We decided to write this post to describe some common images around the country which people would recognise in a visit to Botswana and which were in some sense amazing for us.

País que las personas pueden reconocer en su visita a Botswana y que fueron sorprendentes para nosotros.

Donkeys: even though we have seen donkeys almost everywhere we have visited the number of donkeys on the roads around this country is immense; they are the most important transport in the rural environment and are very well appreciated by the people. The roads are also used by goats and cows.

Burros: aunque hemos visto burros casi en todas las partes que hemos visitado, el número de burros en las carreteras alrededor del país es inmenso; son el transporte más importante en el medio rural y son muy apreciados por la gente. Los caminos también son utilizados por cabras y vacas.

Wildlife in the road: when at the roadside you see a sign with an elephant shape you understand that you are in a wildlife area, but when two giraffes are standing in the middle of the highway you realise that is not a myth; on all of the main roads in the north of Botswana we found wild animals crossing the highway, especially elephants, and this reinforced our practice to avoid driving at night.

La vida silvestre en el camino: cuando en el borde de la carretera se ve una señal con una forma de elefante se entiende que usted está en un área de vida silvestre, pero cuando dos jirafas están de pie en el centro de la carretera se da cuenta de que no es un mito; En todas las carreteras principales en el norte de Botswana encontramos animales salvajes cruzando la carretera, especialmente elefantes, esto reforzó nuestra práctica de evitar conducir por la noche.

Speed traps: the main task for the police in Botswana is to check motorists' speed in the 80 Km per hour zones, and fine people who exceed this limit. In general the limits are 60 in towns, 80 entering and leaving towns and at major intersections, and 120 on the open highways. It's very common to see a car stopped at the side of the road while the driver is fined. They also fine people at police checkpoints, if the driver doesn't stop precisely at the stop sign placed a few metres ahead of the waiting police officer.

Trampas de velocidad: la principal tarea de la policía de Botswana es verificar la velocidad en la sección de 80 km/h y multar a las personas por exceder el límite. En general los límites son  60 km/h en los pueblos,  entrando o dejando los centros poblados 80 km/h y  120 km/h en las vías abierta. Es muy común ver un carro estacionado al lado de la vía atendiendo la multa. Ellos también multan en las barreras de control si el carro no para en la señal de Pare ubicada a pocos metros del lugar en que el policía está ubicado.

Potholes: with the exception of the route between Gaborone and Francistown, all the roads in Botswana have the capacity to surprise with potholes and eroded edges, sometimes it's only one in the middle of the highway, sometimes there are more potholes than road, and it is funny to see all of the drivers trying to avoid one and falling into another.

Huecos: con excepción de la ruta entre Gaborone y Francistown, todas las rutas en Botswana tienen la capacidad de sorprender con huecos y pérdidas de los bordes, algunas veces es solo uno en la mitad de la ruta y en otros casos hay más huecos que ruta y es gracioso ver a todos los conductores tratar de evitar un hueco para caer en otro.

The rural houses in Botswana have a mix of materials and techniques; almost everyone has a traditional building which coexists with others made of more durable materials, most of the time in a rectangular shape. It's frequent to find the toilet outside of the main structure and to have a number of different buildings in a family dwelling, as a result of the need to have individual houses for the children when they grow up.

Las casas rurales en Botswana tienen una mezcla de materiales y técnicas; Casi todo el mundo tiene un edificio tradicional que coexiste con otros de materiales más duraderos, la mayoría del tiempo en forma rectangular. Es frecuente encontrar el inodoro fuera de la estructura principal y tener un número de edificios diferentes en una vivienda familiar, como resultado de la necesidad de tener casas individuales para los hijos e hijas cuando crecen.

Clothes: it was very evident at the start of our trip to see formality in the dress of the people of Botswana; it's very common to see men in a rural area wearing suits, with women dressed in black. The use of heavy jackets and sweaters was very common even when the temperature was 28 deg C in the middle of the day.

Ropa: fue muy evidente desde el principio de nuestro viaje ver la formalidad en el vestido de la gente de Botswana; es muy común ver a hombres en una zona rural vestidos con trajes, así mujeres vestidas de negro. El uso de chaquetas pesadas y suéteres fue muy común incluso cuando la temperatura era 28 grados C al medio día.







Wifi: the mobile phone network in Botswana is slow and expensive, usually you have only emergency data and limited connectivity even in the biggest towns; we bought 1/5 of the data we used in Namibia, and at the end of the trip we still had a positive balance.

Wifi: la red de telefonía movil en Botswana es lenta y costosa, por lo general sólo tiene datos de emergencia y conectividad limitada incluso en las ciudades más grandes; Compramos 1/5 de los datos que utilizamos en Namibia, y al final del viaje todavía teníamos un saldo a favor.

Basket ware: the main craft expression in Botswana is baskets, they use palm leaves to create a truncated design with geometric patterns, and use natural products to create the different colours. The baskets are really beautiful and are almost the only craft expression available around the country. San people create beautiful crafts with ostrich eggs and leather; their products are available in Ghanzi, but during our visit there the place was closed and despite multiple contacts we were unsuccessful in buying anything which could be delivered during the time we were in the country; problems with their web site and difficulties of (in) flexibility with carriers made it impossible.

Cestería: la principal expresión artesanal en Botswana es la cestería, que utilizan hojas de palma para crear un diseño truncado con patrones geométricos, y productos naturales para crear los diferentes colores. Las cestas son realmente hermosas y son casi la única expresión de artesanía disponible en todo el país. La gente de San crea bella artesanía con huevos de avestruz y cuero; Sus productos están disponibles en Ghanzi, pero durante nuestra visita allí el lugar estaba cerrado, y a pesar de múltiples contactos no tuvimos éxito en comprar un producto que pudiera ser entregado durante el tiempo que estuvimos en el país; Los problemas con su sitio web y las dificultades de flexibilidad con los transportistas lo hizo imposible.

Art on the highway: on all of the roads in Botswana you can see collections of objects or parts of them, collected from the road, and organized in singular compositions; these collages of materials and forms are use to indicate an entrance from the road, sometimes they indicate a smaller road and sometimes the entrance to a specific place, they are everywhere and it's a little difficult to understand how someone could explain to another how to find the entrance, it could be something like: "10 Km from Palapye you are going to see a pole with a yellow plastic bucket, a broken plate, and a red piece of wood, with a wheel and some coloured fabric - that is the entrance" 😳. However we have to accept that they could be very useful because with the height of the grass on the roadside it's impossible to see most entrances.

Arte en la autopista: en todos los caminos de Botswana se pueden ver colecciones de objetos o partes de ellos, recolectados de la carretera, y organizados en composiciones singulares; Estos collages de materiales y formas se usan para indicar una entrada desde la carretera, a veces indican un camino más pequeño ya veces la entrada a un lugar específico, están por todas partes y es un poco difícil entender cómo alguien podría explicar a otro cómo encontrar La entrada, podría ser algo así como: "A 10 Km de Palapye vas a ver un poste con un cubo de plástico amarillo, un plato roto, y una pieza de madera roja, con una rueda y una tela de color - es la entrada. 😳 Sin embargo, tenemos que aceptar que pueden ser muy útiles porque con la altura de la hierba en la carretera es imposible ver la mayoría de las entradas.
