermittently, we counted six pairs, they went up and down like one who is awake but really wants to sleep, in the distance a lion watched and dozed under a small shrub; a sharp sound was the signal and with it eleven cubs ran to grab the prey, the lion with a more leisurely pace moved towards the same place, for a moment a dance of dust and tails was the only thing visible. The roar of the lion ejected a few skinny cubs from the prey who took morsels away to eat, lost in the grass.

A little further on, a healthy, lactating lioness seated hidden in the grass spots a small antelope, follows it slowly, then lies down; an alarm call is made by another member of the herd, the antelope leaves the rushes and stops, paralysed like someone who does not want to be seen, taking short sequences of steps to get away; further away the herd is waiting, a male antelope meets the intended victim, and after what we could call greetings, shepherds is into safety, and the lioness returns to the waiting position to start again.

Further upstream, a cheetah looks out from the bushes, close to two hyenas fighting over the body of a Thomson’s gazelle, one taking the prey and running away with it hanging from its mouth, the other chasing it, a jackal grabbing a part of the carcass and fleeing in the opposite direction into hiding; seconds later, more hyenas join the event, running in from the east, and with their arrival the safari cars start a frantic movement around the area creating a curtain of dust which curtails vision, meanwhile three giraffes continue to eat the green leaves of an acacia just next to the action, moving slowly and delicately; as in our life all realities occur at the same time.

From Lake Tanganyika to Lake Victoria and eastwards / De Lago Tanganyika a Lago Victoria y al este.

2017 Aug 4-9

We left Lakeshore Lodge and headed up the escarpment on northwards to Katavi, on a mix of dusty unsurfaced roads and brand new Chinese tarred roads.  Katavi National Park offers a relatively unvisited Park, with large numbers of hippopotamus, elephant, and a variety of antelope, as well as the biggest crocodiles we have seen. We camped on the riverbank, taking advantage of the "special camping" option, which allows camping anywhere in the park. This is a good option if you plan to stay in a group for a few days, however we didn't find it particularly beneficial, although being able to choose your own view is attractive.

We enjoyed our time in the Park, and then moved on northwards to Kigoma, initially on a new tarred road, then on a dirt road climbing steadily to the rocky outcrops marking the top of the plateau in this area. After helping out a fellow-motorist short of diesel at the summit (local military police patrol) we dropped down to Uvinza, after which it was tarmac all the way to Kigoma, much of which is a newly surfaced road cutting a significant distance off the distance via the old main road via Kasulu.

Kigoma is the most important city in western Tanzania, and the biggest lake port, as well as being the terminus of the railway line west. We stayed at the Hilltop Hotel, chosen for the view and for the possibility to receive a couriered package: the friendly and helpful staff had been flexible in our booking and we were pleased to receive the DHL package containing a replacement for the small handbrake cable which had broken in Botswana, and which we had unsuccessfully been able to find, so that we had finally ordered it online, to be delivered in Kigoma. Toyota in Kigoma were efficient and repaired the handbrake the following morning. While they did this we visited the local market - Mwanga and then wandered through the town to the railway station, in the town centre. The Mwanga market was lively, extensive, and full of colour. Kigoma was an interesting place: a busy road, rail, and boat junction, with a friendly feel. We made it to Ujiji, essentially while trying to find our way to the Hilltop Hotel, and famous as the place where Stanley found Livingstone, who was unaware that he was thought to be lost.

Our next destination was Mwanza, on Lake Victoria. In our planning we had thought that we could get there in a long day's drive from Kigoma. This proved to be optimistic, largely as a result of slow unsurfaced roads, and we stayed the night at the small town of Nyakanazi, essentially a truck stop at the junction of the main road northwest with the road to Kigoma.  We enjoyed a simple dinner at the most popular place in town, then slept well before starting again early the next morning for Mwanza, this time on a good road, taking the northerly route which crosses the Mwanza Gulf on a good ferry to arrive in Mwanza in the early afternoon. Ferries are always an enjoyable experience; this time were the only "wazungu", a Kiswahili terms to refer to Caucasians, Marce less Caucasian however compared to everyone else on board milky white; hence constant staring at us. Alan drove the car onboard and Marce boarded with the other passengers, who were smiling timidly to make contact, the younger ones starting conversations to learn more, then switchng to Kiswahili to share their findings with the others. Everyone friendly and attentive, almost protectors, to make sure that we arrived safely.

We had contemplated staying in Mwanza one night, however arrived early enough to visit the town's principal attractions - the fish market and the Bismarck Rocks - and enjoyed good Chinese food for lunch overlooking the lake, We enjoyed the fish market, which is really more than just fish, and where the fisherman are bringing fish onshore busily, where it is sold in various forms, and where truckers are loading for distribution locally or further afield - a very busy scene.

Having explored these attractions we felt that we would take advantage of the rest of the day to head to Serengeti Stopover campsite, whence we would enter Serengeti National Park the following day.  There we met a German couple with the practice of carefully planning their following day, contrary to our habitual practice, such that our response to their question "and where do you plan to sleep?", was always "no idea". So we shared our dinner as a team dedicated to international cooperation in the area, which allowed us to increase our understanding of the reality of the country and its day to day challenges.

2017 Jul 30-Aug 5

We started on our route to Lake Tanganyika with absolute uncertainty with respect to our arrival; the maps we had showed secondary roads, unpaved, and in some cases only tracks. To our surprise we found ourselves rolling along new and perfectly constructed and signposted roads which connect the populations of western Tanzania. Travel was slow but this time because of the urban speed limits imposed in villages, there being villages every two kilometres.

Once in Sumbawanga we were only three and a half hours from our destination on the lake shore, so we continued on our way, crossing the rocky mountains which border the lake to the east. We arrived just when daylight ran out, a sweet voice was heard: “Welcome to Lakeshore, I am Louise, are you Alan?”. Friendly greetings, a good glass of wine, a beautiful “banda” and a meal prepared with care were the perfect mix to recover our energy after 11 hours on the road.

In the morning the clear air of the lake and the warm sunlight let us appreciate the beauty of this place in both the natural and the human dimensions; any sense of hurry disappeared and a relaxed conversation with Louise, Chris, and the members of their team took place. Mahale National Park came up, and it took only a few minutes for us to make the decision to go there with Chris.

Next day we left the Lodge before 0600h, the lake was flat and the estimate of time to get there was between 4:30 and 5:30 hours. Thirty minutes later, we were completely soaked, the wind was blowing in our direction; waves on the lake were inevitable. After five and a half hours, wet and cold, and making our bumpy way, we arrived at the park camp. Time to relax, take care of the formalities, to prepare to go walking the next day, and to enjoy the open bar and delicious food on the beach.

We started to walk to the mountainside early in the morning; when we arrived at the first station we found other groups of people waiting to be called. The trackers use the normal calls of the Chimpanzees to orient their search; this morning the mountain was silent.

Mahale National park is the most remote natural park in Tanzania and the home of three groups of Chimpanzees. It's a mountain park and provides enough ecosystem for the Chimps to live. This park, with Gombe Stream further to the North, are the places in which the Chimps are protected in wildlife parks in Tanzania.

After an hour and half of waiting, calls were detected by the trackers; a family was in the valley, close to the initial path. The three groups moved quickly to approach them. The order of arrival at the first station was the order in which we would be allowed access to the Chimps, and each group would be permitted to see the chimps for 20 minutes three times. When we did see the Chimps for the first time, the group was moving and went into the wetlands, an area impossible for us to enter. Again the three groups were waiting, so we took time to explore the local vegetation, recognise the local insects, try the fruit available, and have a nap in the middle of this rain forest in 32 degrees C.

Finally the Chimps left the wetlands and we could start the cycle of observation. It was amazing to be close to these three females: mother, older daughter, and a female baby. They were initially breastfeeding and then grooming each other. The careful relationship and dedication is admirable, and the expressions and movement created a special sense of connection.

We spent almost the whole day on the expedition and arrived at the camp thirsty, dirty, and tired, ready to enjoy another special dinner on the beach.

Next day, we repeated the expedition; this time the chimps were far away - even though we tried to get close, by the time we reached the second station, it was necessary to return, so we decided to enjoy the other elements of this forest: we saw Blue Duiker, a very small and shy antelope, which we had never imagined seeing, Colobus monkey, one of the favourite dishes for chimps, and red tailed monkey.

Red colobus monkey

The plan was to leave at 1600h, but at 1500h the wind started again, finally at 1730h we decided to start the journey back, and two hours later it was simply impossible to continue: the wind was against us, the waves were very high, and the effort of moving was huge. Chris decided to heave to in a protected area and prepared a delicious pasta with pesto which we all ate together, enjoying the experience under the moon light, with the gentle movement of the boat.

After 2100h Chris started south again; this time it was possible to continue. We, along with two other passengers sharing the boat with us spent our time sleeping and relaxing during the bumpy trip, while Chris and Hasani did an amazing job working together. We arrived at 0400h: a cup of tea in bed with a glass of port helped us relax and we had the perfect excuse to spend one more day in this paradisiacal place: full of taste, love, business discipline, generosity, and charm.
