Tuli Block, simply wonderful / Tuli Block, simplemente maravilloso

We had decided to go to Tuli block very early in our planned base case; curiously it was postponed until the end of our time in Botswana, after trying unsuccessfully (again) to extend our permission to stay in Botswana, we decided to make the trip to Tuli a little faster than we like and added 1600 km to our route.

Decidimos ir a Tuli block muy temprano en nuestra planeación, curiosamente esta visita fue pospuesta hasta el final de nuestro viaje, después de tratar de obtener una extensión de nuestro permiso de permanencia en Botswana, sin éxito, decidimos hacer este viaje un poco más rápido de lo deseado y añadir con el 1600 km más a nuestra ruta.

Our satisfaction in visiting this area is immense. The first step was to visit Selebi-Pikwe, the place in which Alan lived 44 years ago. It was a pleasure to wander around this big place and provided the opportunity to listen to Alan's stories of his life there. We were able to visit the mine, in process of liquidation, and not only recognised the difference from the one that Alan had left, but also learned a lot about nickel & copper production; we had a very worthwhile conversation with one of the senior members of the organization, who led us to understand more about the challenges they have in closing down the main nickel and copper mine in the country.

Nuestras satisfacción visitando esta área fue inmensa. El primer paso fue visitar Selebi-phikwe, el lugar en el que Alan vivió hace 44 años. Fue un placer movernos alrededor de este lugar ahora grande y tener la oportunidad de escuchar las historia de Alan sobre su vida allí. Pudimos visitar la mina, ahora en proceso de liquidación, y no sólo reconocer la diferencias con la que Alan dejó, sino también aprender mucho sobre la producción de cobre. Tuvimos una valiosa conversación con un miembro del equipo sénior de la organización, quien nos permitió entender mejor los retos que tienen cerrando la principal mina de cobre y niquel en el país.

In Tuli block our base was Molema Bush Camp, a beautiful place on the Limpopo river bank, this camp is associated with a community project, and has very good accommodation in cabins and campsites, and a great team of authentic people who really helped us get to know not only the area, but also the people and their traditions.

Nuestra base en Tuli block fue Molema Bush Camp, un lugar bello en la banca de Rio Limpopo, este canpamento está asociado a un projects comunitario, cuenta con muy buenas instalaciones para descansar, tanto en cabinas y cómo en los sitios para acampar, y con un gran equipo, de gente auténtica que nos dejó conocer  o solo el área sino también sus tradiciones.

The topography in this area is characterised by gentle mountains and high plains crossed by rivers which at this time of the year are sandy beds with some lakes of water. The Mopane tree is everywhere sharing the space with the traditional acacias and the Baobabs. The area is tranquil, there are not jams of safari cars everywhere, so it is possible to move around and simply enjoy the landscape. The area is recognised for having crazy elephants - a little more aggressive - so we received a lot of warnings about them, however this time they were tranquil.

La topografía se caracteriza por montañas suaves y planicies altas, interrumpidas por los ríos que en el esta época del año son camas de arena con algunas lagunas. El árbol de mopane está en todo el lugar compartiendo el espacio con las tradicionales acacias y los Baobabs . El área es tranquila, no hay conglomerados de carros del safari en todas partes, así que es posible moverse alrededor y simplemente disfrutar el paisaje. Este sitio es reconocido por tener "elefantes locos" -un poco más agresivos- por eso recibimos muchas advertencias sobre ellos, pero esta vez ellos estaba tranquilos.


The animal world gave us beautiful images. We saw a Cheetah with her babies, after catching an impala. All of the area was really quiet,  the animals were hiding, and KB said "this is a place with a lot of animals, if they are hidden it's because a lion or cheetah is hunting", five minutes later we saw the female cheetah, she was resting under the shadow of a bush, sand when she had recovered she walked to the other side of some trees to call her babies, and after a few seconds two small furry cheetahs arrived, the three walked together to the carcass, the adult cheetah positioned the prey and started to open it, at the same time the babies bit at the skin unsuccessfully.  Once the mother had opened the body, she moved to the side to let her babies eat. In addition we had the opportunity to see hyena, Verreaux eagles, bush pigs, honey badger, and white-tailed mongoose.

El mundo animal nos dejó bellas imágenes. Pudimos ver una chita con sus bebés, después de que casara un impala. Toda el área estaba muy silenciosa, los animales estaban escondidos y KB dijo "está es un área con muchos animales, si ellos están escondidos es porque un león o una Chita están cazando", cinco minutos después estábamos viendo la chilla, estaba descansando bajo la sombra de un matorral, cuando ella se recuperó, comenzó a caminata detrás de los árboles y a llamar a sus bebés, después de unos segundos dos pequeños y peludos cachorros
llegaron al lugar, juntos caminaron hacia el cuerpo sin vida. La chita adulto posicionó la presa y comenzó a abrirla, al mismo tiempo los cachorros mordían la piel, sin éxito. Cuando la madre abrió la presa se movió a un lado para dejar comer a sus crías. Adicionalmente, pudimos ver hienas, águilas, marrano de monte, honey badger y Mongoose de cola blanca.

This time it was possible to walk in the park, we walked to the summit of the principal mountain to see the landscape from the top, we learned how to react in case of encountering a Cheetah, Lion, a Leopard, or Elephant, lessons which didn't require any practical exercise, even though we saw foot prints of leopard and hyena during the walk. From the top we had the luck to see a group of elephants crossing the river bed looking for water, which was beautiful and also cut short our visit to the mountain - we had to leave the area before they smelled us, or be there until the elephants had gone.

Esta vez pudimos caminar en el parque, fue posible ir a una de las montañas principales para ver el paisaje desde lo alto, aprendimos cómo reaccionar si encontrábamos una chota, un león o un leopardo, lección que no requirió actividades prácticas, a pesar de haber visto huellas frescas de hiena y leopardo en nuestro camino. Desde la cima pudimos ver a los elefantes cruzar el lecho del río buscando el agua, fue hermosos y aceleró nuestra visita a la montaña, teníamos que dejar el area antes de que ellos nos olfatearán o quedarnos en la cima hasta que ellos se fueran.

At night we enjoyed our dinner with the team members, Lilian prepared mopane worm stew with pap (a corn dough); the stew was absolutely delicious, the worms were soft and consistent and the flavour was great. We ate by the fire and shared all the food and drinks available while we were talking about the traditions and daily life there and in Colombia. We received an invitation from them to live in their village for 3 months to learn Setswana and the practices of the rural life.

En la noche disfrutamos nuestra cena con el equipo, Lilian preparó estofado de gusano de mopane y Pap (la masa de maíz); el estofado fue absolutamente delicioso, los gusanos son suaves y consistentes y el sabor de la salsa grandioso. Comimos cerca del fuego, compartimos toda la comida y bebido disponible mientras hablábamos sobre sus tradicionales y la vida cotidiana allá y en Colombia. Ellos nos invitaron a vivir con ellos en su villa por tres meses para aprender Tsetswana y las prácticas de la vida rural.

Our departure was a slow and pleasant process, during the morning we met each of the team members and had the opportunity to talk more about their personal interests and projects; warm and sincere hugs with every one, filling our heart with new love and a lot of admiration for them.

Nuestra partida fue un proceso lento y placentero, en la mañana recibimos la visita de cada uno de ellos y pudimos hablar con más profundidad sobre los intereses y proyectos personales, abrazos cálidos y sinceros con cada uno llenaron nuestro corazón con amor nuevo y mucha admiración por ellos.
